  1. I second all that's been said so far! (Yes, you should look at your creams, lotions, etc - but I don't seem to have a problem with them - but after checking I discovered that most of what I used doesn't have gluten anyway - I was LUCKY!). Going gluten-free will be a pain at first - especially if you have to eat out a lot - or if you travel a lot. I have...
  2. Oh My! ANOTHER medical nightmare story of getting DH and/or Celiac diagnosed when it is not the standard textbook newborn "failure to thrive w/horrible diarhia" case! I've been there, done that - similar to your story in many respects, unfortunately. I, too, self-diagnosed, but at least I had finally found a Dr. willing to listen (an Allergist) and I...
  3. I've never had a problem with Maltodextrin (in USA). Neither with "natural flavorings" - Clan Thompson Food Smartlist says that it is generally Gluten Free but may not be if in a meat item. Since this is the glaze, it is probably ok. Calling company would be good. What is the brand? Also, I've had to make my own glaze a few times and it wasn't very hard...
  4. Just looked at Clan Thompson Celiac Food Smart List. Only the Plain yogurts (Activa PLAIN, low fat plain, natural plain, etc) are claimed to be Gluten Free. WOW I guess I have to stop eating my fruit on the bottom!
  5. I have been successfully eating Dannon Fruit on the Bottom. My understanding was that the Low Fat, "Fit", Fat Free etc were risky. In fact I noticed that many of them have "modified food starch" which I won't trust. Fruit-on-the-bottom doesn't have that, so I've been eating it. Haven't noticed the pectin thing, because I don't have a pectin problem -...
  6. All of what you say is true! It can takes months to rid the Gluten from you system enough to completely clear up DH. AND, it takes a LOT of diligence to be completely gluten Free. I thought I was for months, turned out I wasn't. Once I really became obsessive about being truly Gluten Free instead of Gluten "Lite" I had noticeable improvement in the DH...
  7. I have not used Namaste bread mix, but I've used lots of others and I've had that problem as well as "over-rising"! As it turns out there are many many factors that determine how the bread will rise: temperature, humidity, altitude, temperature of mix that yeast is in, amount of sugar to make yeast rise, time, stars alignment (LOL), and more. When you...
  8. Yes, much debated this is! I have DH and sensitive skin and I have never watched out for gluten stuff in topicals and I've never had a problem. Iodine-containing things were a problem until I got the DH under control (during active break-out). I don't use lipstick but maybe once a week and I don't get shampoo in my mouth. I have avoided oatmeal lotions...
  9. I was in COSTCO yesterday looking at all those holiday Belgian/Swiss/German etc candy offerings that I normally LOVE so much. MANY had wheat in them - mostly the filled candies. However, I did find (and buy) some truffles made in Belgium - Gavarny brand name, that do not have wheat or barley and are made in a facility that processes only tree nuts. VERY...
  10. TSA will probably not allow the can through security - no liquids/gels/creams/etc can go through security - even in sealed and unopened containers and even with a medical letter! The pouches SHOULD pose no problem, but if the TSA agent doesn't like it they will make you throw it away or get out of line and go back to check it (impossible). You can also...
  11. I use Aquafresh Extreme Clean with no problems. According to Clan Thompson Aquafresh is Gluten Free.
  12. It's highly unlikely that a TRUE sugar - of any kind, any brand - is the culprit, IF it is just 100% sugar (sucrose, fructose, glucose, etc) bought in the U.S. Blends of stuff are a different story because "sweeteners" include lots of starches including malts and barley, etc. I am not familair with the brand you are talking about. I just did a little research...
  13. Hi ALL, me again! 19 months (approx) into this - I still mainly have just DH but when I get badly glutened accidentally I'm now getting the diarhea and gas (a recent development, when I KNOW I've been glutened - like when I found out that IHOP puts pancake batter in their scrambled eggs as well as omlettes - 2 hours after eating there). As a test of the...
  14. I started with a mix (Bread by Anna) in a bread machine and it was OK but I had to stop it and mix the bread about 3 times during the cycle - a lot of work. Much better than pre-made - which made me gag, toasted or not. Then I tried Bette Hagman's recipes in my machine and they were a disaster. Went back to the Anna's mix and tried it in the oven and it...
  15. I second the vote of confidence. I eat these all the time. I also eat the Salt & Pepper ones (WHEN I can find them). Given the ELISA test mentioned, I'm tempted to try the Beer & Cheddar ones too ....BUT.....Kettle Chips are my favorite brand of chips!
  16. If, for some reason, you are very committed to getting a medical confirmation/diagnosis for your daughter then you will have to hunt and hunt and travel until you find a practice that is knowledgeable in Celiac or a Dr. that is willing to go to his medical library and research! If you aren't that committed to a medical diagnosis (and I've found it isn't really...
  17. I have come to the conclusion (after about 100 different baking epidsodes with both oven and machine and several different mixes) that each and every loaf or batch (rolls, breadsticks, muffins, etc) will turn out different than the previous EVEN with the same recipe, same machine, same settings. I have researched and discovered that yeast and dough are...
  18. My understanding and research reveals that unless it says "MALT Vinegar" it IS gluten-free!! I've never had a problem with anything with just plain "vinegar" or "Distilled vinegar"..... Yes, might want to check the Taco Shells or something else.
  19. I don't eat them regularly, but when I do, I don't seem to notice any problems!
  20. My story is very similar. I had an allergist who, along with my own research (and years of rash and negative allergy tests) decided that it was DH and Celiac once 1) The Dapsone cleared it up initially and 2) when it came back after stopping Dapsone, it cleared up again (more slowly) by going STRICTLY 100% gluten-free - vice Gluten-lite. I had negative...
  21. Ditto for Costco as well as Equate (Wal-Mart), CVS, and BJ's.
  22. I'm just now getting the hang of bread - and haven't done a cake. BUT, for the treat for her birthday in school......how about the candy or carmel apples (without the nuts) that they sell at Halloween time (I saw them in the store this weekend)? You'd have to check the ingredients label for stuff in the candy/carmel. Store bought is probably required...
  23. Last year I got the FluMist from my place of work. I work for a military unit (but I'm a civilian) and they set up a table at the front entrance and everyone (I mean EVERYONE) got a FluMist. They didn't even ask for names or signatures. I found out later that it wasn't FDA approved for people over 45 (I'm 55 and the guy behind me had to be in his 60s)...
  24. Like in all professional fields there are multiple "camps"........and nutrionists have their camps and different theories - some not so scientifically accurate! There are some that think Oats are ok, some that think some derivatives of wheat germ are ok, and various things like that. My nutritionist told me be strict about anything to do with Wheat, Barley...
  25. I take 4 Benadryl every night before bed (allergies worst at night). I usually have the generic (Diphenhydramine HCL) from Costco or BJs or Walmart (Equate). I have not had any problem with them.
