Celiac.com - Celiac Disease & Gluten-Free Diet Support Since 1995

  1. Kathleen, your post made me chuckle - I use same methods but I am lactose intolerant and sometimes don't watch my diet (my hubby is celiac). There's an expensive mall by me, Short Hills Mall, and their ladies room has "cubicles" instead of bathroom stalls. Each lady has her own "space" fully walled in once she closes the door. Unfortunately, that mall...
  2. With the fact that there's been intermarriage and migration for decades-who knows centuries! there's the possbility that any nationality could have had an ancestor who had the gene for celiac.
  3. I try to spread the word when I go out to eat (when I am not with celiac hubby like out w/co workers during lunch or alone). I give the waitress/waiter a CSA pamphlet and tell her that celiac disease exists; ask her/him if they've ever gotten a customer to ask for gluten-free meal or at least ask that nothing have wheat in it? Some say yes, some say...

    ARCHIVED Grrrr....

I agree with you Sally - women are more likely to go to doctor before a man does. At least that's true with my celiac husband. Someone in an earlier post mentioned that the question of "what happens when you eat gluten?" when posed by a non celiac question should be left to the imagination of the person asking. Before I understood celiac I wish...
  5. How about the more convenient pills? or wafers? Anyone know of gluten-free formulas?

    ARCHIVED Awareness

I go in spurts on this. This is a topic that I am not shy to talk about; it's just the time and place sometimes don't lend themselves to the opportunity. I purchased the celiac "living a full life" from the offical org and I give them out (sometimes I make editorial comments in the margins or yellow highlighter) ; I leave them in all waiting rooms...
  7. I know this about Beano; that if you are allergic to mold or pennicillin you're allergic to Beano too.
  8. Q: Is Beano gluten-free? I didn't think it was gluten-free?
  9. Q: did any of you have pheripherial neuropathy due to B12 deficiency that lead to needing the shots?
  10. Bernadette: Not sure but I think I checked Fiber Choice; but please do so and post their reply. Thanks
  11. RE: Cocoa and Fruity Pebbles Don't we have to be concerned about cross contamination with this manufacturer?
  12. Richard, I agree with what you are saying, but it's annoying. I am an insurance underwriter (occupation) and if a customer calls me to find out if something is "covered" on their insurance policy I'd better know if "it's in there" or not. Why aren't these manufacturers held to the same standards? If I tell someone that yes, "blah blah" is covered...
  13. Ok, this is a new product. I emailed Crest to find out if it's gluten-free. Their response is that they don't use gluten in their ingredients, but they don't know if their products contains trace amounts of gluten ....please check with your doctor for more info. Blah, blah, blah. I emailed back and told them that since they made this product, my doctor...
  14. Q: When was the last time you had a blood test for liver function and pancreatic function and gall bladder? Sometimes back pain can come from disease of these organs.
  15. BamBam Were you specifically looking for a chewable tablet? We are - no chewables appear to be gluten-free. Let me know too if you all know of one....
  16. These types of responses from companies disturbs me somewhat. Don't they know what's in their products? If it's a grain distilation - then what grain? They don't appear to know themselves -- is it corn or the WOBR type? And, why would my doctor have any idea what's in their product? He's a doctor, not a psychic. Methinks that this is...
  17. I'm in NJ. I don't think BC has been around here since I was a kid. We also do not have these stores in north jersey: Safeway, Tom Thumbs, HyVee, Food Lion, Vons, Dominicks, Genuardi's, Gaint Food, Randalls; hence, that's why I need to know by Brand Name. We have A & P, Shop Rite, Pathmark, Acme, Foodtown, Kings.
  18. RE: Dangerous Grains As most here in forum know, my husband is celiac, I am not. After reading Dangerous Grains it made ME not want to eat wheat! Maybe the "Dummies" publishers should make "Going gluten free for Dummies!" as the beginner book. RE: consecrated hosts in Catholic faith. As I recall, the host is not to be dropped to the ground...
  19. Thanks for info, but what is "BC?"
  20. Does anyone know of a gluten-free name brand aspirin? Not iburophen or tylenol..regular old fashioned aspirin. St. Joseph's said they can guarantee cross contamination
  21. Rhinestone, for what it's worth, contact the pharamaceutical company who makes that prescription and sometimes they have a program for people without insurance. You will have to apply and maybe show your income, but if they approve you you'll get that prescription for less than the full price.
  22. this is a puzzle for us: about 18 mos after going gluten-free; after being misdiagnosed fr 27 years, my husband developed pheripheral neuropathy in feet and legs, and now it's spread to arms......He's not getting any gluten in his diet and I know that as he eats basics and stuff like gluten-free Pantry that I make in dedicated bread machine, plain fish,...
  23. Dear Rhinestone: Did the ER give your husband a full blood profile, including a liver profile (checking bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase, etc.)? I am wondering if he has something along with celiac. But anyway, ask hospital for a copy of the records and the tests they did and take that to any new gastro you go to. This way they may not have...
  24. Yes, we do not purchase from Arrowhead Mills as they at one time last year said that there was a possiblity of cross contamination. their packaging doesn't exactly say gluten-free; it only says "made of gluten-free ingredients." My husband had reaction from their stuff and it wasn't worth the risk to keep buying from them. If only they would eliminate...
  25. try the site for "whole foods" and locate one in the general area of where you'll be staying. They are scattered all over the state (primarily in the wealthier areas....) You could also zero in on your most important product's manufacturer and give them a call and find out what stores in NJ near Toms River they distribute to. Toms River is close to...
