ARCHIVED Celiac Disease: Not Just A Gi Problem
Kaycee replied to Sophiekins's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This thread has been very interesting. I think I have been affected neurologically quite mildly, but I have suffered depression in the past, once when I was barely 10, and then off and on over the years. I will always remember being called dropsey, when I was young, as I kept dropping things, especially the dishes I was driving. That tendency has gone... -
I'm not sure where this belongs, but on occassions, but not often I seem to get this funny scent in my nose. It is not nasty or anything, but I just want to know what might cause it. I don't think it would be gluten, but am wondering whether it could be from soy, as I am eating a bit more of that in small amounts. Has anybody got any ideas? Cathy

Sorry to hear you have done a dumb thing, just another learning curb. I've done a dumb thing too. I think it is a denial thing, and something we feel compelled to do at some stage, just to see what happens. At times I have found myself plotting the gluten fest, but more often than not I do not do it. But the thought of it nags at me. It just about feels...

ARCHIVED I Was Thinking What If We Had A Manners Book
Kaycee replied to i canary's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If that was not so serious, I would be laughing at that comment. It has never really been a problem for me to not to accept anything. Being a bit overweight, I think people probably think I am on a diet, so it is no big deal to them. But I would like to learn some manners. A couple of months ago I was at a function where we could help ourselves.... -
ARCHIVED Had A Celiac Test While Off Wheat, Concerned Results Aren't Valid
Kaycee replied to angel42's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Angel, Welcome. Being off wheat for a week might have made a difference to the test results, as I know the antibody levels drop over time when you avoid gluten containing food. You might have to ring the doctor back and get a copy of your results to work out which result came back high. In having said that, for that week did you only avoid wheat, or... -
Here I am, nine months gluten free, and I want to eat something that makes me sick. Why would that be? It is like a craving, I have to have it, and I do know it will make me sick, but I feel I have to have it. It is not a plain sandwich I want, nor even a hamburger, or a cake or a biscuit. But I want a piece (or a bag) of licorice allsorts!...

Blueangel, I sometimes wonder the same question. But yes, I live in New Zealand and have coeliac disease. Have only known about it for nearly a year. It has been tough going, but I am getting there. Today I have been struck down by a cold, so I am feeling pretty miserable. Might just have to take tomorrow off as well. If you have any questions...

Blueangel, Welcome to this forum. As I said in your other post, Mr Mallows Marshmallows are listed as gluten free. I know I would not touch anything that has wheat starch in it. Even if it says it is gluten free. Not sure about the others marshmlallows. Where abouts are you in New Zealand? How long have you been gluten free? Catherine

ARCHIVED Help, Can I Eat...
Kaycee replied to blueangel68's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
In New Zealand I buy the Mr Mallows marshmallow, it says on the bag they are gluten free. I think New World and Pack and save have them. For sure New World has them, they are yummy, and cause no problem for me. I haven't tried any other marsmallows and probably won't. Hope you find them Catherine. -
ARCHIVED Can A Negative Result Now
Kaycee replied to Kaycee's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thank you everybody for your responses. Well I just hope my son has a little distrust for the medical community and will listen to his body when or if it shows symptoms of coeliac. It makes it a bit harder that he is overseas. I know we would all like to trust our doctors, but I've had experience where they have got it wrong for me. I agree with you... -
ARCHIVED Comfort Foods...
Kaycee replied to Compassion's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Flaked rice is like flaked rice. Being flaked it cooks quicker I don't know if you can get it in the US, but we can get it over here if you know where to look. Most supermarkets have it in their flour section. Catherine -
ARCHIVED Comfort Foods...
Kaycee replied to Compassion's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
That sounds yummy. By the way what temperature do you cook it at? it is a bit like a flaked rice recipe I make Bring 600mls (1 pint) of milk to the boil Add 1 cup flaked rice, 2tbsp sugar 1/4 tsp salt. Boil for three minutes Add 2 beaten eggs and 1/4 tsp vanilla essence. Stir. Nice for breakfast lunch and dessert. My mum used to make a rice dessert... -
ARCHIVED Can A Negative Result Now
Kaycee replied to Kaycee's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks Nikki, I thought the doctor could've had it wrong, as we are told that there has to be genetics and another trigger, like stress at some stage in your life to set of coeliac. I think the doctor thought that because all his other tests were good he had less chance as well. But I must add, that right throughout my life the only bloodtest results... -
It has been so hard and it has now been nearly a week since we lost Mintie. The boys have found it hard, even if they are big teenagers. Ryan would like another cat, but he is waiting until the time is right. We received a card from the vets and that was so nice. I cannot praise them enough for the way things were handled. Word has got around that...

