  1. Hi, and welcome aboard! There are many of us here who have kids either developmentally delayed or on the autism spectrum. Yes, food sensitivities/allergies can do all kinds of damage to the brain. 2 wonderful resources of info are Lisa Lewis's book, Special Diets for Special Kids, and Karyn Seroussi's Unraveling The Mysteries of Autism. I'm not saying...
  2. Everyone is right to tell you not to ignore this, and not to wait--but if you don't have insurance til next month, that really is something to consider, too--if it turns out to be something requiring expensive tests/treatments, you will be responsible for EVERYTHING, even after your insurance kicks in (pre-existing condition). For the next couple of...
  3. I just get really upset when I hear so often cases like this, where the doctor is either lying or mistaken. No, wait, the doctor would have to be lying--he MUST know that a certain percentage (even if it's less than 1 percent) of children have serious to fatal adverse reactions to the anesthesia. 1/2-1 percent of thousands of pediatric endoscopies per year...
  4. I'm sorry, if she says she wants to rule out IBS, I already don't trust her judgment. IBS can't be ruled out, because it is neither a disease nor an accurate diagnosis. EVER. It is a syndrome, a collection of symptoms for which the doctors say they don't know the cause--but it is only the last year or so that SOME doctors are finally realizing that...
  5. They don't give you the form when you meet with the surgeon beforehand (which is something I had to insist on, and had to pay a separate office visit fee for it) They give it to you when you show up at the hospital for surgery at 6 am, with your child in your arms, and you're all stressed out already because they're going to crack open your child's chest...
  6. Forget the "naturally gluten-free french fries--" many restaurants use french fries that come pre-dipped in batter.
  7. My husband likes to bake Pillsbury Pop-N-Fresh biscuits, which always stick to the supposedly-nonstick pan. I'm starting to wonder if I should throw out the scrubber sponge after I clean his gluteny pans--I try to wash them out really well, but ?????
  8. I make a double batch of Annalise Roberts' brown rice flour mix (6 cups FINELY GROUND brown rice flour, 2 cups potato starch, 1 cup tapioca starch), and then just measure out what I need (I usually use half white rice flour as it is much cheaper) to make the following cookies: (NOTE: don't forget the xanthan gum, it's totally necessary! And yes, these...
  9. I couldn't get the link to work, and I couldn't find celiacchick anywhere on this board (I did a member search).
  10. A friend of mine is an anesthesiologist. When our son had open-heart-surgery, we asked about worst-case scenarios, and were told that there was a very small chance of infection. A friend of mine is an anesthesiologist. When I told her about it, she said, no, the worst-case scenario was the child dying on the table, that it was a real risk, and that anesthesia...
  11. It's not just you, I threw out the first (and only) bag of bean flour I ever bought because I was sure it was bad. Funny thing is, after it's baked, a mix with bean flour in it turns out fantastic--the texture is fine, the crumb is moist, and there is no bean flavor or odor anywhere. But raw---eewwwww (we need an emoticon holding its nose here). I...
  12. AFAIK=As Far As I Know I think Vance's Darifree is only available by mail order. I've never tried it, but have heard nothing but good things about it. I've also read that many dairy-allergic people do well on goat's milk. Even those of us who are not new to this are still learning!
  13. Don't know where Shawn lives, but in the US, neither one applies. I think your doctor is trying to pad his bank account. DH is unquestionably celiac. You might try contacting the insurance company (if you are in the US) and ask them if they are aware that your doctor is prescribing unnecessary invasive and expensive tests.
  14. I called and got through! I was told that they had only had them in a few stores as a test. She couldn't tell me what the results were (apparently, that's "proprietary info"), but she made note of my request. She didn't ask for my name, either, so maybe I'll call again from my cell phone! Vote often!!!
  15. I'm guessing that you are quoting the doctor here? Please ask him to name ONE nutritional benefit to gluten that cannot be easily replaced with another food. In fact, please ask him to name ONE nutritional benefit to gluten, period. Momandgirls, I hope we're not making you feel attacked here. It's just that we've all already been through this...
  16. Forgot to mention in the last post: since you are new, you missed last month's discussion of Rice Dream Rice Milk--it is NOT gluten-free (processed with barley enzymes), but they are squeaking through a loophole that allows them to label it as such because the amount of barley is under 200ppm. Some people here have reacted to it.
  17. I like steamed almond milk and steamed hazelnut milk--they actually contain no dairy, they are made from the almonds and hazelnuts, and they are SO yummy! I don't have a problem with dairy, and can drink regular milk, but I like these better! Almond milk is available at most grocery stores in the health food section, with the shelf-stable soy and rice...
  18. Kinnikinnick and Trader Joe's both make gluten-free bagels! Sliced, toasted, schmeared with cream cheese and topped with lox--I really can't tell the difference, and I used to live in New York! (But I always thought bagels were only edible holders for cream cheese and lox, what do I know?) However, you might want to avoid the gluten-free substitutes...
  19. Southeast Asians and Chinese have only recentlyintroduced wheat into their diet --their diet has been rice-based for centuries. In fact, the Chinese greeting, "Ni Hao Ma," while loosely translating as "How are you?" more accurately translates as a shortened version of "Have you had rice today?" Gluten intolerance/celiac disease is practically unheard...
  20. Is there any possibility that the flavors that bother you happen to have more acidity than the others? The best I can suggest is that you keep track of which products make you react (if you do react). While the labeling laws are very clear, it seems as though some ingredients at the bottom of the chain might come from suppliers outside the US, and there...
  21. I would use coconut milk (found in the Asian aisle), maybe with an extra 1/2 cup of sugar. You can also google "dairy-free substitute for sweetened condensed milk."
  22. Yum--OH!
  23. I thought all apple cider was gluten-free...
  24. That looks so good, I printed out the recipe and am making it right now!!! Thanks so much for posting it!
  25. There are no nutritional benefits to gluten. Look, I thought it was going to be absolutely horribly difficult to remove gluten from my diet. I literally cried for 2 two days, and thought I couldn't deal with it. It has been so easy, it's ridiculous. it's EASIER than going low-carb, because you can have carbs. You can have rice, potatoes, vegies...
