    ARCHIVED Naturopath/homeopath

Adrian, please keep in mind that many of the mainstream medical treatments don't have any better than a placebo effect, too. In fact, many of them CAUSE more problems than they fix, because they usually mask symptoms rather than address causes, and in addition they have side effects. Look at how many shelves of cold medicines there are at your local...
  2. This is similar to a recipe I like, but always made it in the oven.. I LOVE the crockpot idea--does it come out crunchy at all??? The only differences in the recipe are that mine didn't call for eggs, and that I add 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon.
  3. Welcome aboard! Sounds to me like you have your answer already. Dietary response is a valid diagnostic tool. Doesn't matter if you want to call your condition "gluten intolerance" or "celiac" or "bellybuttonitis," what's important is that gluten makes you sick. That much is obvious. So is the answer. Stop eating gluten. Sounds like your sister...
  4. Hi, Anna, welcome aboard! You posted elsewhere that you have already been told to go gluten-free due to gastro problems. That's your answer right there. I understand that you don't seem to feel any symptoms if you eat white bread occasionally, but based on what you've written, it sounds quite likely that you have problems with gluten. This means that...
  5. I do notice that my contact lenses are much more comfortable than they were before going off gluten. I had a lot of trouble finding soft contact lenses that worked. The first opthalmologist I saw tried ONE pair on me, and told me that I simply couldn't wear soft lenses. A couple of years later, a colleague raved about an optometrist, not an opthalmologist...
  6. Always has a "stay-dry" liner on top of their pads that feels like a rubbery kind of plastic. I found that that liner is especially irritating. I always thought of it as the same feeling as wearing an old-fashioned slicker (raincoat) next to your skin--ugh.
  7. Much better! Thanks for listening to us, Scott.
  8. Thanks for posting--they look yummy!!! But I thought Almond Joys were gluten-free??????
  9. Oh, that sounds SO much more comfy!! I've just been changing underwear once or twice a day (kind of a nuisance).
  10. Another nasty thing about those pantyliners is, I swear they actually MAKE you have more discharge. I don't understand how that could even be possible, but I swear that's the case. I even factor in ovulation, etc., and I still end up with WAY more discharge when I wear those things
  11. I agree with Raven and Lonewolf: I believe gluten intolerance is just early-stage celiac disease. There are people with biopsy-confirmed celiac disease who do NOT have the supposedly necessary genes. It's totally a moot point. The good part about self-diagnosis is that insurance can't turn you down (some people here have been officially turned down...
  12. You've probably already had your Mom's Night Out, but I just wanted to point out that if you're going to "pump and dump," you should pump before you leave, too, so that the baby gets your milk and not formula. Your baby might be able to tolerate formula just fine. But I was told by a neonatal nurse that nearly every nursing baby she ever had to give...
  13. Your body is telling you something here. Actually, your body is screaming at you--listen to it!!!!! Your instincts are probably correct--I bet you have a problem with gluten. I think your doctor is also not to be trusted. There ARE some good ones out there, though--I think there might be a list on this site or on some of the other celiac sites, of...
  14. Here is the recipe I use. I have to fight my gluten-eating family for this, so it must be pretty good! You will need cornstarch, potato starch, and xanthan gum for this recipe. The cornstarch and xanthan gum will be at Whole Foods. So will potato starch, but if you have an Asian grocery store, they will have potato starch at about 1/8 the price. ...
  15. Those of us with DH disagree with you! I always wondered why I got so irritated from those pads! Hmmmm....
  16. No, it doesn't!! Redbridge beer is gluten-free--it's brewed from sorghum, and people tell me it's really good. (Don't ask me, though,--I've always hated beer )
  17. Congratulations on your pregnancy! Here is an abstract on the link between Down Syndrome and celiac: Open Original Shared Link Children with Down Syndrome are doing WAY, WAY better today than they did 30 years ago, both physically and mentally. And that 's even without a gluten-free diet. With a gluten-free diet, I am sure they do even better! Breastfeeding...
  18. The olive green is much better! Thanks, Scott! My only other suggestion would be to make the print larger and darker for the many here who have vision problems. Even those of us without vision problems would appreciate it! Thanks again.
  19. I agree with the above posters, and want to add that it's also very likely that you may not be nursing often enough, as most doctors and nurses give TOTALLY the wrong advice. Especially considering that you have been doing some formula (NOT something to feel guilty about, BTW), your feeding schedule is likely based on a formula schedule, not on a real-life...
  20. I have the impression that the blood tests are far more accurate than the biopsy! (Doesn't mean that they are accurate enough, though.) And of course, if you have an idiot doctor who doesn't know that you should be eating lots of gluten for months before the blood is taken, then it's worthless anyway. The biopsy is only accurate if they happen to pick...
  21. "Atkins-friendly" does not mean gluten-free. If gluten is causing his reactions (sure sounds like it from your post), then Atkins-friendly is not going to be a help. It might be low-carb, but if it contains gluten (look for ingredients like wheat, flour, wheat starch, wheat bran, barley, malt, malted barley, rye, even oat bran), then it will probably make...
  22. My first impression was how cheerful and attractive the green is. My second impression is that there are so many ads, it's like the visual equivalent of a really LOUD TV commercial--constantly. My third (and most lasting) impression is that after 5 minutes, I have a really bad headache. And I rarely get headaches. Please, Scott, either...
  23. Is there a Sam's Club near you? I find that their prices are SO much better than our local grocery store, I save ton of $ just buying fish, chicken, ground turkey, produce, canned salmon, even kitty litter at Sam's Club rather than the grocery store. I added it up when I first joined: I saved the price of membership (I think it's $45 for the year...
  24. I understand that the current research indicates that gluten is only absorbed through digestion. But I would like to point out that anybody with open, oozing blisters from dermatitis herpetiformis ought to avoid all topical products containing oatmeal, as well as products containing known gluten. My own experience was that oatmeal baths, which I had...
  25. Thank you for posting this. One of my colleagues has this, and she has also recently been diagnosed with diabetes. I was wondering if she should be tested for gluten problems, but I don't think she has any obvious food intolerances. Most of her symptoms seem to be extreme fatigue and headaches. I'll happily pass on to her whatever info you post!
