  1. Jerri, I can appreciate you wondering where you got coelaic from, I do the same thing. My father was tested and that came back negative, but the doctor would not test my mother as he did not think she had any symptoms. It is not as though they do not know what it is, as my father's sister in law has coeliac. I can't say for sure, but I think it was...
  2. Nooner, you have fair taken my breath away, I am way down here on the other side of the world trying to sort out a couple of things with my diet, and you mention chocolate and bean in the same sentence, and I think, bean = legume, and I go, oh no, don't tell me the cacao bean is a legume. Then I do another take when I remember coffee comes from a bean...
  3. I have an aversion to legumes and I am a bit weary of them,, as I cannot eat peanuts, and I think soy is a no-no as well. As a rule I try to avoid all legumes, especially chick peas and lentils. But then I just had an awful thought about ten minutes ago, is the cacao(Chocolate) bean a legume, and also what of the coffee bean? Along time ago I had thought...
  4. It was only two bad christmases, the rest have been pretty wonderful. My parents did spoil us with the presents, but by the time we left school it was slim pickings. I always found it so hard to go to sleep Christmas eve, I was so excited. I remember one year trying to sleep through the two days prior to Christmas. We don't get the snow here, and our...
  5. Hi Mango, good to see you getting around Australia. The most I have done is Sydney, and I loved it. You must be going back to the states soon. And will you be having a downunder Christmas in the heat? I always think one day I will have a snowy Christmas, like on the Christmas cards, but that aint going to happen this year. But summer has not struck us...
  6. Hi Cass and welcome. I've been diagnosed nealry as long as you. So you get the 'Oh, poor you' and I get the 'oh that looks healthy' Work has been quite supportive and the only time I feel deprived would be at morning tea times if there is morning tea put on, but my muffins do make it so much easier. Welcome to the season of morning teas, and dinners...
  7. Lets get into the spirit of Christmas. I've had good, and I've had bad, but never ugly Christmases, maybe an odd Christmas. The best Christmases will always be my childhood ones where there were loads of presents food and fizzy. And relations everywhere. A real Dalmation Christmas. My oddest Christmas was about three years ago when no 4 son, at ...
  8. Jerseyangel, The only thing I can relate the feeling of people being threatened, would be when I gave up smoking and my friends didn't, they maybe felt left out in the cold that I was not sharing with them, and they tried their hardest to sabotage your efforts by saying one smoke won't make a difference. I can relate the same thing with going on a diet...
  9. Whether you like it or not, Christmas is around the corner. We call it the silly season here in New Zealand, as we all go out and do the shopping etc, and get ready for the summer holidays, it is all rush rush, and then many of us sit down on a hot Christmas Day and eat hot Christmas meals like our ancestors did in England! Then we cannot move for eating...
  10. PeaceAngel, and Angst2Amity I am sorry that your families have had to deal with caner. I think it must be everybody's worst nightmare. My family does not seem to have a history of stomach problems, as in Coeliac, so I am one of a kind with my diagnosis, or else nobody else is letting on that they have stomach problems. I know my mother does, but she...
  11. Saz, I too find that gluten free cooking for some reason or other needs more cooking time. I know some of my muffins and breads have come out a bit sticky/moist, but don't taste half bad and seem to loose the moistness as they cool down. I spoilt everyone at work the other day with gluten free muffins, and they all went, nobody could really tell the difference...
  12. Yes mmw, we all need education on how to manage coeliac disease, and like you say it is usually self-education. But that is not always the best way to learn for some. For me I have figured it out with a lot of help and support from this site. THANK YOU EVERYONE. I know I am going off topic here, but there seems to be symptoms later on in the diet...
  13. Yes and my symtoms were cyclic as in that just before and through my period they were worse. And nmw funny that you should mention the hot flashes, I was having them as well, espeically after eating bread for lunch, and being about 45 thought well that is the start of menopause, but my periods were still arriving like clockwork, so I figured it was not that...
  14. Kathy Ann, I do not know the answer, but I have had a life time of symptoms, nothing that was too disturbing, but when I think about it, they all pointed to coeliac. I always remember that I had more than my fair share of stomach bugs as a child. My nails have always been brittle, I have always had low iron levels when pregnant. It was even commented...
  15. Same with me DVK, it took years for me to find out what was wrong with me. It was me who suggested to the Doctor what the problem might be, but before that I must add, he did not even know I had a problem, as silly me did not think my bowel habits were serious enough, and partly because I was so embarassed about it. But upon going gluten free, I now realise...
  16. Welcome curious. I think you will have the determination to get there, going by your name, but the first few months is somewhat a great big learning curve. To be able to eliminate gluten as well as soy, your best bet would be to eat fresh fruit, vegetables meat, rice, fish, eggs etc. You will have to learn how to read labels, and discover where gluten...
  17. Always in my basket All the regulars, like meat, milk, veges and fruit. There is even bread, biscuits and beer! For my treat, it would be chocolate and wine. Cathy
  18. My elf name is fuzzy Mc Flurry! In actual fact life is pretty fuzzy today! Catherine
  19. Susan I have not lost the point of the question. It would be wonderful for there to be a cure, don't get me wrong, but it will not be for me. I am, well was a compulsive eater in an earlier life, and did not give two hoots about I what I was eating. I know other people can be very careful about what they eat, and be very conscientious about it, but I...
  20. Same thing happened to me too. Felt so hungry for the last few years, but more or less within a week of being gluten free, the hunger just disappeared. Hunger does not rule my life anymore. Cathy
  21. This is the stuff that dreams are made of. Since we can, or have learned how to cook again, why don't we take up the gauntlet and open up gluten free restuarants around the world. Let's start in Whangarei. Cathy

    Bergs And All

Well, I brought on the licorice, and surprise, surprise, I did not get sick. It is five days on and I did not get sick. But there have been niggly things, like more wind, grumbly stomach, bloatedness, and today I am not really thinking straight, having one of my bad thinking days. But I know I shouldn't have eaten it, and it will just make it harder...
  23. I feel like I am lurking here, hope nobody minds, but I am struck by your determinations to find answers, and the support you all have for each other. I hope you find your answers very soon, meanwhile I am learning a lot about lyme here, something I have never come across. A couple of pages back there was mention of talc causing grief possibly to someone...
  24. Good question. When first diagnosed my first thought was, wow, I don't need to take any medication. But then realisation hit and I realised, that my health is totally my responsibility, and that was a pretty heavy thing to deal with. If I get it wrong, who can I blame, nobody but myself. But now 10 months and counting, down the track I am happy with...
  25. Yes it is a great analogy, but I don't quite like the reference to salmonella, I just hate that word, and all the tummy aches associated with it, but I guess the results will be similar if we had samonella poisoning or gluten. Yes we are all nice and wonderful on here. I personally think I am a nicer person gluten free, I have had a personality change...
