  1. Two that I would recommend are foodieview.com and eatyourbooks.com. Foodieview is free and searches recipes on the web. You can customize searches a number of ways on both of these websites, but what I love about eatyourbooks is that you enter a list of your cookbooks and eatyourbooks browses their indices. It has a free month-long trial and costs $25...
  2. Hi there, homemaker! For some reason, I thought that Pat's was making them. The McCormicks just happen to be down the road from us, as it turns out. I'll have to try one and report back. I'm heading to Oriental Jade tomorrow night for a retirement dinner and am wondering if you or anyone has been there. It's been since before I went gluten-free for me...
  3. I just heard and confirmed that Pat's Pizza in Orono, ME has gluten-free whoopie pies. I asked if they had them at any of the other Pat's around the state, but the person who answered the phone didn't know. Margaret
  4. Hornsby ciders are gluten free. If you click on the link that you provided you can see the statement from the company. That said, I do like Woodchucks better, FWIW, but the green-labelled ones are the green apple ones and taste the tartest (at least to me). Incidentally, they also have six flavors now: red apple, green apple, dark & dry, pear, raspberry...
  5. Just checking, we aren't talking about the corn "gluten" here, are we? There are some (older, if I remember correctly) cookbooks/foodie books that I've seen that talk about gluten in corn. It isn't the same thing. Margaret
  6. Well hi, I have had hay fever since I was a teenager and didn't figure out the gluten thing until my late 40's. My dad always had hay fever. I used OTC stuff until it got really bad in a particular work environment, so I begged my PCP to let me see an allergist, where they did the skin tests and that is what led to the whole gluten issue. I tried wheat...
  7. Noodles in Brewer does this too, come to think of it. I would ask first, just to be sure they haven't changed things. Who do you see for a doctor in Bangor, if you don't mind my asking? Margaret
  8. Oy, I had trouble with oats before going gluten free. I've been gluten free for almost 4 years now and still can't do the oats no matter how gluten free they proclaim themselves to be. It takes about nine days for my system to get back to normal, hopefully yours won't last that long. I do miss the oats, though. Feel better soon! Margaret
  9. Hi Homemaker, welcome to the board! Aroostook has given you some good restaurant advice (ooo, China Buffet has gluten-free soy sauce??) and we don't eat out a whole lot, but are partial to Thai restaurants when we do. I haven't come across one in the area that I couldn't find several things to eat and on special occasions have had some wonderful meals at...
  10. I'm a careful freezer-person, but I do horrible things to baked products, mostly because we go through them so fast that freezer burn isn't much of an issue. I say, if they're brownies or something even remotely similar, throw them in your favorite container and don't worry about it much more. I've never experienced any kind of off taste or texture on...
  11. This is very similar to what I do, but in reverse. I need to have my proteins and veggies in the morning, otherwise I get that roller-coaster ride with the blood sugar rush after the fast overnight. I'm really aware of probiotics because of some meds, but that enzymatic awareness is appreciated.
  12. I am one of those who is allergic and intolerant/celiac, I'm pretty sure, because like Crimson, was gluten light or gluten free for many years before celiac was even considered and never got completely tested. I have sky high EO's and my IgA was never tested, but while very sick, I begged my PHP to send me to an allergist and was there so quickly that I...
  13. From the looks of this thread, I think we're all doing pretty well. For cost effectiveness, I would definitely recommend going with bulk flours that you mix yourself rather than premade shells or mixes and I'm a fan of Bette Hagman's recipes, but never liked just ONE pizza recipe in gluten-filled life, either...
  14. I have been cooking Asian foods for a while and have a smattering of Vietnamese recipes in several cookbooks, but I just bought my first cookbook devoted to the subject. Sweet heaven, there's no wheat, barley or rye. Does anyone else do this? I cooked my first pho with the first onion that I grew from seed last weekend. Homegrown basil and mint, too...
  15. Grilled chicken is not safe. I don't mean just scraping off the old grill I mean restaurants/mom & pop stores/you name it that sell "grilled chicken" sometimes put gluteny stuff in there. Stuff that vendors and servers don't recognize as gluten. I've been there.
  16. I have also been diagnosed with osteopenia and have, after a couple of years decided to take Boniva. I've been a dairy consumer and active all my life, but if you have malabsorption issues, (at a certain age, I suppose) it's a bit of a no-brainer. I applaud my employer for giving me the opportunity to check it out, initially, for free.
  17. I've been wondering about this for four years now. And I feel so much better in the meantime. So, I'd say, if you want to/can afford it, go for it. I haven't gotten there yet.
  18. Yes, same here.
  19. Aw, man.... You guys gave such awesome ideas that I ended up making California rolls with everybody pitching in. We don't have TJ's, Whole Foods or Costco nearby, but we do have some good health food stores here and there. BBQ season needs to be rethunk with fall here in Maine and we eat remarkably well on the standard American diet, but I used to cook...
  20. I'm almost afraid to ask because I'll be tempted to do this more often in the future and that's not good, but every once in a while I have to cook when I don't really feel like it. And I love to cook when I do feel like it and don't want to ruin that. So what's everybody's favorite dinner that involves little more than opening this or that? I can think...
  21. I agree with JillianLindsay, but it could just be the lettuce. I have issues with it, not sure if it's an allergy or if I just go into fiber overload with it or what, but sometimes it gives me trouble. Generally it's easier on your stomach to have lightly cooked veggies and fruits, so it might be a good idea to forgo the raw salads for a while until you...
  22. Oh, you poor thing. Yes, of course it grows back once you get everything back in balance. It didn't take terribly long, either and mine came back curly. I haven't been officially diagnosed with celiac, but have had most of the "classic" symptoms which include hair loss and iron deficiency anemia among them. My doc also ordered a colonoscopy as that can...
  23. I'm good thanks, but you really make me want to try my phyllo dough recipe gluten-free! Margaret P.S. I also think you're a saint, maybe a slightly twacked saint, but saintly nonetheless.
  24. Hi Kaki, There is a support group in Bangor that's really good, I'm wondering if there's a place in central Maine that's 2+ hours away from Bangor, or if you are just unaware of the Bangor group? Hope things mellow out with your bf, it sounds like you want things to work out and are doing the right thing. Margaret