ARCHIVED Can A Negative Result Now
Kaycee posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
At last my third son has been tested for coeliac, and luckily that is another negative. I am so happy for him. But there is still another son yet to be tested. Alan who is 25 was told by his doctor that his results were negative. I told Alan to be aware that if he had stomach issues in years to come, to bear in mind coeliac. What I found interesting... -
Not sure if this belongs here or not, but I'll try. Over the last few months, my husband who is not coeliac has been loosing weight. I have nearly always been heavier than him, and when I lost 2 stone I was lighter than him. But he is now loosing it and is lighter than me, which I do not appreicate. In an ideal world, he would be heavier than me. But still...

ARCHIVED Overweight Before I Was Diagnosed. Has Anyone Lost Weight Since Going Gluten Free?
Kaycee replied to jacklyn1981's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I still have not lost any weight! Gained about a lb over winter, but it seems to have gone again. But I am still the same weight as I was when I first started this diet. I'm not complaining. But, the big but is my husband has lost about a stone since my diagnosis whereas before he was putting it on slowly. So now unfortunately he weighs lighter than... -
Nikki, I know how you feel with losing your cat Felix. We are in the same boat, our lovely Mintie was put down on Monday. "He was the most placid, friendly dopey cat - marvellous with my kids." That sounds so much like Mintie, just change the He to a She. She was 15 and went downhill very suddenly, but for the last few years, we knew it wouldn...

ARCHIVED Positive Experience At Work
Kaycee replied to lonewolf's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Liz that is so nice of your job-share partner. It is wonderful to know that someone has thought about you and taken the time to find you something to eat. That sort of treatment brings a tear to my eyes. That is an even better than the deal I get, as I have to supply the morning tea as in go out and buy it. But I always make sure there is something... -
ARCHIVED Nutrition Labels/eating Out
Kaycee replied to alexschatzi's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Welcome Alexschati, Unfortunately I cannot help much with your questions, as I live on the other side of the world and we label things differently and have different food laws etc. But even so, I have found this board very helpful, and I think you have made a good choice in joining as there are so many helpfull people out there, and I am sure you will... -
ARCHIVED Labeling Question
Kaycee replied to skipper30's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It seems over here in NZ there has not been many more products claiming to be gluten free, and it just seems to be many more companies are changing their labels saying that their food is manufactured on machines that process gluten containing products. One such product was a brand of muesli bar I had been eating on and off for a while as a treat, then... -
ARCHIVED Labeling Question
Kaycee replied to skipper30's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have picked up products labelled gluten free, only to see that there is wheat is in the list, not sure if it is hydrolised wheat and all the gluten has supossedly been removed. But I know there are products out there which have wheat, but the manufacturers claim all the gluten has been removed. I for one, will not touch these products. Someone here... -
How/why The Immune System Reacts To Gluten?
Kaycee commented on mle-ii's blog entry in mle_ii's Blog
Mikey, I would not call these random ramblings! They are quite deliberate and technical. Random ramblings, for me is something that probably makes sense to me, but probably no-one else! But then if I look harder into what you are saying, then yes I probably don't understand, yet. I'm not trying to put you down, if anything I am putting... -
And I have been glutened making treats for the boys (sons) and also was glutened when cooking up a big pot of soup, which had pearl barley in it. I thought no problems there, but that was a big mistake, and the only reason I cooked it was because it was for a good cause, a fund raiser for school! The usual soup cooker was away, and we needed to keep up...

MistressIsis, Presumably you have to eat gluten to have a reaction. But bearing that in mind, my husband had a field of clover and rye, and one day we went through it to get dirt samples, so that he would know what type of fert to put on. As the rye was quite high and probably close to seeding, and I was helping by holding bags, it was quite rough and...
