  1. That's an awesome bag Stef. Wish you all the best and hope baby arrives soon. Cathy
  2. Amberleigh, I personally think it does make a difference, and I will not choose things for myself that have gluten in, even if they are cosmetics. I do not have DH, but I used to get little pimply spots in my hair. I had been gluten free for about a month and most of my little niggles, except for the D had dissappeared but I still had little sores in...
  3. JessieFree, Before I went gluten free I did get cramps on and off for years. Now that I have been gluten-free for nearly two years, the cramps are a thing of the past. I can't actually say they are gluten related, but then again, I don't gag when cleaning my teeth now, I'm not so achy, not so hungry, not so tired. Who knows what you can relate to gluten...
  4. I am worried that I may not have the right culprit because I
  5. I have found products in NZ listed as having glucose syrup derived from wheat in them, expecially sweets.
  6. Congratulations Angel, and good luck with your pregnancy. I had four sons prior to being diagnosed with coeliac. I have only known I have had coeliac for nearly 2 years. All were pretty normal births except for the third, who had a couple of problems, and I am sure a knot in his cord, and the cord around his neck didn't have anything to do with my having...
  7. Way to go, keep up the optimism. Looking at your photo Keating, you don't look big. And I love your humour. And your are so lucky being 19, what I would do to be 19 again? What would I do? Now that will be telling! I hate the word diet, and it feels like I have been on a diet nearly all my life (diets don't work) and now we are all on two diets...
  8. Hi, I'm back. Has been quite a few busy weeks, more and more work to be done, and more and more responsibility needed from me. And then my 24 year old son comes back from Australia to live with mum. Oh wonderful, full house again. I feel outnumbered, 4 men to 1 female. How will I cope? I'll be burnt to a frazzle soon. A while back I went to the...
  9. Geoff, could it be you are working too hard and getting too tired. When I'm tired I make wrong food choices, I just want something easy and quick, and that is usually fattening. It has been documetned being tired is bad for weight gain. If you get enough sleep and rest you might fare better. Just a thought as I was readying through older posts.
  10. Amberleigh, I agree with you. It has not been so bad, but I am talking nearly two years on. I remember the frustration of label reading, running out of a supermarket as I couldn't find food to eat, it all seemed to have gluten in it. Like you I went back to cooking, and that has been the key for me. It makes it cheaper and I don't have to strain my...
  11. Sounds like you are getting to the bottom of your problems. It might mean you have an allergy to wheat, and not coeliac. But then your symptoms sound so similar to mine, big D, low iron, mouth sores, tired etc etc. As long as these symptoms disappear while on a gluten free diet, then I think you are on the right track. It is how we react to the...
  12. Welcome Frances. Firstly I don't know much about storing flours, but from what I gather it can depend on where you live as in how hot or muggy it might be. In hot or muggy conditions they don't last as long in the cupboard. I can't see a problem with storing them in the fridge let alone the freezer. It might just mean a couple of extra minutes cooking...
  13. Kat I can relate to your trials, sounds quite similar to mine. About three years ago I was 196 pounds, dieted and managed to get down to 170 and it has since been two years of trying to get lower. It feels like I have been on a diet for three years, and on top of that I have had to adopt a gluten free diet as well. Going gluten free has meant, what I was...
  14. My reactions weren't immediate to start with. It used to take about two hours to know that I had ingested something I shouldn't have. But after a year and a half of being gluten free, I think my reaction time has moved to almost immediately, well withing 10 minutes, after I have eaten a meal containing gluten. It starts off with my stomach doing sumersaults...
  15. Weigh in day, it's Friday. This past Monday I weighed in at 81 kgs. Mainly because I had a problem with something I ate and I tend to bloat when I eat gluten. I'm presuming it was gluten! Today I hopped on scales and they now say 79kg, so whatever it was that I ate it has been and gone and I am back to normal. I am loosing weight, nearly back down...
  16. Hi, I was another obese coeliac, and the weight was going up and up. I just could not satisfy my hunger, so I ate, it was uncontrollable. But now being gluten free, I can curb my eating without a problem, but have I lost weight, no, not much, I think everything I eat sticks. So yes, you can be a coeliac and overweight, so if I were you I would push for...
  17. Lonewolf, I'm here, you have wound me in. I will talk in kilos, not pounds. Since about April I have lost 3 kilos, from 83 (183lbs) to 80kgs (175lbs). So I am getting there, oh so slowly, and my eating habits are much better. I think acceptance and coming to terms of being gluten free helps. For breakfast: Rice porridge with dried fruit and...
  18. This is me too. I got depressed, ever since I was young. Nothing major, occassionally for a week at a time I would be a bit weepy, but usually it was quite minor. I think it might've been there for an absolute age, but like being sick with undiagnosed coeliac you get used to it and you loose your reality of what is normal for yourself. Now that I am gluten...

    Back Again

Mosaic, what you have said is what really upsets me. Not that you have upset me, but you have put into words my greatest fears. I'm so sorry about your family friend's son. Suicide is never easy, and I do worry about my sons. I have always suffered from minor, mini depressions, on and off, and now it comes back whenever I get glutened. I find...

    Back Again

Life is crumbling. Funny how when you think things are peachy, things all of a sudden end up pear shaped. I have two sons in Sydney, Australia, they have been there for coming on 10 years. Their father, my ex husband has been a major part in their lives over there. I thought things had been fine, they have both been working, one son even managed...
  21. Have just heard that Paris has been released. We even hear about her over here. Cathy

    ARCHIVED Wow

I noticed the colour change too, but I thought it was something to do with the young guy who has just finsihed tweaking a few things on my computer! Cathy
  23. JuniperBush, I had to answer this one, as some things are similar to me. In my case, I was having problems with my stomach as in diarhoea, and had been for a long time, but I was a bit embarassed about it, so just put up with it without telling anybody. I was overweight, so I embarked on a diet, and naturally when dieting you eat more healthier and also...
  24. Go for it Donna, you can do it. In some ways your struggles remind about the battle I had with giving up smoking. It took me at least 6 years to give up finally. But I hope it does not take you that long to give up gluten. Gluten can be an addiction for some and that is why it is so hard to give it up. Sorry you have gotten a rash, but you are probably...
  25. Xiola Thanks for that information. Things for me have changed in 6 months. I know I can tolerate most legumes, and probalby never had a problem with them, it was just a case of letting my stomach settle down. I can even eat peanuts! One legume I am not sure of would be soy. As I eat mostly from scratch and food with the least additives, I don't get the...
