  1. I love Mary's Gone crackers! I love, love, love them. I hadn't heard about them here, either, but saw them in a co-op when I was doing a small road trip. I didn't like the first one, but was hungry and had a righteous block of cheese. I almost finished the whole box that day. I don't particularly care for the herb ones - they taste a little too, I dunno...
  2. It makes sense to me. I think a lot of people are in a strange place when they are doing the food journal thing, at least I was. I have multiple allergies, too, so it was a matter of trying to make sense of the limited testing that I had to try and figure out what was okay to eat. My dietician told me to have three columns, one that was for 'bad' food...

    ARCHIVED 1 In 133

Hi, I was just thinking in the shower this morning, if 1 in 133 people are celiac, wouldn't that translate to roughly 1 in 133 doctors that are celiac? And if that were the case, wouldn't a lot of doctors be knowledgeable about it? Or at least a lot more? Are there a lot of undiagnosed doctors out there? I don't get it... Margaret
  4. Honestly, it's not bad here in central Maine. If you want to cook for yourself, especially so, but if you want to eat out, it's doable as well. Maybe it's our proximity to Canada. Mind you, we don't have a Trader Joe's or a Whole Foods up here, but our Hannaford grocery stores made the top ten of some grocery store list that I saw recently and there are...
  5. Boyfriend's wash was the first time 'round. I'm pretty sure the next box will be Cream of Rice. Margaret
  6. My nutritionist gave me a list of least allergenic foods when I went gluten-free, since I had a myriad of allergy issues. It went something like this: apples, apricots, avocados, barley, beets, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, chicken, cranberries, dates, grapes, honey, lamb, lettuce, mangoes, oats, papayas, peaches, pears, poi, raisins, rice, rye, safflower...
  7. Well, I can see both sides of the argument as having merits. But I'm a Gemini, middle-child sort-of-a-thing. I moderate the public e-forum at the University of Maine and this is tame in comparison. I'm not sure if I'm a super sensitive or not. When I get cc'd, the reaction time is about 15 minutes and the last one was a pot that contained Cream...
  8. Conversely, if you are on a medication like Xolair, which is supposed to stop all allergic reactions and you still manage to get glutened occasionally, it's probably a wheat allergy and celiac or a wheat allergy that progressed to celiac. Margaret
  9. When I was at Epcot earlier this month, I flunked the fingerprint test to get in both times. The ticket-takers let me in anyway and kept calling me 'dear'...I'm wondering now, do they get 1 out of 133 that do that and the ticket takers are just used to it? I have never had fingerprint strength and didn't know it was related. As an aside, I think Dr. D...
  10. Although if you're going to do this, my mantra is to make as little a deal of it as possible. Like ravenwoodglass said, no parent wants to be reminded that they'd fed their child 'poison' all along. I do fine when it's just with my parents, but when there's a lot of family involved, it just seems to go down the pooter quickly, even though some of the grandkids...
  11. Hi Rpm999, Doctors are like people, some are worth keeping. If you have a great immunologist in your area and can afford the cost involved, personally, I'd check them out. If they give you advice that doesn't seem right, get a second opinion. My current PHCP realizes that I have a condition that she doesn't know much about, but is willing to learn and...
  12. My experience, it took about 2 years for my family to "get it" and they are generally really supportive. For instance, at Thanksgiving a couple of weeks ago, Mom declared that she was making the green-bean casserole anyway, Dad was doing the stuffing outside of the turkey when I asked about the stuffing, my excellent sister-in-law noted the lack of the usual...
  13. A couple of weeks ago, I had my second-for-the-year of what I'm now calling Invasive Procedure Day, where I somehow get scheduled for the dentist and the ob/gyn on the same day. That will stop soon, as my ob/gyn says I'm good to go back to an annual...but anyway. I'm at the ob/gyn and my urine has a little bit of protein in it, no big problem, but we'll...
  14. I've got multiple food allergies, too, and love to cook, so I can see your dilemma. If you want to keep it simple, think grain/starch, protein, veggie. So, looking at your list, you could easily do a nice grilled tuna steak, rice and peas or spinach? Turkey, squash (there's so many choices) and asparagus. Quinoa, nuts (not peanuts or almonds) and...
  15. I think doctors have a wonderful way of not getting you to tell them all of your problems, sometimes, perhaps subconsciously. Not mentioning everything with me that isn't going exactly right is one of my pet peeves about myself and I don't even mind when they look at me like I'm crazy. We seem more able to talk about the ears, nose and throat than other...
  16. I'm going through the same thing with the things getting piled on. It's great that you have a friend who's willing to help you out. Remember, it may not be anything terribly serious. (I have been on too many poop websites). But it's good to get things checked out. Hope you get to feeling better soon! Margaret
  17. Peaked at 5'10", now 5'8", but I had all of the more classic symptoms of celiac at 45 or so. LOVE the picture, btw, Joyous.
  18. Neil Young has got to be a celiac, seriously... "One of these days, and it won't be long." Margaret
  19. How do you handle the social aspect of things, such as they are? Same, here!
  20. I am secretly furious at him for not knowing after almost 2 1/2 years to wash his hands thoroughly after eating that poison before he comes home and touching everything else. Could it be that he's unintentionally glutening you by kissing you after being around all that gluteny badness? It's hard to remember silly things like doing the Hollywood mooch...
  21. Hi all, This was my third attempt at a gluten-free Thanksgiving away from home and the first time that I've been glutened. My family is wonderful and even though the dressing was cooked away from the turkey, the gravy was made from my "special" flour, my gluten-free foods were gobbled up and gluten-free at our house tasted more like dessert, what with...
  22. I am home baking pies and such for the holiday. Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? is on in the background and the question that Meredith had for the contestant with an M.D. for $25,000 was something like this: Because of potential intestinal damage, people with celiac disease cannot eat this: a. poached eggs b. rice c. wheat bread d. steak tartare He...

    ARCHIVED Naturopath/homeopath

No offence taken, Adrian, I just disagree on some points with you. Homeopathy has an effect on my radial tunnel syndrome that is not a placebo effect. When I take the remedy, my condition exacerbates for a few days and then calms down. I was on another course of homeopathic treatment before my current remedy and it did nothing towards healing, so the suggestion...
  24. Shan, Breakfast is one of those challenging meals for me, as I have trouble with the sugary aspect of things early in the morning. I tend to crash and burn after that. I also ascribe to the theory of eating like a king in the morning, a prince at noon and a pauper at night. One of my favorite meals for breakfast is soup - it's warming, soothing and...

    ARCHIVED Naturopath/homeopath

Hi Adrian, I certainly wouldn't want to take away your right to be disturbed by whatever you wish. However, I am a strong believer in the medical arts and as such, embrace alternative medicine when it seems appropriate. I would not seek a homeopath for a heart condition, celiac or anything else that might prove fatal - I do have enough faith in current...
