  1. Boston celiac, did you know that coeliac seems to be prolific in Italy. So you could have a double inheritance. Catherine
  2. If this was not a gluten free forum, I would've suggested eating your crusts. That's what my dad would say when I left my crusts behind. Apparently eating crusts gives you curly hair! Catherine
  3. Betsy, I so agree with what you have written. I was told once, to make a list of all the things I can eat. Beleive me, it was not a short list either. I think we have to concentrate on the positives of the diet and not the negatives. Having something that I can just grab and eat, whether it is fruit, vegetables or something a bit naughty works a treat...
  4. Mango, I know what a mango is, and I know what a tiki is, but is it the same tiki as in a New Zealand souvenir? Catherine
  5. I don't know if you know what a caramel slice is, but it is so yummy and decadent. Real happy tasty feeling. The Coq and Pullet Deli's Gluten free Caramel Slice, Timaru Base 75g butter 1/2 cup sugar 1 large egg 1tsp vanilla essence 1 cup gluten-free flour 1tsp gluten-free baking powder Caramel 1/2 cup sugar 2 tbsps golden syrup (a bit like treacle...
  6. You grow them tall too. But I am probably just as good. Me being 5 foot 3, I have three sons, spot on 6 feet, and one son, the oldest (poor boy), just 5.7, but then his wife is even shorter than me, and barely makes 5 feet (she is Veitnamese, so being coeliac is probably unlikely in her case.) Just looking at all the info, we don't appear to be a very...
  7. It just goes to show that we are all different. I come from a family where our stomachs have been described as being as tough as cast iron. I have definately broken that myth, but I think I am the only one who owned up to possibly having something wrong, the rest are still like ostriches with heads in sand. So it has been hard for me to come to grips with...
  8. From what I gather guar gum is from a legume, does that help in making the choice? Catherine
  9. I wish I was that as well, whereas I am the shortest in the family, but smallest, far from it. Catherine
  10. Ditto, I seem to be the same where I cannot tolerate legumes anymore since going gluten free. I just had to give peanuts a go the other day, and now I so wish I had not tried them. Is it because legumes are so hard to digest? I would never have thought carrots would be a problem, I eat them by the bucket full. Still not gone orange yet! Catherine
  11. I have heard that coeliacs are usually shorter in stature. I am just wondering how true this is, or is it just a myth? Firstly I am 1.6metres, that is 5' 3". So I am a little height challenged. I have one shorter son and he is the oldest and is 5'7". The other three sons are well on their way to 6 feet tall, or are already there. None of my children...
  12. Just found this part of the discussion. I am not 100% Croatian, but my maternal grandparents were from Korcula, presumably they were 100%, and found there way to New Zealand in the early 1900's. My father is from English descent, third generation, not too sure of Irish, but definately English. Catherine
  13. Breakfast for me is home made yoghurt with fresh fruit, canned or stewed. Sometimes I would have cereal, leftovers occassionally, and maybe toast. Lunch. All sorts of salads, rice, potato, or lettuce with canned tuna or salmon, or left overs from tea, corn crackers or rice crackers. Fruit Tea is meat and vegetables like before, just minus the sausages...
  14. Adelle, I did not think or even consider it an option for my husband to be gluten free. But I do respect the stance you are taking, but honestly I don't know how to make it easier for him My husband would've gone gluten free to support me, but why should he if he does not have to? On top of that and this fact dictates more than the rest, it would...
  15. And if I do a plain vegetable stir fry for our tea, I put some aside for the next day and I add cooked rice noodles to it for my lunch the next day. Yum. You can also pre soak the rice wraps until soft, and wrap them around cooked mince etc. and then cook in the oven, just like a pie. They tend to stick a bit, so nonstick cookware is a must. Spray with...
  16. After my first normal poop, I came out of that loo singing "It's the real thing". I'm showing my age here, it is an old cocacola song sang by the New Seekers, probably around the 70's. I guess I should've been a little bit more hip and sang "I'm so excited", which I was, so maybe that song the next time. Cathy
  17. Beans and peas along with lentils and split peas, peanuts and chick peas, as well as soy are legumes. Plus probably many more. Cathy
  18. Rinne, now I feel terrible. I surely know how it feels when a theory has bitten the dust, and there have been many of mine gone by the wayside over the last eight months. Maybe, I could always pretend that I am underweight. Maybe I really am underweight! Just wishful thinking. Cathy
  19. Interesting thought Rinne. But I am here to prove it wrong. I am overweight, not excessively, but probably bordering obese according to my bmi. I have always had D. So sorry about your theory. Last time I remember being constipated would be about 20 years ago. No I have not had D for 20 years, but normal until probably a few years back. It just got...
  20. Hello Maurice, To start with the the mfd was my bible. It was good, but I think it has it's faults. Not everything in there agrees with me, but that is probably just me. But it was good while I was adjusting. On top of that, there are a lot of foods not mentioned in it, so really I still have to read labels and get to know what things are. But I hardly...
  21. This forum has helped by letting me know that I am not the only one in the world with coeliac. It has given me the permission to do what I need to do to get better. So when people look at me strangley (like when I bring my own coffee to work), as if I am a little quirky, it does not bother me so much, as I know I am doing it in my best interests, even...
  22. Tee, Thank you for clearing that up. All I was trying to do was point out the irony of the situation on Saturday night, it was funny and I agree quite serious. Okay, I had had a couple of wines, and I guess, I should not be in charge of a computer at times like that. Cath
  23. My mum can never remember whether my name starts with a K or a C, so she will use both, even in the same card. So it had to be Kaycee. I just can't figure out what my mums problem is, she named me, so why or how can she get it wrong? Cath (I think that's right)
  24. I agree with that Ursula The positive thing for me being gluten free, is that I am recovering, but the biggest thing, (as I did not think I was that ill) is that it has given me a good look at health and food issues. Being coeliac has given me the biggest gift, and that is the chance to look at what I eat in depth, and fix up the deficiencies in my previous...
  25. Robbin, Maybe gfp is taking his time in trying to figure out for us all whether grain alcohol is all right for coeliac sufferers. For me, I have the answer, if I stick to wine there are no problems. But that is not really the answer, as I have still got half a bottle of gin, and the hubby wants to use it as gear box oil! What am I to do? Nobody...
