ARCHIVED Substitute For Condensed Tomato Soup
GFBetsy replied to pmccall4495's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
gfp - You once posted the ingredients list from a spaghetti sauce can (or something similar). My question is: Do the ingredients lists in Europe always list the percentage composition? Labels in the US don't, which is why I ask. Just curious ! -
So true!

ARCHIVED Rice Krispie Treats
GFBetsy replied to Kibbie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Here's a great recipe: Cocoa coconut Crispy Treats 40 marshmallows 1/4 c. butter or margarine 6 c. Post Cocoa Pebbles (gluten-free as of today . . . though things change sometimes) 1/2 c. (or more) flaked coconut Melt and stir marshmallows and margarine over medium heat. When melted, remove from heat. Stir in coconut and cocoa pebbles. Press... -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed
GFBetsy replied to JuliaE's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Dont' have a lot of answers to those questions, but wanted to say Welcome! There are lots of threads about vegetarianism on the board . .. perhaps they might have some of the information you're looking for! Best Wishes! -
The mix lonewolf posted (a modification of Hagman's gluten-free mix, right?) is also a good one - just a little bit grittier becuase of the greater amount of rice flour. But I do have some recipes that I have tried with both featherlight mix and the other one where the "ricier" (is that a word? ) flour mix gives a better texture. It just depends on the...

ARCHIVED Going To Costco
GFBetsy replied to ebrbetty's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
We haven't had one (that we've noticed) but if I were you I would ask the guy's in the deli area to show you a list of their ingredients (including the list on the chickens themselves (before they cook them)). (Does that make sense? I'm getting a little finger-twisted theis morning.) -
Sorry . . . I use featherlight mix so often I forget the not everyone who's gluten-free uses it. It's a flour mix recipe created by Bette Hagman. Here's the recipe: 1 c. rice flour 1 c. corn starch 1 c. tapioca starch 1 Tbs. potato FLOUR (not potato starch) I mix up 12 or 15 cups at a time and then just use it in place of "regular" flour...

ARCHIVED Does Anyone Know If Rose Art Brand Watercolor Paints Are Safe?
GFBetsy replied to Kassidy's mom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I don't know about the extra gum . . . I haven't heard anyone say it's caused problems, but not everyone "feels" symptoms as acutely, so I'm not positive. Try contacting Wrigley's (or google it). As far as the elevated TTG goes, Tissue-Trans-Glutaminase is what your body uses to try to heal your intestines. So the glutening 3 weeks ago could have been... -
Don't freak out too badly . .. it'll wear itself out. And next time you probably won't do it!

ARCHIVED Going To Costco
GFBetsy replied to ebrbetty's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Many of the mcCormick spices they carry are OK. They also (in Orem, UT, at least) carry the Envirokidz cereals. The outside box doesn't say Gluten Free, but the inside boxes do. Their frozen veggies are clean, as are the fresh ones. (Don't buy bagged spinach right now, though, because of the e-coli outbreak.) Juice, yogurt, nuts . . . the list goes on... -
Actually, a while ago I had someone tell me that using non-stick spray (like Pam) on waffle irons actually damages the non-stick finish and makes things MORE likely to stick. So I stopped using it, and I was surprised to find that they come off just as easily (after the first couple). Pre-heating the waffle baker does help, and my waffle recipe might have...

ARCHIVED Possibility Of Complete Recovery?
GFBetsy replied to myshrimpdied's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
There has been some talk about a company (Alba Therapeutics, I believe it is called) that is working on a Zonulin blocker that (so far) appears to allow people with celiac to eat gluten occasionally (kind of like lactaid, but probably much more expensive ). But they're thinking it won't be available for another 4 or 5 years. And even then, you'd probably... -
ARCHIVED All-time Favorite Gluten Free Cookbooks
GFBetsy replied to Guhlia's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
How about if I'm WORKING on a cookbook . . . ? -
Just wanted to say I'd try the dish soap alternative . . . All the commercial's for Dawn, etc. focus on how well they cut grease . . . and I recently used it to clean some stuffed animals that had been stored over kitchen cabinets and were consequently greasy and dusty. It worked very well. (I know it's not quite the same situation . .. but I should think...

