  1. Thank you :)--it's been 19 days now w/o getting sick--I haven't gone that long in over a year!

Really? Who else has this? Also, I'm not trying to suggest that you have that-- do you still get that symptom or was it just in the past? If you no longer get the symptom, I think it would effectively rule out malrotation. If not--well, you said it started as a child...so who knows?

  4. Hmm...I don't know--I used to have a strange abdominal symptom--not sure if it was celiac or the malrotation, but when I felt sick, all the muscles in my stomach would tense up completely--making it look I had really amazing abs  and my stomach would....get sucked inwards--without me trying to or anything....I think that was malrotation, not celiac, but another weird stomach thing. Sorry I can't help with your situation, cause mine was basically the opposite.

Not sure if this is at all helpful....just wanted to point it out...good resource for others to. Here's the link: https://www.celiac.com/st_prod.html?p_prodi...-48105166870.36

  6. I go to Dr. Levy (but he only takes kids) at Columbia Presbyterian. The nutritionist you're probably refering to is Anne Lee -- Dr. Green sends all his patients to her if they need to see a nutritionist.

Also, I had my surgery done at Columbia Presbyterian. It's a very clean, new-looking hospital--nice nurses--good doctors.....I would definitely go there above any other hospital.

  7. It's not that short. In comparison to how long someone will be gluten-free, (for the rest of his or her life) it is--but I think that one year is a big step--it's usually when symptoms are leaving or have already left, when you know the ropes of the diet very well, etc. I've only been gluten-free for a year, but I already feel like I know so much about celiac, even though it's been a short time in relation to how long I'll be on a gluten-free diet--66 years if I live till 80 :)

  8. (Just to add a thought I've just had - why on earth don't they make testing for celiac disease routine? It could actually save the NHS money because the 'side effects' of celiac disease wouldn't then happen - ie some cancers, a lot of osteoporosis, a lot of unnecessary testing for 'other causes' of symptoms such as 'gastro problems' and anaemia, etc etc. Plus there's also the cost to the nation as a whole of all the time taken off 'sick', when ONE blood test (plus a fairly simple procedure, if necessary) would prevent all this!)

I think I might already be turning into a 'campaigner'on this issue!

Yes--you're making very valid points :) --especially since it's so common--1 in 133 have it and 97% of celiacs aren't getting proper treatment (the gluten-free diet--in most cases because they don't know they have celiac disease to begin with). It would make so much sense for the governments of a lot of these countries to screen for it--the US, UK, and all the Northern European countries (Norway, Sweden, etc.). Your points about increased productivity, prevention of cancer and other complications are very good :)

  9. That's great! Fun to watch, cause I've never seen anything on the news about it. I went crazy though, when they wrote "allergic to gluten" on the bottom of the screen!...lol. And then the news person said "I'm a little sensitive to wheat." Maybe she has it? Great to see, though--thank you so much! :D

  10. Yes--I read that article in....about four online support groups......just never thought to share here--will keep an eye out for things like these in the future.

And that's great--celiac is getting great publicity and this might help someone with osteoporosis get a diagnosis.

  11. My DW bought a tube of "Lay's Stax". They are the same thing as Pringles basically. I was looking at the label expecting to find the dreaded "modified food starch" which would mean uncertainty and thus my inability to enjoy them, when I saw printed on the side of the can right above the bar code, "This product is naturally free of gluten." :o

Other than on specialty health products, I have never seen this on any other packaged food before. How nice would it be if everybody did this? I don't normally eat a lot of this type of thing, but you can bet I'll be getting these from now on, as long as they keep this text on the label!

I know--that's terrific! This is a big step--now companies not only have gluten-free lists or ingredient listing policies, but a name-brand mainstream company wrote gluten-free on the package the way a specialty food company would in a health food store! A major victory for us all...maybe some other companies will follow this lead :)

I had heard about this before....and also about the dedicated lines Kaiti mentioned.

  12. I can sympathize with you--

People used to think it was all in my head as well--my mom couldn't understand why I would get sick so often--little did she know I had celiac and malrotation. The doctors thought it might be that I wanted attention....ugh...but at least people know it wasn't in my head now.

  13. Jello is made by Kraft. Any foods made by Kraft are gluten-free as long as there is no mention of wheat, rye, or barley in the ingredients list. Kraft has a policy that they will not hide these ingredients under a name such as "natural flavors" or "modified food starch."

    Heinz ketchup is gluten-free.

There is a pdf file with a two-week gluten-free menu: Open Original Shared Link

Finally, consult the food, products, and medications section--where many of your questions might already be answered--

  14. Today I got this message when I tried to log in:

From what I understand, the bandwidth limit can be reached when there's a large amount of activity--is that the reason or is there another one? Thanks, Scott-- I just want to know if we're getting so popular that this might become a problem :P:lol: or if there was some construction going on with the site or something--thanks.
