  1. Yes ups and downs are to expected. I showed marked improvement within a couple of weeks of going gluten free, but then after that I had setbacks and it was quite hard on me emotionally. But by nine months, I was pretty much settled health wise. I do think stress does play a part in how you feel too. All of sudden I went from not being too bothered about...
  2. When your doctor says you are the second patient he has diagnosed with coeliac. (A bit reminiscent of the midwife telling me that my son was her first delivery, so I confessed he was my first baby too!) Cathy
  3. KarenDianne, Sorry you are feeling miserable. I'm not sure about eating deli chicken. I avoid eating anything from the deli as there seems to be a higher chance of getting glutened, which could be what happened to you today. I am one year in, and my diet now mainly consists of fresh fruit vegetables, plain meat and fish and hardly any processed food....
  4. Hekewhy, I thought you were playing around with Hone Heke's name, not Waiheke! Still it's a good name. Mine is just Kaycee. Go figure. We are only a couple of hundred kilometres up in Whangarei, and I am sure there are more of us in NZ. You are right when you say that it is quite a recognisable disease in kiwiland, and I haven't come...
  5. But it does matter to you, and most of understand how frustrating it is. Cathy
  6. Jen I can't say for sure that this is my spot as well. But I get them now and again, they can appear anywhere and they leave a purple mark that lasts a long time, and the actual sore does take a while to heal, it will either has puss or not. My husband calls them "one of those spots." I have thought they have been of late related to accidental gluten...
  7. Weighed myself this morning and I am 82 kilos, same as last week, same as the week before, same as........You know the pattern. Ditto ditto ditto. Had a doctors appointment today, and he is suggesting I loose weight, now that makes me laugh, I've told myself for years, I must loose weight. His reasons are because my blood pressure is getting a bit high...

    Doubting Thomas

Went to the doctors today for a general health check. I did ask him if he could be 100% positive that I had coeliac, and he had to admit that he should've done a biopsy earlier on, as when I had the biopsy done it had been a whole year since I went gluten free. But he did mention that the blood results pointed to problems with gluten. He did say I had...
  9. Pedro, you may have my number 7 on your fridge (it should be number 1), but thanks to you I have just realised what having coeliac has done for me. By addressing the problem and going gluten free it has given me a passion, and this passion is for my life. I have found life again, and I am enjoying it. Thank you for this reality check. Cathy
  10. Nikki, everybody's reaction and reaction time is/are different. I find for myself, the first hour or so is fine after ingestion, but then after that I grumpy and get horrible stomach bloatedness, and all I want to is go to bed and try and sleep, I am no good for anything. After a couple of hours that feeling goes and I tend to sleep it off. The next...
  11. Donna, I used to do a little dance when I found things that were gluten free. Yay, I can eat! I bet people thought I was crazy. I think most plain tomato sauces are gluten free, I'd watch out for barbeque and steak sauces, tomato pastes are usually concentrated tomatoes with maybe a bit of salt. But still it pays to read lables all the time. As for...
  12. Hello little d, of course you can join us. The more the merrier. I can understand where you are coming from as to regards to not being diagnosed. It would be great to have an official diagnosis, and I am sure it would make it easier for you to stick to the diet. as it is now you can never be too sure about whether it is gluten related or not. But...
  13. 1 I have a better awareness of food and particularly additives. I make informed choices. 2 I have learnt how to put myself first for a change. But I don't forget the rest, I just have a bit more respect for myself. 3 I have learnt how to cook from scratch again. I knew how to do it once before, but the skill went out the door when I discovered...
  14. 1 Having to manage my every food thought, weighing up whether it is gluten free or not. Damage control. 2 Half of my well meaning friends, family or colleagues inspecting my lunch to rule out gluten. Cross examination. 3 The disbelief from the other half of my friends, colleagues and family who can't understand why I wouldn't drink a premixed alcoholic...
  15. Thank you for bringing this up. I do get hay fever symptoms pretty soon after being glutened and a cough. Can a cough be related to an allergy? Actually I was beginning to suffer these symptoms more and more prior to diagnosis, but since being gluten free it is not a problem, unless I get glutened. I thought it was me and so totally not related to coeliac...
  16. Yes it is normal to have ups and downs. I know I did. But like the previous poster says, keep at it. It might pay to have a food diary where you write down everything you eat and drink, brand names etc, and by doing this you might be able to see a pattern and might be able to pinpoint what has been giving you problems. It could be other intolerances...

    Been A While

Yes it has been a while since I've blogged. Not much has happened, just been working hard and trying to get on. A couple points of interest this week: 1) a fellow worker looking over my shoulder and saying "you can't eat rice, it has gluten in it." So I proudly pointed out that I was eating sausage as well! She is just one of the mis-informed...
  18. Tell me about it. And I have been limiting my food intake to 1500 a day! No wonder it is not working, but I am too scared to go any less. Maybe I have to. I do notice that if I eat too much, even one day a week the scales go into overdrive. I hate this having to limit everything, but I hate being unwell. Unfortunately the one time I over do the eating...
  19. Hi everyone, hoping everyone is fine. The hummus I made was beautiful. Much better than the stuff you get from the supermarket. I only put a quarter of the amount of oil in and it worked out fine. Lovely with the chopped vegetables. Been a busy week. Started the extra hours tonight, so I am absolutely stuffed. Bradley, son, has been to Dr with...
  20. Liz congratulations to your daughter for winning a trip to Disney World. What an experience it will be for her. But I know how you feel about not being there. My diet is going well. I only overate one day last week, and so far this week so good. I have been asked to work an extra couple of hours three times a week. For the money I will do it. It...

    Celiac On The Job

Little c. I'm like you, nearly in my 50's and have only been diagnosed over a year now. It was a blindsider. I never thought twice about telling my boss, and he probably knew more about it than I did. We've had a few deep conversations about our bowels etc. Thankfully not any more. He was very sympathetic, and sometimes gives me a hard...
  22. Brendygirl thanks for this blog entry. It has given me food for thought. I was a bit naughty and have printed it off, hope you will forgive me. I intend to take note of quite a lot of your comments and suggestions. I could say I know a lot of them already, but to have them all in the one place is awesome. I keep on trying, but obviously I am not...
  23. I can't help you there unless you go via New Zealand to stock up on our food and then go to the middle of nowhere. Cathy
  24. Hello Autumn. sorry you are feeling a bit down. Hope it doesn't last and that you are up and away again very soon. I had a bit of a down day yesterday. I came home from work, made them an egg and bacon pie and retreated to my room to catch up on videos, dvd's and eating. Needless to say I got quite a sick tummy later on. I just can't eat as much as...
  25. How about canned fruit, creamed rice, chickpeas etc. Canned tuna and salmon, baked beans, creamed corn. Corn crackers or rice crackers and maybe a few spreads. Just a few ideas. Hope you have fun in the middle of nowhere. Cathy
