Getting to know patients and looking over a chart before going in a room would be great and i try to let my patients know that i truly care about their concerns, even if i don't have an answer... but this takes time, and when you start running late, patients get angry quickly. i have completed 2 months of clinic work, and the number one complaint i get when...

You absolutely have the right to refuse a biopsy, but i don't think he can give you the "official" diagnosis without a positve gold standard test, especially if you aren't very symptomatic. also, i had an endoscopy and colonoscopy after my positive blood test, and the GI doc found a pre-cancerous polyp--probably saved my life since no one looks for colon...

ARCHIVED Prenatal Vitamins And Diarrhea
heathen replied to frogrun's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I've been on nature made prenatal vitamins for 8 months with no issues. if anything, the iron usually constipates rather than causes diarrhea. if it doesn't clear up or gets worse, you may want to talk to your doctor to make sure nothing else is going on. -
ARCHIVED Talking To University Department
heathen replied to Googles's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I deal with a similar situation at my university as well. I pay a substantial amount in class dues that pays for stuff i can't have, and while the powers-that-be try to make concessions for me as they can, i'm only one person among several non-celiac students. personally, i've decided to let it go and bring my own food. i have bigger things to worry about... -
Chebe is definitely not like regular bread. I use the pre-made frozen dinner rolls to make mini-pizzas with gluten-free spaghetti sauce and cheese. They do tend to get crunchy on the outside and stick to the pan, so i flip them half way through the cooking time. If chewy texture is not for you, chebe is definitely not for you!

ARCHIVED Wal-mart Brand's "gluten Free" Labeling
heathen replied to no-more-muffins's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I haven't had a problem, either. I think it's wonderful that a big chain store is becoming more aware of our dietary needs. -
ARCHIVED My Husband Is A Celiac - I Am Not - gluten-free For The Baby?
heathen replied to Celiac's Wifey's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I'm fairly certain you can eat whatever you want. You might actually want to give your new little one gluten early on. There is a theory that if you expose the kids early, you may "prime" the immune system to not freak out on gluten later on. -
ARCHIVED Steatorrhea
heathen replied to jasonD2's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Steatorrhea can occur any time you aren't absorbing fat. In fact this is how Alli (orlistat) causes weight loss. It can also be caused when you have pancreas problems, etc. But it is a classic symptom of Celiac Disease. -
Quick update: I'm now a third year student, and thanks to several staff members at my school actually having Celiac, we've gotten a pretty good education on it--not to mention, I and another classmate have Celiac. The good news is that most of my colleagues are interested in hearing my story and other stories of people who were overlooked or misdiagnosed...

I react to Wendy's frosties because of my lactose intolerance--so I order the Junior frosty. Not only is it a very small portion that is cool and chocolatey, but it is also cheaper and doesn't aggravate the lactose intolerance. however, I would stear clear of the shakes--too much risk of contamination.

ARCHIVED Anyone With An Eating Disorder?
heathen replied to eddieisagirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think for those of us who have been really thin all of our lives (or not sometimes) and since we have to pay such close attention to our food, the prospect of gaining weight or not being able to control what we eat is akin to losing part of our identities. I know that I have struggled with those thoughts myself, the incessant "What if I'm not the 'thin... -
ARCHIVED Glutened From Kissing?
heathen replied to ilikechaitea04's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My best advice--wait till the next morning... Yes, it takes the romance out of the evening, but you won't feel bad the next day. -
ARCHIVED Villi Damage From Other Food Intolerances?
heathen replied to megsylvan2's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
While not a food intolerance, there are some viruses that can take out villi just like Celiac Disease, but the healing time is much quicker once the immune system kills the virus. The biopsies look almost identical. -
ARCHIVED Need Opinions: Living On Campus Vs Living At Home
heathen replied to Ashley's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Learn from my experience: I have a wonderful relationship with my parents, but due to financial constraints, I had to move in with them while working on my 2nd degree. BUT if you decide to live at home, get EVERYTHING in writing! By this, I mean have a long talk with your parents and write out a "Bill of Rights" concerning everything from what they expect... -
ARCHIVED Can You Have Celiac With Normal B-12?
heathen replied to mindyandy420's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
B12 is mostly absorbed in the bottom third of the small intestine, so depending on the location of most of the damage (which is generally in the top half of the small intestine), you can totally have a normal B12. Make sure you keep tabs on your folate (folic acid) level, too. Both B12 and folate do similar things, but low folate can cause birth defects... -
ARCHIVED Boston's Gourmet Pizza - Mckinney, Tx
heathen replied to ohsotired's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I'm going to try the one in Little Rock this Friday... I'm SO excited to actually order a pizza from a restaurant!!!! -
It's a good idea for most women to start calcium supplementation before age 30 to prevent osteoporosis even without Celiac disease. But if you have diagnosed osteoporosis, you need to definitely be doing that. Split around 1200 mg (eg. one 600 mg in the morning and one at night) and don't forget to take a Vit D supplement as well (many over the counter...

ARCHIVED Foods To Make Me Gain Weight
heathen replied to valeriek's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I too am underweight (just under 6', 125-ish), but I feel good and am not losing, so I'm not going to worry about a number. Instead of fatty or carb-rich foods (which can give you other problems), I help maintain weight by drinking ensure PLUS (not the same as regular ensure). It has no gluten or lactose--which is good especially if you are still healing... -

ARCHIVED Ridiculous Comments From Doctors Heard During Search For Diagnosis
heathen replied to Sierra's Mommy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
First, I'm not excusing these doctors for not keeping up with the current research on Celiac Disease--especially the GI docs--but you have to realize that up until the last 10 years or so, medical students were taught that Celiac Disease was a rare GI only disorder that occurred in Irish, English, or Scottish kids with failure to thrive. But they should never... -
ARCHIVED Babies With Celiac
heathen replied to daphniela's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
depending on how old your son is, his immune system may or may not be mature enough to mount an antibody response. If he is less than 6 months old, he is still using antibodies that he got from you (pretty cool, huh) while his immune system is warming up. If you are really concerned that gluten may be causing your child some problems, you can use other... -
I hate to do this to you, but in the interest of full disclosure... I have a friend who got pregnant with an IUD (doesn't everybody have a "friend"), and I've seen an actual Xray of a pregnant woman with an IUD--good times. Like all birth control, there's that pesky 1% that sneak through. So double up on the birth control (ie use condoms, spermicide, etc...

ARCHIVED Family In Denial
heathen replied to Gobbie's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
since things like Celiac Disease and food intolerances tend to run in families, they may not want to hear what you have to say because they know it means that they will have to change their lifestyles if they accept it. Not everyone is strong enough or even willing to do what it takes to keep themselves healthy--hence we have the obesity and diabetes epidemics...
