  1. Coin Op/Cass, It's great that you've found a diet solution for your celiac disease. My husband has had undiagnosed/misdiagnosed celiac disease for 26 years and under no circumstances can tolerate fruits, vegetables, soy and beans . Therefore, his only choices are plain meats & fish, dairy corn , rice, potatoes and other gluten-free starches ...
  2. We are waiting longer than normal for the test results due to the recent hurricanes in Florida. Their USA office is in Hollywood Florida, near Miami. The actual test is done in Yorkshire England. We should have the official report any day now. Yorkshire sends the report to Florida and then to the customer (us).
  3. Tanya, You've come to the right place. Everyone who is on this board gives of their experience and knowledge freely. My husband was just diagnosed almost a year ago and it's a whole new world. He had raging symptoms for years and doctors mis diagnosed as IBS for 27 years. He has yet to eat in a restaurant yet because he still can't get his symptoms...
  4. Late onset for my husband (he was 27). I have a co worker who was about 65 when he came down with celiac disease. Don't agonize over weight loss so much as to get him going on getting tested to confirm celiac, etc. The sooner he gets diagnosed the better - this way you know for sure. Other health conditions could make you lose weight and you want...
  5. I too thought we could get away without getting a new toaster....and I tried cleaning out the old one....cleaning it to the point of almost wanting to wash it out!! But my meticulous cleaning still couldn't dislodge all of the residue. There were layers of crumbs that unless I used a flashlight I couldn't see. I then realized that when using it for gluten...
  6. Has anyone used or eaten Montina flour? What does it taste like? What were your thoughts, comments or opinions.
  7. RE: York Lab Well, we are going into the 3rd week since we mailed in the blood test sample. They say it takes 3 weeks and that means that we should know the results any day now. It wasn't hard to take the sample - about 10 minutes between start to finish.
  8. Good luck celiac3270! Let us know how you made out, etc. Deb
  9. Jill, Mr. McGreevey is the current Governor of New Jersey. He is leaving office in November. He was originally the Mayor of Woodbridge.
  10. I think that if we go back to the problem that the little girl in Brielle had, it was because the Archdiosese wouldn't allow the gluten-free host in the first place. As to the wine, the communicant would never know if they had sipped the wine before the hosts were place into the chalice. Sometimes the host is kept in the chalice and wine before Mass...
  11. Dustin Don't be so willing to hang your hat on the first doctor's potential mis-diagnosis. My husband has been misdiagnosed for over 25 years and is terribly, terribly ill from not being gluten free for all those years. I applaud your second doctor for going out on a limb to suggest, even though your test results are mixed, that you may have celiac disease...
  12. I have a question concerning this topic: Since in Italy they screen people better for celiac disease and that would mean that there are more diagnosed and practicing celiacs than in USA, what does the Catholic Church do in Italy when it comes to wheat vs. rice communion hosts? Doesn't this subject come up there too?
  13. You're right Traci, people who don't understand celiac can sometimes be fresh when they speak to you. Has any celiac gotten this one yet? This is a non-celiac speaking: "I know someone who has celiac and they....." Almost as if it's a contest. Yes, they happen to know someone who has celiac , who doesn't have any other food sensitivities...
  14. Hi All I am really serious about what grains other than wheat were in Israel/middle east in Jesus' days. As an aside, Catfish's question about cannabalism was a point of argument for the founders of Christianity. One of the councils, I don't recall which, Nicene or one of them, some of the members rejected transubtantiation for this very reason...
  15. With regard to Catholic sacramental wine could be problemic as the Priest puts the communion hosts into it. Those hosts could defragment and leave gluten residue in the wine after all of the hosts are removed. A celiac could possibly ingest gluten by sipping the wine during the communion service. Giving the girl the communion wine is not a realistic answer...
  16. Booja (Bridget): Let me know if you want my directions on the gluten-free pantry bread mix extras that I use. Deb
  17. SoFi, Was the waitress under the impression that you were doing Atkins and your abstenance was due to only weight loss? Her comment is bizzare if she knew your real concern. Deb
  18. Gillian, Which winery said they use flour? Husband is very gluten senstitive and we would have to avoid them. Thanks, Debbie
  19. Well my husband sent his blood sample to York on 8/16 so we now have to wait for the test results.
  20. Kathy, Lactose intolerance can be tested for at the gastro's office. It's a device that you breathe into a few times and it measures something in breath. Several years ago gastro tested my husband like this, and he passed the test. My husband is celiac and I am severely lactose intolerent. I have been lactose intolerant for about 26 years - as...
  21. Hate to be cynical, but maybe they didn't offer the first priest enough money.... I too was denied being a Godmother to my niece by them (in 2002 not 20 years ago!) because I didn't marry Catholic (I got married in a Baptist Church). But, get this, a woman who never married, but had live in boyfriends - year after year --- is good enough to be a Godmother...
  22. Sofi Your in laws are a problem.....I know how Italian families are (I am one) and they like you to have Sunday macaroni with them. Perhaps your husband can tell them positive things about how in Italy a lot of people have celiac and that their medical system screens people better than in USA. I also had the experience of speaking to a fellow who...
  23. The Celiac Sprue Assn (www.csaceliacs.org) sells a tract for .50 each. A little pricey for handing out....I do purchase them to leave them in waiting rooms and other places but I hand them out selectively. I wrote my own one page overview of it and I keep copies in my car. I was approached by some Girl Scouts selling cookies and declined to buy...
  24. Hi We will look into bacterial overgrowth... he tried the pro biotics (acidopholis) for a while, and they gave him the most unbearable (smell) gas. We are pursuing other areas like food sensitivities. celiac3270: I liked your response and kept forgetting to thank you for it. You have a profound sense of what is right.
  25. Hi all I knew I had to do this for a while...so I visited a psychologist to discuss this whole coping issue, as the care taker. My husband isn't doing very well since going gluten-free since Oct 03. He still can't gain weight and still has upset intestine incidents, even though I know he's eating gluten-free. I have made all of the precautions...
