I have about 10 links to eating out in NY in this post:

Yep--and Rich Gannon (NFL quarterback) has a celiac daughter...Danielle, who made the chocolate cake mix
-
Yup...they're not the most well-liked celiac group...Richard doesn't like them at all, either
-
Oh, you can opt out anytime you want. With many groups, you need to join to post or even read messages. I've joined a couple Yahoo groups (but I read more than post)...anyway, I joined one for the New York area--then discovered that there are virtually no posts made and a lot of spam...so I unjoined...it's not a big commitment.
-
That's exactly what happens to me sometimes...like I said, I don't subscribe to many topics, but the with the ones I do, it does the same thing.

Found this on another Yahoo support group (SillyYaks). We have a "celebrity" celiac...the person in The Incredibles (pretty good movie for animation, by the way).
I read it at IMDB.com after watching on the Conan rerun tonight.sara Vowell (violet in the incredibles) has celiac. She is also an
author, and does alot of public radio stuff too. I just thought I
would share.

Indeed--the general consensus is that Applebees is unaccomodating. Try Outback Steakhouse
-
I've had that happen...sort of. I get notified of replies to one topic every now and then...and then I don't get notified for some posts...and then it works again later.
I don't really use that feature, though, since I check MANY, MANY times per day...so I just view new posts every time.

You sound celiac to me...1% of the population has it--gives you good odds to start--and then, your symptoms match up. Actually, the most common symptom is fatigue...not diarrhea, not gas...not any GI symptom. You have the most common symptom, along with a few other "typical" celiac symptoms: mood swings, depression, and irritability. I think you should get tested--and don't let your doctor talk you out of the notion that you might have celiac. Doctors recently realized that a person with celiac disease doesn't need to be and most often, isn't the short, thin person with bloating, gas, stomach pains, diarrhea, anemia, and nutritional deficiencies.....doctors finally realized that there is no TYPICAL celiac...because nothing is typical about it. No two people have the same exact symptoms and there are over 200. So get tested and welcome

Yep--Gatorade is gluten-free, as is Powerade and Propel.

Oh, I found this:

Looks like somebody else had the idea of starting a gluten-free Weight-Watchers support group as well
. This one is on Yahoo...you could start your own (free) if you have a Yahoo e-mail account (also free), or you could join this one, which already has 48 members.
-
Yup...that was in Richard's list (above).....seems like he really did his homework
Yea--I don't like it, because it seems like you can never try anything new--or if you do, it's a drag because you need to call the company, hold for ten minutes in the store, ask them questions.......ugg.

My mom said to me at the beginning of the diet that she dreaded going into a grocery store because she just got so depressed seeing all the stuff I couldn't eat...now it's not a big deal, but it was that way for the first month or two. It will get better...
Roo, I'm a teenaged boy also (14)

If it's the EMA IgA, it will only read positive or negative (with no numbers). They probably ran the Antigliadin IgA. For that test, normal levels are less than 18. For the tTG IgA, normal levels are less than 13, but I suspect it'll be the antigliadin
Now, one positive test isn't enough to diagnose you completely or completely dismiss celiac. It's helpful also to do the Antigliadin IgG.
This table explains whether you should suspect celiac disease or not, based on which tests are positive or negative.
EMA IgA/AGA IgA/AGA IgG/Interpretation
+ + + celiac disease 99% Probable
+ - + celiac disease probable
+ + - celiac disease probable
+ - - celiac disease probable
- + + celiac disease less likely
- - + celiac disease less likely
- + - celiac disease less likely
- - - celiac disease very unlikely

With natural and artificial flavorings, you always need to check with the company except if they're in a product made by Kraft. If there's gluten in a flavoring, modified food starch, etc., it will be listed on the label. See this article for a complete explanation

Centrum is gluten-free, but I don't know about liquid vitamins. With the flavorings in vitamins, you also need to contact the manufacturer to ask if the product is gluten-free.

With natural and artificial flavorings, you always need to check...they may or may not contain gluten. The same goes for modified food starch, which you should be checking, as well. With the company Kraft, however, you only need to read the label. If there is wheat in the natural flavors, it will be listed in parentheses. See this article:

This comes from the celiac.com site about caramel coloring:
1) If this ingredient is made in North America it is likely to be gluten-free.3) The problem with caramel color is it may or may not contain gluten depending on how it is manufactured. In the USA caramel color must conform with the FDA standard of identity from 21CFR CH.1. This statute says: "the color additive caramel is the dark-brown liquid or solid material resulting from the carefully controlled heat treatment of the following food-grade carbohydrates: Dextrose (corn sugar), invert sugar, lactose (milk sugar), malt syrup (usually from barley malt), molasses (from cane), starch hydrolysates and fractions thereof (can include wheat), sucrose (cane or beet)." Also, acids, alkalis and salts are listed as additives which may be employed to assist the caramelization process.

Potatoes work well for me, too. Also, gluten-free chicken broth

Good point...maybe she wants some suggestions for sweet gluten-free items?

I got these suggestions for coping when you've been glutened from another forum:
If you have been glutenized, these help:bananas
papayas (fresh, juice, pills)
aloe vera juice (in Walmart or Target pharmacies, or drug stores)
tonic water
okra is excellent for soothing an irritated GI tract. It contains mucilage which acts as a coating. Amazingly effective. Good for constipation, too, faster than the usual prunes
