ARCHIVED Mozart And The Whale

the thing about hugs... so normal for us around here...most NT's (relatives) think its odd that I ask my daughter if I can hug her... its second nature now for me. I know she will give me a warm squishy hug if I ask first...if I dont...she says: "why are you hugging me?" Most NT's cannot grasp the concept at all, that I do it out of respect for Kathryn... -

It depends on the perosn, Kathryn knows all about Aspergers, it helped all of understand and be able to help her. She watched the movie with me (she is 14 yr), and she identified with some parts and not with others...it helped me see the depth of her empathy to the group and her lonliness at times - because at 14, she does not have friends - she has people... -

It must be doubly difficult some days! My husband is the forgetful one so we live off sticky notes as reminders. You could get a white board or a bulletin boeard and put it in a prominent place. Put up activities a few days in advance. Since your boy sounds like he will remember - even ask him to remind you. Kinda like: You know how I can get busy... -

I have one NT child and one Aspie. Ursula had a fabulous idea - see if you can get it on video. Matt (the NT) has times where he "let go" after tiring day, all you had to do was feed him #1, and allow him to rest. With Kathryn, there is no way I can truly describe it - it was like a complete "fall apart", more than just tired or hungry, exhausted from... -

Sounds like Kathryn - is doing very well in grade 8 math - but cant add 2 dice together correctly. Its the contradiction of Aspergers. Kathryn hates tag , she wont play it because people tag her too hard or when they do tag her - she says" No Thanks I dont want to be IT". Please read all you can about Aspergers, be his advocate, insist they make accomodations... -

You can be gluten intolerant and have effects from gluten.. if blood test was negative yet you have had great response ot gluten free then go with that. My daughter used to get migraines too - horrible ones. None since gluten free. Eating without gluten is just eating differently and having awareness of what you put in your body. Educate yourself... -

You sound like you understand what he needs - yes, how you say something is very important. Kathryn has to actually go through the motions, physically do it before she will know what to do. You can tell her in great detail how to do something but unless you are there - talking her through it one step at a time - then she will forget the sequence of what... -

You just described an autistic trait. They are a stickler for rules, rigid in many ways. He knows his job is to collect the carts and bring them back. In his mind, those customers are asking him to break the rules. He doesnt care about customer service, he cares about doing his job right. Now, I dont know this boy or his personality but if that is his... -

Aspergers has been defined by some as high functioning autism. The movie shows a group of individuals all along the "spectrum of autism"..what that means is that there are varying degrees of how it presents - and that is explained in the commentary that can be played through the movie. They do an excellent job of representing these individuals as unique... -

That's cause you are an Aspie and are smarter, so you already figured it out You dont need a doctor to confirm what you already know - yes, get the Tony Attwood book. Temple Grandin also wrote a really good book called : Thinking in Pictures, and other reports from my life with Autism. Temple revolutionized cattle handling systems across North... -

Dr. Butzner is a leading the pack for celiac in pediatrics. He has special interest. Just prior to my children being diagnosed in 2004 he had completed a study re: testing first degree relatives of any celiac patients. He also works closely with the endocrine clinic because of the increased risk of diabetes and hypothyroidism occuring with celiac. He made... -
I posted earlier and we are Catholic and Pope approved and all - we receive Communion in the wine only - the priest has a separate chalice on the altar that he sets aside for our kids (the 2 celiacs in the church) he covers it with a paten and only puts a piece of host in he main chalice, (never in the separate one). Perfectly acceptable, very safe. Recently...

I know my husband (who is not celiac) gets a gut ache when he eats the Stacked type of potatoe chip (be it lays or pringles). there is so much other stuff added cause they form the chip in a machine. He doesnt get a stomach ache when he eats regular potatoe chips. Sandy I agree that it could be the soy or any of the other crap they add to make the chip... -

I think its great that they mentioned celiac and maybe they will present an indepth program in the future. It's also good that more programs get correct information out to the public about autism. We are all passionate about celiac and wanting to get the word out since it is often mis-diagnosed and missed as a diagnosis. I wish they would have program... -

Is it a burning, very painful pain in the upper abdomen? My son has duodenitis right now - not uncommon in celiacs . The characteristic of duodenal pain is that is ahppnes at night when stomach acid production peaks. It is caused by a variety of factors, but complete relief when stomach acid reducers are given. Over the counter Antacids dont do much but... -

The last page has a spot to add any additional notes and there is nothing wrong with adding a loose leaf page with notes and including it with the package when you send it back. I have done that before in similar questionares they have sent regarding diabetes or Kawasaki They ARE interested in asymptomatic kids .... it helps them when they are working... -

HI and welcome! I am sorry you are being told to wait so long. My children have a number of conditions and we have always gotten results over the phone - from cardiology to endcocrine and GI. The Gi clinic got us in within 4 days to review biopsy results and diet ect..but they did tell me over the phone that celiac was confirmed (with both kids). Gosh... -

I received a package yesterday from the pediatric gastroenterolgy section at Alberta Children's hospital. it is difficult for most people affected by Aspergers and autism to make eye contact. Think of how many articles are written about active listening and making eye contact - it appears to most people as if the person (Asperger) is not listening or is disinterested because they look down or away, or off to the side. Yet they ARE listening. Sandy -

NT = neurotypical (neuro: brain) It is a term to differentiate between a person affected by autism (most commonly) and a "normal" person. Sandy -
We're Catholic and the priest has a separate chalice for wine - in the Catholic Communion rite, they break a piece of the large host into the wine. That bit of wafer was enough to give our daughter symptoms. No problem having accomodations made - just talked to the priest and he told us how we could partake and not get sick. Sandy
