  1. Nantzie and Missy's Mom, I like the idea of there being advocates and educators out there working with food handlers etc. What a wonderful idea, I could just about see me filling those shoes, but I don't think I would have the PR skills. Cathy
  2. Can't make too many waffles, as ere is serious competition for them. Lucky if I get one. Today was a lovely autumn day and quite hot. Good day to walk the dog. Breakfast: Fresh fried fish. Lunch: Homemade soup with meat, 3 rice crackers, banana, fejoias and apple. Snacks: fruit of course Tea: Bean salad and soup and lefover mince from last night...

  4. Cadbury drinking chocolate is gluten free. I don't know if that is only for the NZ made variety. Cathy
  5. Hello Daniela, I am like you, and found out I had coeliac last year, and am very fast approaching 50. It is not easy to say the least and I have found this site full of support and I think it is one of the only things that has kept me going when times get tough. I will post you an email soon. Cathy
  6. Well, we are all back at work, the holidays have finished. So two days back and we have a public holiday tomorrow, you can feel sorry for me if you like. Jim asked me if I would like to get up early for the dawn parade. I should, but I don't think I will do it this year. I have been plodding on with my diet. It is going well, it is now 1 1/2 kilos...
  7. Gramcracker, I have a similar rash as to what you say. The first time I saw it I went to the pharmacist as I was worried it was ringworm, but he said no it's not and he wouldn't have a clue. But it is not itchy, just looks a bit dry and scaly and causes no problems at all. I have only had it about 3 times in the last four years, and lasts for a few weeks...
  8. Hello Melly How can you taste that left out ingredient? Lol. I usually think there is something missing. Keeping it fresh is a hard one. I think our home made breads, whether gluten free or not go harder quicker because there are no bread conditioners in them. Less preservatives. I think any type of bread will freeze. I usually slice it then freeze...

    ARCHIVED Cheating

Thanks for the thoughts. I've been thinking quite a bit about this. I don't consider myself a cheat, even though I've done it once while being gluten free. I can never bring myself to cheat in anything in life. Yes I suppose I just wanted a pretty word for it, and didn't want to be considered a cheat, or else I was relating the term to trying to lose...
  10. pnltbox27, looks to me that you have managed to upload your personal pic. Nice to see you. Cathy
  11. Natural flavourings and colourings can be made from wheat, as it is considered natural. But if it is derived from any of the major allergens etc it needs to be labelled as such. Cathy

    ARCHIVED Cheating

Someone has come up with second hand gluten to replace the term cross contamination. I think it is a wonderful suggestion and has my vote. Can anyone find an alternative to the world cheating? I hate that word, if we eat gluten we are not cheating on anyone, but ourselves. Cathy
  13. Hi Kristine and welcome. Glad you have found us. I hope your today's "aha" moment lasts, as I am sure it will, sometimes we do need a reminder (an aha moment) about what we are doing. It is a bit like looking in the mirror and not liking what is looking back at us. I wish you luck. I had an "aha" moment a few years back when I tipped the scales at...
  14. Lonewolf, yes it is so hard to loose weight. It feels like with all the trying I am doing, I am only just maintaining my weight. Grrrrrr. I'm a bit scared to try harder, but I guess maintaining is better than going up, but I am going up ever so slightly. Kumara is a sweet potato, full of calories I know, but yummy. But, I am feeling more positive...
  15. You're so right gfp couscous is wheat. Back to topic, I enjoy quinoa made into a tabouleh type salad, or any salad for that matter. You can use quinoa for breakfasts and desserts as well cooked and sweetened with fruit and yoghurt on top. Cathy
  16. Couscous is made from wheat. Cathy
  17. Green potatoes are toxic. Like Jerseyangel, if the spot is not too big, I just cut it out. Cathy
  18. It is quite commonplace to have wheat glucose syrup in confectionary here in NZ, so everytime an item just states glucose syrup, it makes me wonder, and I avoid, unless I know the source. Cathy Altoids, we don't get them here, we miss out on so much.
  19. Hello everyone I am still on track with food. Autumn I'm sorry you have all been feeling ill, hope you are all well and truley on your way to being well. Mum and I have been doing bush walks, surveying the damage from the flood from a couple of weeks back. All I can say is, there was a heap of water going through those creeks. They turned into raging...
  20. Easter is finished. Have had my share of easter eggs. Today I was good and did not succumb to the easter eggs that were selling for half price. Mum is still here, and I am being very careful what I feed her. She more or less is eating what I eat with as little additives as possible. She has discovered my corn thins and quite likes them. On Monday...
  21. Julie, isn't it so frustrating when trying to find something to drink, only to find out there is no information on the label about ingredients, well there don't appear to be here on NZ bottles. Sometimes I feel like playing Russian Rouletter, but I am too chicken to even do that. Yes in NZ it is meant to be zero gluten, and all labels must state if...
  22. Just a quick note. Holidays have started, big yay for that. Two weeks off work, but that means two weeks with my teenage children too. No rest for the wicked. I just at times hanker for a week here and there just to get things sorted out at home, with no interuptions. It never happens, one day I will have it and will probably hate it too. My mum is...
  23. Yellowbird, I had a blood test about a month after starting the gluten free diet, and the results came back positive, but not overly high. The doctor said there was no doubt in his mind that I had coeliac. I have since had two other blood tests at about 3 months and four monts gluten free and they were positive, but the antibody levels were going down....
  24. I feel for you, and I think most of us has a relation or two with symptoms who will do nothing about it, they are scared and don't want to go there. At least your husband got tested, and it was negative for coeliac, so really I guess it is his choice whether he eats his bread or not and to feel miserable with it. Unfortunately, not all test results are...
  25. I've never eaten out a lot, but I have tended to rely on shortcuts to cooking, like a packet to put with the stewing steak for the flavour, it was so easy, but now I have to start the stew from scratch, like nearly all of my meals. It is a bit like learning how to cook again, but the right way. I am a bit fearful of eating out now and only do it occassionally...
