  1. I guess I don't get real excited when a "cure" or pill is in the near future... I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 1986 and at that time they figured a"cure" was imminent...well here we are 21 years later.......the only cure involves islet cell transplants and you need immune suppressents for that "cure". Diabetes has been researched for years and they...
  2. Your dog is not alone and is in fact - quite normal. Certain breeds dig, they dig for insects, they dig for fun, they dig because they are after a rodent the hear scurry underground. Now I know you are asking about sod - it relates, and here's how: The roots of new sod smell good, sod often comes from nutrient rich soil where composting or fertilizers are...
  3. This is from a post by RKB MD under a thread called: celiac sprue and doctor too
  4. Celiac has a range if symptoms that are simliar to other diseases, and is classified as a type malabsorbtion. (because of intestinal damage). It can cause growth failure, failure to thrive, gastrointestinal symptoms seem to predominate in babies and toddlers. Older children and adults can have a long list of symptoms - bedwetting to migraines and anything...
  5. You're not alone, my daughter is 14 - has Aspergers, hypothyroid, celiac, recovered from Kawasaki, allergic to stinging insects, and is currently under investigation for autimmune hepatitis. My son is Type 1 diabetic, celiac and has thyroid nodules, I have Type 1 diabetes, hypothyroidism, need B 12 injections... Life is pretty interesting when we go camping...
  6. yes, take a look at the links I included in my earlier post. Celiac and CF can occur together, just as a number of autoimmune disdorders can occur with celiac in the same patient. On the other hand, many patients have celiac and only celiac. Some patients have celiac and a number of food intolerances or allergies but no other "diseases". Patients with...
  7. my son is 12 and has Type 1 plus celiac. He was having stomach aches in Dec and i finally brought him in - he was diagnosed with "duodenitis" and gioven acid reducers - instant relief! The hallmark of duodenitis (from excess acid produced) is the pain occurs in the late evening or at night. Peak acid production occurs then. If it happens after a recent...
  8. I dont know that is is often misdiagnosed but a pediatrician should test any child under 2 for cystic fibrosis if they have issues of malabsorbtion - along with celiac and inborn errors of metabolism and a number of other conditions. Whether or not they test for everything would be determined by symptoms and medical history. It would be easy to rule out by...
  9. I have included some links about the diet and autis. There was aremarkable differecne with kathryn after going gluten free - energetci, interactive, smiling, social skills improved, ability to focus etc. The GI doc asked the teachers to write down their observations in the classroom, becasue he wants to build a file showing that this diet may help those affected...
  10. I agree, my post was kind of tongue in cheek, and when my daughter fell, she was 10 yrs old, not a toddler. She also had sensory issues with her mouth so I had to be doubly cautious about food - or she would choke. She banged her cheek once and had bruise...she did this while walking in a special walker when she was 3yr old(the kind used by handicapped...
  11. not sure about that - with kids, yes its predicatble that when they start to walk - they will fall.....when they start to eat - they will choke........when they ride abike they will fall off of it.. my daughter tripped on the sidewalk once and hit the sidewalk face first, horrible nosebleed big patch of blood on the sidewalk......... how I could have...
  12. Andrea, my thoughts and prayers are with you. We just lost Mike's mom Jan 4th after a month in ICU, watching the deterioration was the worst part. I'm sure his wife doesnt even know what to do moment to moment becasue it's all consuming. Sandy
  13. The appt on Tuesday went very well. I was impressed because they have another doctor seeing patients (my regular ped is away), plus they had a student (an MD studying pediatrics).. to my surprise, they had reviewed her file the night before, along with my letter and had a "game plan". We got the blood taken first thing this morning - complete urine, a whole...
  14. casein intolerance acts like glutening too.... look up some info on casein intolerance and see if it fits. Casein is the protein in milk. Lactaid only deals with lactose intolerance. Sandy
  15. I'm so glad she's okay! So scary when those things happen! On Escalators - even with shoes on, I have heard about little ones who had shoelaces dangling that got snagged between steps. You did what most mothers would do - your on vacation, the kid is kicking up a fit cause they want to get to the pool.....where you have to take the shoes off anyway....
  16. then all of Rachelville will like this! words women use 1.) Fine: This is the word women use to end an argument when they are right and you need to shut up. 2.) Five Minutes: If she is getting dressed, this means a half an hour. Five minutes is only five minutes if you have just been given five more minutes to watch the game before...
  17. This gave me a chuckle, thought you would enjoy it too Ed was in trouble. He forgot his wedding anniversary. His wife was really angry. She told him "Tomorrow morning, I expect to find a gift in the driveway that goes from 0 to 200 in less then 6 seconds AND IT BETTER BE THERE!!" The next morning Ed got up early and left...
  18. Thanks Rachel She's a pretty neat kid! Sandy
  19. sigh, I do remind them... I think it is because she is a child - they chuckle .....they nod like they heard me .....and then on the way out, they figure its just a matter of "getting her used to it".. and I should expose her to more "opportunity" to greet new people. I have even been told that she responds that way because " I allow it". Just like there...
  20. I agree but how many children recoil from a parent hugging them, and have to be asked first? Its more pronounced than an uncomfortable feeling. I have never taken it personally, its the way Kathryn is and I get these wonderful beautiful hugs - when I ask. Also Kathryn, when she was younger got angry and I mean perturbed because I always said " I love you...
  21. aphthous ulcers is a fancy name for mouth sores or canker sores. It is very common to get mouth sores with celiac. Before we found out my daughter was celiac, she had them frequently, sometimes so many it hurt to eat and we had to only have soft food, no juice etc. Since gluten free, not one ! sandy if you google: aphthous ulcers and celiac many...
  22. cotton candy is usually okay. Both my kids have it once a year at the Stampede, but they share one "cone" as it is so sweet that they dont want it all. The dye in the coloring may be a problem for some as many people have problems with the food dye. Sandy
  23. Sounds like they need a lesson in people skills! Pico-Salax has been used in Canada for at least 2 years, and I have a site from a GI clinic about it. Maybe it will help (?) to bring it to tgeir attention - although based on the initial contact I doubt it! I did find links to other articles about its use for colonoscopy (Canadian based).... there...
  24. hmm, I had no problem at our school (when the kids were in elementary and snacks were common). Matt was diagnosed diabetic before celiac but it was handled the same. The teacher simply asked that parents let him know the day before if they were bringing cupcakes or snacks for their child. He only said it was so he could plan things accordingly, no privacy...
