Hi Westie, welcome to here and to New Zealand. I would like to recommend that you look up mfd.co.nz web site, which has a lists of gluten free, soy free, lactose free items and a few others. It is quite handy. Also you could look at joining the coeliac society of new zealand or visit their web site Open Original Shared Link it seems to have a few hints...

ARCHIVED Do You Get Sick Easily?
Kaycee replied to GlutenWrangler's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Before going gluten free, I would only get one decent, horrible cold or flu each year. But last year pre gluten free, was an annomolly, as I only had slight hayfever, which hardly gets me at all, but no colds or flus. This year, as we still are in winter, I have not had anything to even warrant a day off work, yet everybody around me at work have been... -
ARCHIVED Question For Those Of You With Excessive Hunger As A Symptom
Kaycee replied to e&j0304's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My first thought on this question, was, no I don't feel hungry after being glutened. But then I looked at the issue harder, true I am not immediately hungry, as I feel absolutely yuck. But then in the days following I get hungry, but food seems to taste pretty bland, and I just want something sweet and filling, and then some more. I am in this... -
ARCHIVED Australians And New Zealanders Hellooooooo :)
Kaycee replied to Aussie Peg's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Tee I know what you mean about the mcd's thing. It was my first salad for 8 months. Sometimes I just want to be able to do the eat out thing that the hubby and sons are doing, instead of sitting there looking into thin air. I thought the simpler the better, but I was wrong. That will be my last one there. Next time I will keep shopping while they eat.... -
Incredible is all I can say. It seemed like yesterday this thread started, and look how long it is now. Novel proportions! I must admit haven't read it, but I will, better soon, or else I will never get into it. Cathy

ARCHIVED Celebrities With Celiac?
Kaycee replied to lauderdalehawk44's topic in Publications & Publicity
Have not read all this thread, but knew there was the question about celebs with coeliac. Well I have just been reading a mag stating that Rachel Hunter, Danni Minogue (Kylies sister) and Geri Halliwell (ex Spice girl) have a wheat intolerance (That is how they described their conditions). Cathy -
ARCHIVED Australians And New Zealanders Hellooooooo :)
Kaycee replied to Aussie Peg's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Hello everyone Yes I got over the soy-ing. It wasn't too bad, can't remember much about it now. But it gives me a weird scent in my nose, and weird smelling poop. Just what you wanted to know. But worse, this weekend I did the gluten thing. I thought, yes I will be safe, while they have their burgers at McD's on Sat, I will have a garden salad and coffee... -
We are all different. I would love to loose a bit of weight. Are there any takers? But on the positive side, I have not gained any since going gluten free, and that makes me happy. Cathy

ARCHIVED Australians And New Zealanders Hellooooooo :)
Kaycee replied to Aussie Peg's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I've already had my share of mr mallows today. Yummy. Such a big bag, do they come smaller. Anyway, there is enuff in there to share. I won 't be mean! Sorry you glutened yourself. It must be quite reassuring for you to know that that is what the problem is. I know before I was diagnosed, I always wondered, and sometimes had to have a sammy cause, I... -
ARCHIVED Where Do I Find Recipes That Are gluten-free And Cf?
Kaycee replied to SAR99's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I can't recommend any cookbooks. All the cookbooks I buy I put aside and never use. Gluten free cookbooks seem to cost a heap, and are few and far between. What I do is read magazines, newspapers, and when I see things that I like, I make a note of them, and any changes that might be needed. You will be surprised how many main meals in the general mags... -
Ursula, what do doctors think when a coeliac patient walks into their room? No dollar signs, unless there are other complications as well. And the pharmaceutical companies probably don't need to inject money into coeliac research, as there is no medication required, as yet. Is this why the disease coeliac gets a bit lost in the medical profession, because...

