ARCHIVED Peanut Intolerance.....REALLY?
mommida replied to KW's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Unfortunately it is not uncommon for new to the diet Celiacs to discover they have another food intolerance. Peanuts are actually in the legume family so beware of soy, chickpeas, and others. That being said keep a food journal (which you seem to have kept track of what caused reaction). If symptoms persist, go for further testing. (after years gluten... -
ARCHIVED Frustration of no clear diagnosis after months
mommida replied to Sterling's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
There are two things that stand out for current research. Zonulin levels, which are showing up in non-celiac individuals who are reacting to gluten. Eosinophilic Gastro Intestinal Disorders (EGID)- linked to Celiac disease especially if gluten is a "trigger" the individual. (but eosinophil levels should have been screened by the pathologists in your biopsy... -
ARCHIVED Should I worry?
mommida replied to mareahf's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I would not fully trust the genetic testing. If you start noticing symptoms, you should start seeking answers with a (pediatrician) gastroenterologist. -
What blend of gluten free flours? I have noticed I have problems with sorghum.

ARCHIVED Dermatitis herpetiformis without the Celiac gene?
mommida replied to Bedette's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Every blood test (including genetic testing) has a 30% human error rate. Genetic testing may have a 98% accuracy rate listed - You can be the 2% error rate. Not all genes for Celiac/ DH/ gluten intolerance are not identified. Genes mutate. Genetic anomalies do and can occur. i.e. More cases of chimerism are being identified. You may...- 3 replies

ARCHIVED Support?
mommida replied to Kaj242's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm going to chime in. Some people are kitchen wipey freaks. The problem they are using the same wash clothe and wiping everything it. They are just spreading gluten and germs everywhere. It may appear clean but it is not. This happens at my sister-in-laws house. Cross contamination from not even using soap to wash and clean things in between. ... -
ARCHIVED Tmi Topic: Poo Troubles
mommida replied to lexibrowning's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hey. Just chiming in. To the original poster's list of foods eaten, that doesn't seem to have a lot of fiber content. I'm going to suggest my tried and true "helper", FIGS. 2 dried figs a day can work wonders. The little bit of grit to them seems to be a colon scrubber, the Potassium level also helps flush out the system to the point eating figs... -
ARCHIVED Testing for vitamin etc. deficiencies after celiac diagnosis
mommida replied to villi-lover's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Vitamin deficiencies can continue to be a problem after years of diagnoses. There are not many gluten free breads that are vitamin and nutrient fortified compared to gluten mainstream products. For example my daughter was diagnosed with vitamin D deficiency 10 years on a gluten free diet. Not to mention an iron test is done at every yearly check up... -
ARCHIVED ragu alfredo sauce?
mommida replied to 1398-Days's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've always heard that product is gluten free. I make my own alfredo sauce with cream cheese, butter, milk, and parmesan cheese. ~ Add spices to your liking. If you need specific measurements search the Kraft 15 minute alfredo recipe. -
ARCHIVED how long does gluten stay in your system?
mommida replied to 1398-Days's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I can very likely be a vitamin D deficiency from gut damage and season change. Just think about the added stress of holiday/ family gatherings/ society in general with current issues. (Just recently my spouse's Christmas party and a few people mentioned the California shooting and were definitely on edge.) Relax, take care of yourself, and definitely... -
ARCHIVED Problems with Kinnikinnick
mommida replied to Dreamcherub's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Kinnikinnick uses pea starch in the flour blend and other products. The company has said in the past that it is completely gluten free and doesn't even allow employees to bring gluten foods into the workplace. Keep a food journal to help track down any other food intolerances you might have.- 2 replies

ARCHIVED Gluten In Breast Milk
mommida replied to Heather-707's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Breastmilk has mother's ANTIBODIES in it. (From research I have seen it also has gluten in it.) It is possible your baby's gluten reaction symptoms are from you. If you weren't Celiac or gluten sensitive before, you could be now. The stress of the pregnancy would be a likely trigger for auto immune disease. There is also another scenario for...- 23 replies

