  1. Tell your significant other that your thyroid problems are most likely due to the gluten! The way it works is, the gluten triggers your immune system to attack the thyroid. You will very likely notice that you can decrease your dose of Armour within a couple of months (but don't worry if that doesn't change --as long as you are feeling well, that is the...
  2. Hi, Lori! You're in the right place!!! My first two weeks gluten free were difficult only in that I REALLY wanted a piece of bread. But I got through it with the help of Fritos and Guittard chocolate chips (bought in bulk at Costco ), and once I got throught the first two weeks, it was clear sailing after. And I felt better within 48 hours...
  3. It was originally in a thread from back in 2005. Here is the link to that thread: Open Original Shared Link THere is a link listed for www.encyclopedia.family. somethingorother, but I couldn't make that link work.
  4. ANYTHING you can think of to make on Thanksgiving can be easily made gluten-free--and nobody will be able to tell the difference. Tell us what you are planning on making, and we'll tell you how to make it gluten-free! Then you not only get to taste it, you get to EAT it! Even the traditional green-bean casserole (a Thanksgiving MUST at our house...
  5. More than you probably wanted to know: Sepsis From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Sepsis is a serious medical condition characterized by a whole-body inflammatory state caused by infection. Traditionally the term sepsis has been used interchangeably with septicaemia and septicemia ("blood poisoning").[1] However, these terms are no longer...
  6. Well, the current wisdom is that rye, and barley contain gluten and are off-limits, as you say. You do raise a good question. Corn has gluten, too, I believe--at least, I see "corn gluten" on ingredient lists occasionally, yet it does not seem to be a problem for most celiacs, though many have reported developing an intolerance to corn as well as to gluten...
  7. Noah had a very bad night--he became septic. I'm told that that is under control now, but apparently they almost lost him. Please, if you have a moment for another prayer on his behalf, he really needs it. Thanks, everyone.
  8. Just keep in mind that any pharmaceutical product is a substitute for what we OUGHT to be getting in the foods we eat. If you need fiber, eat it! Which makes me think that it might be a good idea if you post a day or two's worth of what you typically do eat, as that might very possibly be the whole problem. Also, what meds are you taking?
  9. Why are they waiting a MONTH to do bloodwork? ??? Why didn't they do bloodwork two months ago?????
  10. They tried to take him out of the coma, but he had 24 hours of seizures, so I guess they're going to wait some more. They are still trying to find the right combination of anti-seizure meds. I found some links on the Internet about casein and seizures, and I know that the stuff they tube-feed is whey-based. I wonder if they could tube-feed him donated...
  11. Still wondering....
  12. Please tell your DH to come on this thread so we can all YELL AT HIM FOR BEING SO INCONSIDERATE, MEAN, AND NASTY AS TO BRING A PIZZA INTO YOUR HOUSE. THat's so unbelievably cruel--like eating in front of a starving person, or drinking in front of an alcoholic and saying, "Mmmm, doesn't this look good? Don't you wish you could have some?" He can...
  13. Is EE an auotimmune disorder? If so, and you have a family HX of celiac, I would think that going back on gluten is the worst thing you could do. The medical community is only now starting to figure out that gluten can be a trigger for the immune system to attack all sorts of things--skin (DH), thyroid, pancreas, brain, joints--you name it. Seems...
  14. Nope, no monthly fees!!! (Unlike Club Penguin.)
  15. "In America, researchers found some infants who are being vaccinated using multidose vials with thimerosal can receive 62.5 micrograms of mercury per visit. This is 100 times more than the intake considered safe for the average six-month-old by the US Environmental Protection Agency. In June 1999 the FDA discovered that: "Infants who receive thimerosal...
  16. I'm wondering what the need is for a biopsy if the blood test was extremely positive? If the biopsy is negative, would the doctor want you to feed your daughter gluten? My understanding is that biopsies are only accurate if they happen to hit an affected patch. Given that you have 20 feet of intestine, and they only take 4-6 1/2-inch samples, it's...
  17. Gee. It seems like all any restaurant has to do to CYA is to have an official statement on their gluten-free menu, like "We take great care in preparing gluten-free food for you, but due to the facts that gluten IS in our kitchen, and that human beings DO work here, we cannot absolutely guarantee the gluten-free-ness of our food. Please help us by asking...
  18. You'd think I'd know better by now, but I just quickly scanned it to make sure that the nuts were peanuts (which my husband can eat--he can't eat walnuts or pecans), and it never occurred to me that they might contain wheat flour, so I didn't look. GRRRRRRRR!!!
  19. I am unDX, and have no idea what ugliness you mean--would you mind explaining? I do know that being diagnosed can be very problematic--insurance companies can use it as an excuse not to insure you, or, at the very least, to raise your rates. Doctors use it as an excuse to insist on ordering expensive and invasive procedures, not to rule out anything...
  20. I don't know where you got your information, but YOU ARE VERY WRONG. The stuff that mercury is bound to in those compounds helps the mercury go right through the blood brain barrier, where it causes major problems, and it also cannot then be excreted.
  21. Yikes! Which root beers and lemonades do have gluten?
  22. I was wondering if the coughing might be due to reflux--which is a major glutening symptom in myself. Reflux can also cause an asthma response. YOu have definitely been through the wringer! I hope the improvements continue. I also wanted to advise giving a "schedule" pep talk before going to the store. Example: "We are going to the store in...
  23. I only found out about my problem with gluten when I developed DH (dermatitis herpetiformis--as truly HORRIBLE rash). If you had asked me if I had any other symptoms, I would have said no. But then I went off gluten (100% off, your husband is wrong, it's easy), and lost 20 pounds of fat, stopped feeling bloated, stopped having alternating almost-diarrhea...
  24. The problem with allergy tests is that many, many people have serious issues with gluten and dairy, but they are not ALLERGY issues, they are autoimmune issues, so they don't test positive on the allergy test. Celiac is an autoimmune disorder, not an allergy. (It took me months to figure that out, if that makes you feel any better.) And celiac DOES...
  25. Gluten can be "hidden" in many safe-looking foods, like soy sauce (most have wheat as the second ingredient! ), Rice Krispies (contains malt, which is gluten), COrn Flakes (same thing), even deli tuna salad often is stretched out with bread crumbs. Don't get frazzled--we've ALL gone through the shock of discovering what a glutenated world this is! ...