ARCHIVED New Celiac
GFBetsy replied to bmzob's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Try the yeast bread and soft batch cookies recipes from www.eatingglutenfree.com. I was just telling another poster that I donated some of those cookies to a funeral luncheon last week and had people asking for the recipe afterwards. They really are very good. -
ARCHIVED New To This...several Questions
GFBetsy replied to RakkasanWife's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I think that one of the best ways to help your daughter deal with her diet is to replace some of those "gluteny" things she is missing out on with gluten free treats. I've got great pizza recipes, cookie recipes, and cake recipes that are simple and easy to make. (I admit that they aren't as simple as buying them from the store already made, but they are... -
ARCHIVED 11 Year Old Son Recently Diagnosed
GFBetsy replied to Confused in Iowa's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Just last week read an article from one of my husband's lab magazines (he's a medical technologist - runs bloodwork in the hospital). It was about whether genetic testing all people for celiac was a good idea or not. It said that most people with celiac have the DQ2 or DQ8 gene, but that there are some with a recombinant form of celiac where they get the... -
ARCHIVED Going To An Overnight Conference
GFBetsy replied to Marlene's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Apples, oranges, and bananas would all be good. You can also buy serving sized fruits/applesauce/and that are prepackaged. The last time I checked the original OBERTO jerky, it didn't have any gluten containing ingredients, and that would give you some protein (check you package, just in case, though). You could also do Peanut Butter and celery (though... -
I'm so glad! Both of those flour mixes are from Bette Hagman (who wrote the Gluten Free Gourmet cookbooks). They are the best I've tried. (Although I must admit I don't really spend much time looking for other flour mixes anymore, because these work so well.) And congratulations on the banana bread! I haven't made that in ages . . . I think it's...

Ditto. Get tested. At the very least it will relieve your mind. -
ARCHIVED Language Delay Connection?
GFBetsy replied to sore joints's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hello, and welcome! I don't think that there is yet much substantiated research on this topic. There does seem to be some anecdotal evidence that SOME children (not all, by any means) do have such problems. You could check out the "Success Stories" at Open Original Shared Link. This site specifically addresses children with Autism Spectrum Disorders... -
Has there been any thought about adding a "Frequently Asked Questions" section to the main forum page? The basic questions "What are the symptoms? What about alcohol?, etc.", could be posted there with answers from some of the more experienced members of the forum. Then just make them "non-postable" so they don't get to be 30 page rants . . . it's an idea...

Quinoa grains look like small seeds. Quinoa flakes are more like oatmeal. I've made one of my favorite cookie recipes with quinoa instead of oats . . . they worked great. Here's the recipe: Mock Oatmeal Cookies 1 c. butter flavored Crisco 1 c. brown sugar 1/2 c. white sugar 1 small pkg. vanilla pudding mix (Jello) 2 eggs 1 tsp. vanilla ...

ARCHIVED I Understand That "tailz" Has Been Banned From This Site.
GFBetsy replied to Lymetoo's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Sorry if this is hijacking, but whether or not all diseases were brought about by the fall of man doesn't matter, because we are all living in a "Post-Fall-of-Man" world . . . so now we just have to deal with it . (Just as we would have to deal with it if there were no such thing as the Fall . . . after all, in the world we live in, there ARE diseases ... -
Another thing to be aware of (especially if you've got DH) is that sometimes the "glue" they use to close incisions can have wheat in it. My cousin called to check up (after her entire abdomen broke out with a crazy rash) and she said the Dr. checked on the glue and said it had wheat in it . And that was AFTER she told him repeatedly that she had celiac...
