ARCHIVED 1.5 Wks Of Depression From Gluten?
heathen replied to LittleZoe's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
when i'm glutened, i lose at least 2 days of productivity from the fatigue. and i was mildly depressed right before i was diagnosed. personally, i think it's one way the body can keep us from expending energy that we aren't getting from our food. it makes sense--no nutrition, no need to get up or do anything. -
i get lower back pain, hip pain, and neck pain. it's no good.

ARCHIVED Abs Redbridge Beer
heathen replied to johnm's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
i've never been a big beer drinker, but it tasted like beer to me. my non-celiac boyfriend says it has a weird aftertaste--definitely a beer you drink with a meal and not on its own. i didn't have a reaction to it--and just a trace of barley sends me to the bathroom. -
ARCHIVED Brain-fog
heathen replied to Moscow's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
from a strictly physiological point of view, brain processes take a while to adjust. for instance, anti-depressants take a week to a month to take effect even after they change the neurotransmitter concentrations. i had major brain fog as well. it took about 3-6 months of gluten-free eating to clear it--and i know that it comes back with a vengeance when... -
yes, she's not much better. but at least she has the pretense of intelligence. jessica simpson is a joke.

ARCHIVED Whole Foods To Buy Wild Oats
heathen replied to Phyllis28's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
just heard that on the evening news. wild oats is one of my major food sources... is whole foods just as good at providing gluten-free foods? -
yes, but what hasselbeck lacks in fame, miss simpson lacks in... sense, shall we say. if she becomes an informed patient, great. if she doesn't, she could actually hurt more than help.

ARCHIVED Poll: Were You Or Your Children Breast-fed?
heathen replied to Mtndog's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
i was breastfed for 8 months--and i was a fat baby. i'm convinced it shielded my celiac symptoms for years. -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Else Get Dh At Base Of "crack"
heathen replied to capecodda's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
yes, i thought it was shingles. it drives me nuts. and it's so unattractive. ironically, it didn't start until after i went gluten-free. -
Tide's bothered me since childhood. There's something in it that drives my skin crazy. We recently switched to free and clear detergent, and it seems to work well.

ARCHIVED Feeling A Little Bit Sad
heathen replied to runnerjen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
i broke down at a fast food drive-in and during an oreo commercial. it does get better, i promise. -
ARCHIVED I'm Going To Med School!
heathen replied to heathen's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
it's an integrated curriculum. in the first year, i'll take biochem and cell first. then gross, histology, neuro 1, physician care, and something else i can't remember. then the "specialties" are bunched together in a year. so two years of class, and two years of clinical rotations. my friends have told me that if i can make it through second semester freshman... -
ARCHIVED I'm Going To Med School!
heathen replied to heathen's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
i'm going to the university of Arkansas for medical sciences in little rock. i know, Arkansas... how good can it be? but it's actually a really good med school, even if it's not "prestigious." and i do think that having celiac will make me a better doctor--definitely more sympathetic. -
so i got my acceptance letter to med school today, and beyond being excited and nervous, i can be an insider for you guys... so what do you want to know? it may take a few years to get through them all, but i'll try.

on thursday, i will have been diagnosed for a full year (time flies, right?), and i want this year to be different from the "will i ever be able to eat again" fest that i had last year. i feel better, i made it through the holidays, i found frozen chebe bread, i baked my first gluten free pumpkin pie--these are all things to celebrate! so what do you crazy...
-
i love that you refer to them as cokes... a little off subject, but where do you live? do you know about the GIG group in Little Rock?
-
thanks. i get the drinks, but i'm quite wary about the food. in fact, i'm enjoying my cherry limeade slush right now. yum.
-
does anyone know about gluten-free friendly foods at sonic drive-ins? i know this ia a predominantly southern chain, but i really like their drinks and would like not to be ill. thanks.

ARCHIVED Any College Students Out There?
heathen replied to Sillyyakdidi's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
hey, i'm 25, and in college still... i commute, so i pack my lunch. i tend to go with a lot of fruit--applesauce, mandarin oranges, and those little raisin boxes. my sandwich substitute is usually gluten-free lunch meat wraps with sliced cheese or cream cheese. and you can get that stuff relatively cheap. when my friends go out for pizza, i usually run... -
holy cow!!! my dentist thought it was just the acid reflux... i knew there had to be more to it. one side of my molars is almost completely gone at the top. is there any way to reverse it? or do you just have to cap it? and did anyone else have discoloration?

ARCHIVED Eczema/psoriasis
heathen replied to Mike44's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
i, too, am a lifelong eczema sufferer, and although it has improved since i've gone gluten free, i still break out due to other allergies (like tree pollen season) and alot of handwashing without lotioning afterwards. i don't know about psoriasis, but i believe that eczema breakouts are mainly related to some sort of allergic reaction whether to food or... -

ARCHIVED Dumb People Suck
heathen replied to vampella's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
A couple of things i forgot. Warn them about inhaled glutening--like if they are making cupcakes in the room. that one got me last summer. and make sure they know not to share her playdoh. Also, really emphasize the need to keep her stuff apart from the others. for instance, have her put her soap in her cubby after every use. Of course stuff like that... -
ARCHIVED Dumb People Suck
heathen replied to vampella's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
ok. i work in child care, and i have celiac disease, so i can totally sympathize with your struggles. The typical preschool diet is based on wheat, and there have been a few occasions when i've been accidentally glutened at work. however, i have a few suggestions for you to help your next preschool experience be a better one. i'm sure you've done most... -
ARCHIVED Celiac And Chicken Pox
heathen replied to FeedIndy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
you may not want to soak them in non-gluten-free oatmeal. sounds gross i know, but i took many oatmeal baths when i had chicken pox. of course, that was over 20 years ago when i didn't know what celiac was.
