  1. I just want to let you know that aside from helping him find food he can eat (which is really important ) you are doing the best thing for your Celiac partner by being supportive. The healing process is rough, as is giving up over half of your old diet in some cases, but having someone to help you out makes the process tolerable. I'm blessed with an understanding...
  2. Celiac and Sjogren syndrome are related because they both involve the body hurting itself (autoimmune diseases), but I think they are both considered independent diseases. At least I've never heard of one being caused by the other, but many people with one autoimmune disease will have another autoimmune disease as well. You unfortunately have both. gfb...
  3. Find a good "all-purpose" gluten free cookbook--like the Gluten Free Gourmet line. I usually can find a fairly good selection at the larger chain bookstores. All of these cookbooks tend to have at least the first quarter of the book dedicated to helping cooks understand what it means to be gluten free, what foods to avoid, even some of the biology behind...
  4. In the strictest medical terms, small bowel biopsy is the "gold standard" for a diagnosis of Celiac disease--which basically means that this is the best test we have currently, and the medical field IN GENERAL will not recognize the diagnosis without a positive biopsy. Of course, some people who really do have Celiac Disease can have a negative biopsy depending...
  5. It stinks to be the only one who is "eating funny," but the more people you can educate about this disease, the better it will be. And with 1 in 133 people having Celiac Disease, you might actually help someone get the diagnosis they need!
  6. My cousin is not diagnosed celiac but has suspected gluten sensitivities and a son with mild failure to thrive. She gets panic attacks when she eats... I think there is a good likelihood the gluten could be related.
  7. My paternal grandfather is diagnosed, and I am diagnosed, but my dad's blood tests are negative. The genetic link isn't really well understood, and there definitely is an environmental trigger that is also not well understood. The current thinking is shifting to think of gluten sensitivities on a spectrum (sort of like autism) with some people having a sensitivity...
  8. I've had good luck at Mimi's Cafe (they have a gluten-free menu), but I'm not sure how wide-spread they are. PF Changs is amazing. Carino's has a gluten-free menu online, and I've had pretty good luck. I just tell people "wheat allergy." They tend to be more careful when they think I"m going to drop dead of suffocation in front of them.
  9. I'm in Cabot.
  10. My now-husband and I had been dating only a few months when I was first diagnosed, so I can understand the change that you and he are going through. I agree that you need to talk to him about how hard it is for you to make this transition without more of his support, and if he isn't willing to be more helpful afterwards, you know it's time to cut him loose...
  11. As a medical student with Celiac disease, I think the best thing you can do is get them to think about what they would do for lunch when they go to grand rounds or conferences--sandwiches, tortilla wraps, gourmet cookies--and none of them gluten-free! I've found that once they understand the life impact, they become much more interested in the pathology...
  12. Egg noodles. I miss egg noodles for beef stroganoff. Rice just doen't cut it.
  13. Instead of seeing it as a swarming, you could see it as an opportunity to educate more people about what Celiac REALLY is. The same thing happens to me constantly--and letting my colleagues know that I'm ok with their asking questions has paid off. Another women in my class has been recently diagnosed, and she knew that she could ask me for help. We spent...
  14. just make sure that you are on a good gluten-free calcium supplement with Vitamin D if you cut out the dairy. don't want bone problems on top of everything else.
  15. If you are not having the big D, crohn and ulcerative colitis are way down on the list of possibilities. rectal bleeding can be from hemorrhoids--especially if you've been having constipation and straining. you may want to check out your thyroid function, or you could just have a bug to explain the fatigue and chills. I think many of us are really sensitive...
  16. I had mondo lactose intolerance while I was recovering. For me, it got progressively better, but I still can't eat a big bowl of ice cream without thinking twice. If you think about it, it makes sense that lactose intolerance and celiac disease goes together--lactase (the enzyme that breaks down lactose) is made and works at the villus lining of the intestines...
  17. Whole Foods makes some pre-made cheese biscuits that are REALLY good and very comparable to Red Lobster biscuits. You can find them in the freezer section. Cheese biscuits were one of my favorites as well. As for eating seafood, Bonefish Grille (a chain restaurant) has an actual gluten-free menu and could be an option for you if one is in your area. I haven...
  18. I'm a first year med student with Celiac Disease, and I have a first-hand experience with the ignorance of some doctors concerning all things Celiac--which got me thinking... I'm in class with approximately 150 future doctors, so why not educate them. At some point, ideally in the next semester, I want to coordinate with our local Celiac support group to...
  19. I, too, was diagnosed with endometriosis after a ovarian cyst removal surgery. The doc cauterized all that he saw, and I never had any issues with extreme menstrual pain, etc., so I have no idea if going gluten-free has helped.
  20. i itch from about 2 seconds after the bite until 2 or more days later. i don't scar, but the bites raise up and harden usually. it's horrible.
  21. i don't retain information. i can't stay focused. i feel like i'm walking around half-asleep. i find it hard to get excited about things. it's like a very mild depression-type mood.
  22. my chicken pox put me in the ICU when i was 4. if it's not too prying, why did you not have the kids vaccinated against chicken pox? i'm almost positive it's one of the required vaccines now--like the MMR.
  23. send your husband to the shower, and you can go hang out with your best friend. then you don't have to deal with the ML, but she can still have the party.
  24. but the viral/bacterial angle is interesting...
  25. as far as i can remember, my major symptoms started around the same time i began having migraine headaches (approximately age 10) and was allergy tested (with no food allergies). the allergy doc put me on a "headache diet" that basically took out everything BUT gluten foods, and i failed my first math paper and had a lot of emotional breakdowns--then my...
