  1. Are you referring to the gluten-free prepared foods? I understand they're starting to integrate a gluten-free bakery into many stores. They just started with it in NY a few months ago and I think they started in the South East?
  2. No terribly unusual ones, but: cramping, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, gas, distention, low weight, pale complexion, and I guess mild depression/moodiness/irritability. The first...6 were very problematic, but are gone now. I've gained...26 pounds or 32% of my previous body weight (I was 5' 79 lbs at diagnosis and am now 5' 3" and 95.6 lbs and starting to...
  3. As Kaiti said, Splenda is gluten-free. If you begin to experience gastrointestinal symptoms from it, though, don't worry. Some people, celiac or not, will get diarrhea or other gastorintestinal symptoms from Splenda that they don't get from other sugars or sweetners even though it's gluten-free.
  4. Updated April 17. Yay!! We're well over 100 now! You might be celiac if... 1. The centerpiece on your dining room table is a bread machine. 2. Your bread looks like a moon rock and tastes like dried out Play Doh. 3. Your bread weighs more than any moon rock could possibly weigh. 4. The only way you will eat your bread is toasted. 5. You...
  5. Great! gluten-free restaurants (or restaurants w/ gluten-free menus) are just springing up in NY!
  6. Yep...Celiac is more American....coeliac is more British/Australian
  7. I like Ener-G the best...the tapioca loaf. Then the Kinniknick....but I don't think there really is a good store-bought gluten-free bread. And it's difficult to make homemade gluten-free bread. All gluten-free bread can be made.....more edible .......through toasting.
  8. Don't worry about mistakes in the beginning--all of us made many of them. You'll get used to the diet soon enough and you'll find all the problem areas. By the way, Milky Way Midnights are gluten-free as are regular Snickers (two alternatives). And Kraft will list any gluten on the label, so you know it's not under something questionable, such as modified...

    ARCHIVED Corn

That's a logical explanation. I also cannot live without potatoes

    ARCHIVED Corn

I looked it up and found everywhere that if you have a corn allergy, you need to eliminate all forms (and the sites listed tem).....this list included popcorn. I guess you can react differently (or not at all) to different foods the way we may react to a certain form of gluten more violently or differently than another.
  11. There we go....now it makes more sense.
  12. Ugg...gross ....I've never thought of ever getting one and never will
  13. We care...it's just that the time it takes for us to get back to you depends on how many people are on the board...and the traffic tends to come later in the day. You said that her oldest son always experienced food allergies. Was he tested for them and if so, was he also tested for celiac? Many celiacs have some intolerance or allergy in addition to...

    ARCHIVED Corn

Here are a few that mention corn. I found these with a search on the board. To find where the mentionings of corn are on a particular page, hold down on CTRL and hit F. This will bring up a window to search for a specific word. Type in corn, press find, etc. Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link
  15. That doesn't mean she had the disease before. She had a predisposition to it, but it might never have developed into full-blown celiac. Certain things can trigger celiac disease, such as surgery or major stress....but it doesn't just bring out symptoms of a disease that was already there. Sorry, but I'm with Tiffany and Kimberly on this...
  16. Go here: Open Original Shared Link or as Kaiti said, to "My Controls" and then "edit signature". If you want to use any colors or bold font, etc, I would advise you to not click once, type and try to close them all correctly. Just highlight what you want to make..say, red, and then choose the color. Also keep in mind that if you do that there will...
  17. Wow.....what site was that on? Do you still have the link?
  18. Ahhh....some more good ones. Karen, you're back!

  20. Baked potato is the safest (in the skin) and maybe ask for entirely plain meat (steak, chicken, etc.)

ARCHIVED Do I Need A Dr.

You're correct.....cancer is often associated with intestinal cancer. Your doctor is entirely wrong to think that there is no connection, cause there's a very strong one. I'm not sure the exact statistic, but your chances are greatly increased if you're a celiac not adhering to the gluten-free diet. Welcome to the board
  22. Haven't heard of it.....but for vitamins that would aid in absorption, ask your doctor about taking folic acid.
  23. Now here's the complete list as of April 14....easily compiled for sending to people who would understand . We're up to 78! By the way, I love this topic! You might be celiac if... 1. The centerpiece on your dining room table is a bread machine. 2. Your bread looks like a moon rock and tastes like dried out Play Doh. 3. Your bread weighs...
  24. The first one looks easier to make, but I thought I'd share this anyway, since it does ask for carrot cake and chocolate cake recipes . You're welcome, Burdee ....though all I did was find it from somewhere else Glad the recipe was adaptable
