  1. Although not a "power bar". Glucerna is good. - about 25 carbs - protein, energy and fiber - recomended by diabetes clinic at Childrens for Matt (diabetic/celiac). Tasty too! sandy
  2. Yes chocolate is a poison to dogs...not an allergy. It is the theobromine, and caffeine that affect them. The amount of chocolate in junior mints would not be enough to cause serious issues- because it is not solid chocolate...the center is the mint portion. I have seen a small dog (about 12 pounds get quite sick from eating a jersey milk bar)...and labrador...
  3. Tide is a detergent and like many detergents it can bother people's skin - so can the bounce sheets. As suggested, try another brand of detergent. As a side note- we often see skin problems in dogs that resolve once the owner switches to different laundry soap - dog have blankets or other bedding that gets washed , then they sleep on it for hours. The skin...
  4. My son has duodentitis and is on Nexium...works well. We had that experience too at a Childrens hospital - offered a sandwich When Kathryn was reovering form her appendectomy - she had nothing to eat for 2 days because she was sick (vomiting) then had surgery...offered her jello the first day and then - get this - her first real food is not...
  5. I wanted to reply to original question/observation... Yes the intestinal tract is lined with hundreds of lymph nodes and immune system has to be prominent in that area becasue that is where foreign proteins enter the body on a daily basis, when we eat, when we swallow. The immune system is throughout the body - in the spleen, liver, bone marrow and thymus...
  6. I perform basic cytology in clinic on pets - impression smears and needle aspirates...you can never tell visually by endoscopy what is going on at a cellular level. You need a microscope and special stains. Its hard but you wont know until histopathology reports come back. What is evident visually is inflammation and damage to the intestinal wall. I can...
  7. hmmm... I was wondering about this too..I was checking the board and hadnt been on since the previous day, no new posts and "flood control" came on.... Sandy
  8. This is an interesting thread...Kathryn is under investigation for a cause for protein and bilirubin in her urine ...waiting on tests to rule out lupus but minimal change disease could fit. They ruled out autoimmune hepatitis...hmmmm All that means is that lab tests have not been able to find an underlying disease or pathology to explain symptoms...
  9. My daughter just had a bunch of tests to rule it out, including an ultrasound of her liver. All blood test came back negative for autoimmune hepatitis. They just pulled more blood on Friday for an ENA panel and compliments to rule out systemic lupus since she has high titre ANA ( which can be positive in patients iwth autimmune diseases other than lupus)...
  10. For our church teas I bring a plate of fresh fruit and cheese tray. I put gluten free muffins in a separate baggie for the kids. They have small freezer there so I have some vanilla ice cream stashed. Corn chips and salsa are easy to grab and bring - I know it isnt sweet but its amunchie food. I make crispy rice squares too.... Sandy
  11. I would seek the guidance of a rheumatologist. Present him with whatever info you have about what they injected back into you. There are "rheumatology screens", ENA profiles, and other tests they can run. Likely what this idiot dr was doing was an experimental use of using one's own serum to vaccinate you against the perceived allergen. In animals...
  12. Dogs and cats can respond to a gluten free diet. I believe they are either celiac or gluten intolerant. I asked some "high up" vets who do internal medicine cases. They said there hasn't been any recent study of celiac in dogs other than the discovery years ago that it is found in the Irish Setter and the Wheaton terrier (ironic name). There have been no...
  13. This thread is too funny! I say during week 3 or 4, just when they might be "getting it" ...........put them on a plane, during which no gluten free food is available because they forgot to request a "special meal" when booking / or if they did remember - it wasnt put on the flight (oops sorry). The flight is a minimum 4 hours long and they arrive...
  14. Enjoy the visit! Don't get stuck in the snow they have there. Sandy
  15. What kind of treats does she like that you think she will miss? I got some wonderful recipes from this site - the donut holes are great - for my son who has to count carbs too - he can have one or two and he thinks he's gone to heaven. Crispy rice squares make your own popsicles with sugar free koolaid or juice make your own pudding pops - I make...
  16. Go for it! Nothing to lose and everything to gain. My daughter had the lowest possible number on bloodwork (antibodies) to still be called positive, GI doc was not convinced he would find celiac but felt it best to do biopsy. It was surprising - but she was definitely celiac. Blood test are not reliable in all circumstances. The gluten free diet is simply...
  17. Too funny!! That might explain why my dog had bits of orange material stuck in her teeth...sorry Steve, a few of your moles may be MIA... and the reason my dog has bad gas... Sandy
  18. laughing at Steve's post too.... more humour: Two kids are arguing over whose father is the wimpiest. The first one says," My dad is so scared that when lightning strikes, he slides underneath our bed." The second kid says, "That's nothing. My dad is so scared that when my mother works nightshift, he sleeps with the woman next door...
  19. hmm, can you imagine what would happen if the military person gets glutened and has brain fog? - that would affect a mission. Many jobs have strict medical qualifications - you can be a pilot with celiac but your vision better be 20/20. My dad was involved with Transport Canada until he retired...he could hold a restricted private license but had to have...
  20. The symptoms for celiac are a long list...weight loss is not always a symptom....my daughter actually gained weight, looked pregnant and never wanted to wear anything but sweatpants. If you were under stress in addition to being undiagnosed celiac - its like a double whammy for yor body. It takes a while to recover..hang in there! Stress affects the adrenal...
  21. well said.... To me its akin to telling an alcoholic to have a drink during holidays... so he doesnt feel left out or as long as he feels okay while he's drinking - it shouldn't hurt him. Telling the smoker who's trying to quit- that its okay if he/she smokes occasionally - it wont do enough damage to be worried about. To tell the mom of a child...
  22. GOOD NEWS Kathryn's test came back negative for autoimmune hepatitis. Huge relief here. They dont know why she has had bilirubin and urobilinogen but liver looks fine on blood and on ultrasound. Next step is the ped consulted a rheumatologist because she does have an elevated ANA and they suggested some more blood work to investigate that. I...
  23. I beg to differ - there are varying degrees of symptoms in individuals with celiac. The damage to the intestine, however is severe with gluten in any celiac. This truth was made crystal clear at biopsy -I have 2 children diagnosed celiac. the doctor never said - one is worse than the other, or go ahead and eat a little if it doesnt bother you. He was...
  24. I dont get the feeling that it is being ignored, they have to go through rigorous trials and then deal with laws governing new drugs. Federal drug agencies (not a pharmaceutical company, but a gov't regulated agency that has to examine all data. They cant announce a cure - unless they have done all that first. To do so would be irresponsible. I did hear...
  25. Copper deficiency in dogs is usually evident in the hair coat: The hair coat of Black Labrador dogs turning brown has been demonstrated to be a copper deficiency caused by zinc addition to the diet without a corresponding increase in copper supplementation. Digging is natural in dogs, they like the soil and it relieves boredom..usually pica is - eating...
