  1. so, i had my med school interview yesterday, and they asked me the one question i didn't think to prepare for: what 3 living people would you invite to dinner? i completely blanked. it's like the name of every person i had ever known about flew out of my head. so i finally came up with president bush, to see what he's really like, and osama bin laden...
  2. on a side note: pyridium, a painkiller usually given for UTIs, will turn your pee orange and stain if you don't "sanitize" well. it's an interesting experience.
  3. the nat king cole version of "the Christmas song." it's an essential. chestnuts roasting, and all that jazz...

coke is ok. (and i believe pepsico says all of their carbonated drinks are gluten-free.) oatmeal is all right as long as it's made from gluten free oats (so quaker doesn't count). and canned kidney beans that don't have any extra little goodies (like natural flavors) should be ok. hope that helps.
  5. God bless you for doing this--and so close to the holidays, too.
  6. i don't always react right away. sometimes i'll have tummy trouble one or two days after i've glutened myself. and there are some foods that don't cause me to react quite as quickly as others.
  7. i just had my first, too. roasted cornish game hen gluten-free cornbread stuffing pumpkin/cream cheese pie i was happy. and full.
  8. just fyi: pubmed central has free full text articles. pubmed articles aren't always free. thanks for the info.
  9. another good gluten-free "beverage" is woodchuck cider. especially if you don't like the beer taste, which i don't. even the boyfriend (aka miller lite man) likes it. i can get it at the liquor store here in arkansas, so i think it shouldn't be too hard to come by.
  10. my mouth has been full of cold sores since i went gluten free. in fact, the sides of my mouth and tongue are super sensitive, too. i recently took antibiotics for strep throat which seemed to help, but i get a new cold sore on the inside of my lip usually every two days or so.
  11. i told my otherwise wonderful gi doctor about my brain fog and mild depression, and he said that celiac wouldn't have anything to do with that... and my new family practice doctor hasn't had to deal with it yet, though i had a funny dermatitis of some sort, and the one associated with celiac disease never entered the conversation.
  12. i, too, date a full-time gluten eater, and although we don't live together, I have my own cabinet in his kitchen, and he has "acquired" some new cookware since i was diagnosed. yeah, it's hard when he's diving elbow deep into a large cheesy pizza, but i am determined not to guilt him into gluten free--and it works! he tries everything i make and usually...
  13. i had one finger that would go numb for no apparent reason, but it hasn't happened since i have been gluten free. don't know that i can attribute it to full blown neuropathy, but it might be the beginning stages.

    ARCHIVED "the Trigger"

i was beginning to lose weight noticeably due to minor villus blunting, but a rough patch with the boyfriend sent it over the edge. i was down to 110 (from 125 normally) at my lowest---and i'm six feet tall. thankfully, we're still together, but it's interesting to think that i might not have been diagnosed at this point if it weren't for our temporary...
  15. I'm not on the raw foods diet, but I love larabars... totally raw, no processing, quite yummy. pricey, though. my favorite is the apple pie variety.
  16. i'm desperately in need of a restaurant list. thanks for making it available. hcdelahunt@yahoo.com
  17. i totally did the same thing without the change in bath soap! i got little spots on my belly and large rash-like spots on my extreme lower back. they were mildly itchy. the doctor said they are some sort of dermatitis, but he wasn't specific. i have no clue.
  18. oreo commercials make me cry--and driving past my favorite Italian restaurant. when i get down, i try to console myself with one of my favorite "normal" foods. for instance, the watermelon in your pic. hope things get better. and you are not weird--all of us have our own timing in the grieving process.
  19. a friend sent me a reportedly yummy pie crust mix, but i need to roll it in tapioca starch. i've looked in health food stores--and in the mainstream ones, too--and i can't find it. any ideas?--is online my only option, or is there a suitable substitute?
  20. watch out for the new year's kiss!!! miller-lite kisses make me symptomatic within minutes. sure does take the fun out of a saturday night.
  21. i reintroduced after 5 months--and slowly. but i notice that any time i'm glutened or have a stomach virus, etc, milk products absolutely tear me up. so beware. also, i found that cheeses had the mildest effect, so i hope you can enjoy your cheddar soon.
  22. thanks. i'll check into it.

    ARCHIVED English Check?

i find it refreshing that you care enough to get a proofreader. and i love the british spellings. my personal favorite is "oestrogen." not that you mentioned it in your response.
  24. i notice that alot of you advanced community people know what specific genetic "defect" you have that contributes to your celiac disease. how did you find out, and did your insurance pick it up? i'm a classically diagnosed celiac, but i want to know which alleles i have and what that can mean if i want to have kids.
  25. depending on how bad your condition is, it may take months before the fatigue lifts. i still have bad days, and i'm almost 8 months gluten-free. also, if you are in early pregnancy, fatigue is going to be a part of life. sorry you are having such a hard time. but don't starve yourself. take care of you and baby. congrats!