ARCHIVED new symptoms, pleasevread and advise
mommida replied to gypsyl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
A viral illness can trigger Celiac. Gluten is a complex protein chain for the body to break down. Avoiding gluten when the body is under stress from an auto-immune disease seems to improve symptoms in many. If you want to get a "gold standard" medical diagnoses, you have to continue eating gluten. Your doctor should have tested you when you requested... -
ARCHIVED Not sure what's going on.
mommida replied to Lilbarista's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I went into the ER because of pain I can't even describe. They called the surgeon, and were going to prep me for surgery. Scared the crap out of me and I said I would go through the testing and know for sure what they were taking out before going into surgery. Lost a lot of weight for the 2 weeks of testing. Ultrasound, MRI, and HIDA. HIDA is the proper... -
ARCHIVED Gingerbread House School Project
mommida replied to weluvgators's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The gluten free graham crackers are not even close to the same size as gluten counter parts. I would describe the difference between icing and frosting as the texture. Icing is more of a pourable liquid and frosting can be lifted and spread with a butter knife. The ice cream cone can be pointed side up as a cone "tree" frosted then add decorations... -

ARCHIVED New on this. About Symptoms. (Anxiety, Reflux)
mommida replied to nevada-'s topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thyroid issues can also cause palpatations. Low vitamin B12 is known to cause anxiety. I think the low B12 and Potassium levels are really suspect as most peeps end up here because of searching severe "D". Does any one know of a way to bring down high cortisol levels? -
The most concerning part of these posts to me "food stuck in throat" "hairball" "Prilosec worked then it didn't" "rapid weight loss" and "gluten" Go to a Gastroenterologist with experience in Celiac and Eosinophilic Esophagiits (or EGID Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disorders) Depending on the week the statistical number of an association to Celiac...

ARCHIVED Not sure what's going on.
mommida replied to Lilbarista's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Have you had your gallbladder checked? The pain is in your lower ribs on the right side (front) and even feels like someone is stabbing you in the back? If you go in to urgent care or emergency when the pain is bad and your stomach is extra gurgly they might just take it out that night. "off to college" you must be younger and don't fall into the common... -
ARCHIVED fatigue while adjusting to gluten-free?
mommida replied to elizabelle's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I had my vitamin D level checked and it was low. I was put on fifty thousand units once a week for 8 weeks. I now am supposed to be taking a daily supplement, which I constantly seem to forget. Depending on where you live , it is very common. Having Celiac just seems to compound problems with absorbing nutrients. -
ARCHIVED Gingerbread House School Project
mommida replied to weluvgators's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Kinniknnik vanilla wafers are very suitable to what I remember 'nilla wafers to be. I can't remember the brand of graham crackers that we tried last, but all of the gluten free substitutions have been very hard and thick. -not like graham crackers at all. There is no edible Twizzler gluten free alternative. The best you can do is cut Fruit by... -
ARCHIVED Possible candidate? Symptoms/test results inside.
mommida replied to mcG900's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Layman's terms... You have tested positive for the DQ2. You have a gene commonly associated with Celiac. You have not tested positive for Celiac, you just have the prewired body system to develop Celiac or DH. -
ARCHIVED genetic tests
mommida replied to CherylS's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Sorry you feel snubbed. My laptop died, so I jumped on someone elses computer today. I am not a full believer in genetic testing as the end all definitive answer. My family went through the genetic testing and had some questionable results. I questioned the results and was told by Prometheus labs... Genes can mutate, there is still the 2% known miss... -
ARCHIVED 10 Year Old Son's Labs
mommida replied to Corrie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm glad the testing (even though it was a hard long road) was done in such a positive way. To be presented with information at diagnoses is such a positive reinforcement. Some advice for a child's diagnoses... Keep gluten food snacks and treats available/on hand at all times. Not being able to eat with everyone else sucks. Unexpected food celebrations... -
ARCHIVED Finally Got Genetic Testing Results
mommida replied to cityelle's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My genetic test result from Prometheus labs was very puzzling. The doctors office did not give me the results, but informed me I was negative for the Celiac genes. (12 years ago) Now I really questioned this because my daughter's result was positive for 2 Celiac genes DQ2 and DQ8. I wanted the test done over again, because they couldn't even tell me if...
