    ARCHIVED Twins

I have fraternal twins - one of them has tested positive for celiac, and the other didn't. But since fraternal twins are no more alike than other siblings (genetically speaking) I wouldn't expect her twin to have more than the 10% first degreee relative chance of having the disease as well.
  2. Off topic a little, there's a really good cinnamon roll recipe on www.eatingglutenfree.com. They are a lenghty process, but really really yummy.
  3. Ursa - I actually was trying to say the same thing . . . I guess I just wasn't clear enough about it. My point was that people with OCD are AWARE of their compulsions . . . but they feel impelled to do them anyway - even when they think they are odd or don't WANT to do them. Sometimes those compulsions are controllable for a while (sometimes people...
  4. Just wanted to throw in: if he doesn't know he's doing it, it is probably not OCD. With OCD, people know they are doing the tic-like behaviors, but feel that they must do them. Good luck with getting a diagnosis.
  5. Barb - In the Celiac Meeting Room section of the board, there's an "Anyone from Utah?" thread that might be of some help to you. You may find out that there are more people in your area dealing with the disease. Are you in northern or southern UT? There are free gluten-free cooking classes at the Provo Macey's about once a month that might be helpful...
  6. I know my sister went through this, and has sworn NEVER to take the depo shot again. I suggest that you ask around among your friends and find a popular OBGYN. Then make an appointment and ask for his/her advice. There are things they can do . .. none of them are immediate fixes, but it'll start you on the road. Good luck.
  7. You know, that weight would seriously worry me. I'm 5'2", and 115 is too thin for me - I start to look unpleasantly thin at that weight. Given than varying chest sizes (in women) can add or subtract 10 - 20 pounds, I would still be very concerned about that weight. I checked out some Ideal weight calculators ... here's the site, if you're interested...
  8. Vincent is only checking TCA's "Megan's gagging . .. " thread. He got hit pretty bad by a basher and bowed out of the forum. Which makes me sad . . . he was very informative and fun.
  9. It may be a virus, too. There's been a really nasty vomitting-diarhea-sulfer burps-nausea type bug going around here and there and everywhere. It tore through my family and some threw up once, some had vomitting and diarhea, and some had other combos of symptoms. I was just nauseated for a day (for which I am devoutly thankful, as the "Mom" is the one...
  10. I was just telling a newbie to check out nini's newbie link, and I suddenly realized that I haven't seen any posts from her for quite a while. Anyone know where she's been?
  11. Just wanted to add that your baby's picture is darling! Also, If you are looking for help on the diet, check out the recipes section on the main celiac.com site. There's also a lot of good "getting started" information on www.eatingglutenfree.com. Also, nini (on this forum) has a "newbie" package that can be found by clicking on the link under one...
  12. Another thing to look into is the possibility that he is still getting small amounts of unintentional gluten - from toothpaste, using a contaminated toaster, etc. One of the ways that a doctor can evaluate this is to re-run the celiac blood work - if his TTG levels are still high, it is an indication that gluten is somehow sneaking into his diet. Also...
  13. My neighbor described it as "kind of the reverse of Down's Syndrome". The Williams Syndrome website (Open Original Shared Link) says that "Williams syndrome is a rare, congenital disorder which occurs in 1 in 7,500 live births. Clinical diagnosis of Williams syndrome is based on a variety of physical and developmental characteristics. Medical diagnosis...
  14. Don't know that I had a whole lot of purpose in starting this topic except as a "head's up" sort of thing. One of my husband's Laboratory Magazines had an article on celiac that mentioned that the incidence of celiac is 10% for people with Down's, Turner's, or William's Syndrome. I have a friend whose son has William's, so after several weeks of thinking...
  15. Only read the last few posts, so I may be repeating a comment . . . but didn't Max Lucado write a book about some puppets who always put gold stars or black dots on each other depending on what they thought of each other? And the whole point was that when you ignore the stars and dots (because you love yourself, I guess), they fall off. I wonder: if...
  16. Sweetfudge - Sorry you didn't make it to the class. The roads were quite slick, though, so I completely understand. We should be posting the cinnamon roll recipe on our website soon, so just check in occasionally. They were really good! Betsy
  17. Does that ever bother the parents who never had to deal with celiac before they started music lessons? Aren't the auto correct features fabulous? Skipper - Have you tried ASL? I am not suggesting that you give up on the speech therapy, but you need to find a way to let him communicate in the meantime. And sign language can also help children...
  18. Another thing to note is that xanthan gum comes in different strengths. Sometimes I'll get a pkg. of xanthan gum that is so strong that I have to cut all my amounts in half when I make a recipe. That may be part of the problem. But if you are getting the batter will hold together without the xanthan gum, then just leave it out.
  19. You know, it is always a risk that a new child will have some sort of problem. Even very young mothers can have children with severe birth defects. Age does increase the risks of some problems (like Down's) but not others. The 2 children my mother had after she was 35 had no problems at all. And when the problems are very severe, a spontaneous miscarriage...
  20. Kelly - I noticed in your initial post that your family was, in general, eating gluten free. It is possible that this gluten light diet could have caused your kid's results to come back falsely negative. And since you are noticing such a marked improvement, I'd suggest you stick with the diet. Best wishes!
  21. Again, I don't think any of us intended to alienate anyone . . . we just had questions/answers about a topic that some of us have in common. I think it shows up in this thread because everyone knows that the LDS faith is based in Utah . . . so the initial supposition (of many people) is that "if you are from Utah, you are a Mormon". And about 50% of the...
  22. Ditto! Keep it up . . . make sure that you are giving her a nicely balanced diet, including a gluten free vitamin, and don't worry about the doctors. Just because he thinks he knows everything doesn't mean he's right.
  23. Don't worry about "having" to make things from scratch . . . gluten free things made from scratch tend to taste WAY better than the pre-made things anyway. Congrats on the up-coming scope date . . . let us know how things turn out.
  24. When I was pregnant, I would always throw up if I waited too long to eat .. . as long as I ate SOMETHING every two or three hours, I was usually okay. BUT when I had waited too long and knew I was goign to throw up, I really liked to eat mashed potatoes. They didn't really sound good or taste great, but they were REALLY easy to throw up. And once I...
  25. It is quite possible that his problems are at least contributed to by gluten. You could look at the website www.gfcfdiet.com for more information.