ARCHIVED Australians And New Zealanders Hellooooooo :)
Kaycee replied to Aussie Peg's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
It has been a beautiful day here. One out of the box. Makes me feel good to be alive. All has gone quiet here on this thread. I don't like to put too many entries in back to back, but would like to see this thread keep going. There is a wine in the fridge chilling nicely. All dem children at school were good today, the weather makes such a difference... -
ARCHIVED Envelopes
Kaycee replied to nannyb's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ehrin, you were thinking along the same exact lines as me. What are the hygeine standards in a envelope manufacturing factory. Are they as stringent as in any factory that produces food lines? Do they have to be subjected to health department checks? I don't think so. Cathy -
ARCHIVED Envelopes
Kaycee replied to nannyb's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Well I can't be 100%. but I licked and sealed an envelope the other day, and I can tell you I was out of my tree for most of the day. I just was not fit for work. I blamed the envelope as there did not seem to be anything else to blame. But there are so many people manufacturing envelopes, probably in a lot of different countries, that there must be... -
ARCHIVED Australians And New Zealanders Hellooooooo :)
Kaycee replied to Aussie Peg's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
That is the hard bit, slowly re-introducing things. I have eliminated soy, and milk and peanuts and a couple of other things, like legumes. I have been waiting for the symptoms to settle down, but they have not. Still have a bit of D. So I am clutching at straws, and wondering what next to remove from my diet, thinking what can I remove? I have noticed... -

ARCHIVED Recovery In Older Celiac Patients
Kaycee replied to Helena's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I am older, not really that old at 49, but was diagnosed 6 months ago, and I do notice a big benefit being gluten free. I have my life back, my sense of humour, and I am finding out who I am. I am more sociable, do not lock myself away as much from other people. I am not such a worry wart, wasn't so much about myself, but worried more about other people... -
ARCHIVED Australians And New Zealanders Hellooooooo :)
Kaycee replied to Aussie Peg's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Peg, your happy vibes are working for me. Went for my walk with a friend this am and I didn't even know myself. I was bubbling away, cracking funny jokes etc etc. It was dark, so maybe she didn't know who I was either. Your health vibes have done the trick too. Thank you Gluten free soy sauce, have you tried a brand called tamari organic soy sauce.... -

ARCHIVED Australians And New Zealanders Hellooooooo :)
Kaycee replied to Aussie Peg's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Peg, I forgot to mention, that caramel colouring I usually avoid too. There was some in a creamed rice tin, and it did a number on me. Labelled as gluten free etc etc. There are three ways to make caramel, i am guessing, as sometimes after 150 the number that denotes caramel in a food product, there can be and a, b, or c, or even I, II, or III. There could... -
ARCHIVED Australians And New Zealanders Hellooooooo :)
Kaycee replied to Aussie Peg's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Yes Peg, they would be marsmallow chocolate fish. And I know what it is like having a pantry full of things I can't eat. But I do tricks. If I know I can't eat something, I don't mind buying it for a for treat the kids, or hubby, and that way I am not tempted. What is there that we can eat anyway, if it is not healthy? But at times, I just need something... -
ARCHIVED Australians And New Zealanders Hellooooooo :)
Kaycee replied to Aussie Peg's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
We are to have our own coeliac expo in Christchurch with Dr Rodney Ford at the end of September. Could be the same one that was in Australia. I would love to go, but it is in the south island, and so far away. What makes it worse, is that I went down to Christchurch just 5 weeks ago, and I don't think I will be allowed to go again so soon! I wish I had... -
ARCHIVED I Hate Getting Glutened At Night
Kaycee replied to Nantzie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
When I have been glutened I get a restless night. I used to stress out about everything when I was a teenager trying to sleep. But that has improved a lot over the years. I was a worrier, I still am. But now being gluten free for 8 months, I have a very disturbed sleep, when glutened, tossing and turning. The other morning I wrote in my food diary ... -
ARCHIVED At What Age Were You Diagnosed?
Kaycee replied to fisharefriendsnotfood's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Good question, this interests me. I was dianosed with this at 48. Probably has been around for years and years, just slowly eating away at me. I can't remember being a sickly child, I was always a bit overweight. I did have episodes of diahrhoea as a child, but who doesn't. I had a bit of a nervous breakdown when very young, and had been a nervous... -
ARCHIVED Australians And New Zealanders Hellooooooo :)

Peg, I was so excited today, I found some chocolate without soy in it. It is so hard to find any chocolate without soy. And it was just a simple humble Cadbury flake. But yum, it lasted in my hand a minute if that.! I had to get some, the boss had told me to get a few little treat size bars to put inot the staffs cubby holes if they were tidy, a little...
