  1. Steph - Sorry you had a crummy day . .. unfortunately, birthdays can be like that once you aren't living in your mother's house. You almost always have to make your own cake, on top of making dinner and doing the laundry and all the dishes. BLAH. And I was actually going to suggest the pregnant thing . .. . but I usually found that I felt a lot...
  2. I second tarnalberry's advice. Especially since you've got an aunt who has problems with gluten. These things run in families! You could also go to a dermatologist and have him/her biopsy your rash. But make sure it is a dermatologist who is familiar with Dermatitis Herpetiformis (I always spell that wrong ) and has done this procedure more than once...
  3. In my experience, adding extra baking soda will actually cause them to spread out more. What's your recipe? Maybe looking at the recipe will help us all figure out what's up.
  4. My guess would be that it's just a bug . . . especially if he's in school or goes to any sort of pre-school or Sunday school where he would be in contact with other kids. It's just that time of year. That said, there are people on here whose children do seem to get a fever with glutenings, I think. But I don't know that your response to it will be...
  5. Momma Goose - If I were you, I'd make something really good and gluten free (like cream puffs or something else that everyone loves) and take them over to her house and say "I can't really share these with you because they're so expensive to make, but I just wanted you to smell them and see how good they smell!" Okay, so I wouldn't actually do that...
  6. I'd get a lawyer and get as many written statements from the parents of the other children on the team as you can get. Also, I personally would ask the principle to please refrain from asking your son questions about this incident when you are not present. They shouldn't be harassing him in school like that.
  7. About the leaky gut: There is research being conducted right now by Dr. Fasano at the University of Maryland, that says that (for those with celiac disease) eating wheat is a direct cause of a leaky gut. Google the term "zonulin" for more information.
  8. taz - I'd take the recipe you know you like and use Bette Hagman's Featherlight mix to replace the flour. Add about 1/2 to 1 tsp. of xanthan gum per cup of flour mix. Try making one right now so you are certain of how it works before the holidays get here. Good luck!
  9. Just wanted to chime in with a little advice for making dinners: Check out the cookbook "Saving Dinner" by Leanne Ely. Most of the recipes are naturally gluten free, and those that call for flour or wheat products are generally easily modified (use corn tortillas instead of flour, etc.). Her recipes are WONDERFUL to eat and easy to cook. See if your local...
  10. Another thing to think about is the possibility that she might be having a reation to soy. I believe that Gerber cereals (which say Single Grain or something equally silly on the front ) almost all have soy in them as well as rice or oats or whatever. (At least, they did the last time I looked at them.) Now, you've mentioned that it seems she is feeling...
  11. What do you mean by Christmas cake? Fruitcake? or just a spicy "make the whole house smell like Christmas-time" sort of cake?
  12. Marlene - Can't remember if I've mentioned this to you before, but check out the cookbook "Saving Dinner". It has a lot of wonderful, naturally gluten free recipes that are DELICIOUS. Also, and I'm sure you know this, if your children are old enough to drive cars, they are old enough to help with dinner! They are also old enough to do their...
  13. I believe that for the tests to be accurate, he'll have to be eating gluten for at least 3 months. (That's the recommendation, anyway.) If you are going to be worrying about this for years if you don't have a definitive diagnosis, then I'd suggest that you go through with the gluten challenge. My daughter's bloodwork came back "Indeterminate", but I knew...
  14. Justin - Where is "here" (in general geographic terms)? It is possible that there are people on this board from your area who might be able to form a support network with you. Try a shout-out in the Celiac Meeting Room part of the board . .. you may find somebody! Welcome!
  15. Welcome, curious! Celiac can have sudden onset. It is occasionally triggered by times of severe stress (emotional, physical, whatever). My sister knows of a girl (a friend's sister-in-law . . . doesn't this start to sound like an Urban Legend? "I swear it happened to a relative of a close neighbor of mine! Or was it a neighbor of a close relative...
  16. I think that occasional depression is also a result of the diagnosis of celiac. Any life changing diagnosis can send you into a tailspin with all of the "stages of grief" included. (Denial, anger, depression, and acceptance are the main ones). And they tend to come and go. Sometimes the diagnosis is fine and doesn't bother you and then, suddenly, it's...
  17. Were you 75 lbs. overwight when you lost that much, or was it way too much weight to lose? One of the things to keep in mind is that some people who have celiac gain weight precisely BECAUSE of their problems with gluten. Their bodies go into "famine" mode and pack on all the fat they can store because (as far as the body can tell) there just aren't enough...
  18. Just wanted to mention that my sister's family hosted an exchange student with egg allergies . . . my sister has celiac and is dairy intolerant, so it made their meal planning a little interesting, but they did it! However, my sister was an emergency placement because the student's first family dropped her because of her allergies. So make sure that your...
  19. Hooray! Even about the hairbow . . . because now you know that she CAN swallow . . . and it's just a question of when she WILL And, Vincent, glad to see you post, even just a short one here. I was sorry you felt driven away.
  20. I think you're right. Sorry . . . I forgot about the dairy free for a minute.
  21. Don't have much helpful info to add, but just wanted to say I hope you can figure things out. And, though I'm not positive, I wouldn't be surprised if stress is playing at least a small part in the reaction - it's possible that the added stress (and it sounds like he's had a lot of added stress recently) has been enough to decrease the ability of his immune...
  22. Okay . .. here it is: Almond Poppyseed Cake with Lemon Glaze 2 1/2 c. featherlight mix 1/2 c. gluten-free mix (recipes for these flour mixes are at the bottom) 2 tsp. xanthan gum 1 1/2 tsp. salt 1 1/2 tsp baking powder 3 eggs 1 1 /2 c. milk 1/2 c. oil 2 1/4 c. sugar 1 1/2 Tbs. poppy seeds 1 1/2 tsp almond extract 1 1/2 tsp vanilla Combine...
  23. Just wanted to add a "Welcome"! Just wanted to second the suggestion that you stick with "naturally" gluten free foods for a while. Potatoes, rice, beans, meat, plain spices (rosemary, thyme, chili powder, etc . . . some of the spice combinations include flour, so check labels). Check out the cookbook "Saving Dinner" for evening meal recipes that are fabulous...
  24. More Brainstorming . . . Just wanted to add a "Ditto" on the Dairy/Soy suggestion. My friend's little girl (who is gluten free) wakes up all night long when she's had dairy - she has nightmares, too, which make it harder for her to go back to sleep. And sometimes the secondary issues don't rear their ugly heads until the main issue of gluten has been...
  25. Hershey's don't have any no-no ingredients listed, and they are one of the companies that always lists . . . I think they are, anyway
