  1. hmm, then maybe he hasnt looked. See my signature we are a cluster of autoimmune conditions - in the same person and all in the family. Doctors fall into a trap sometimes - initially when taking my daughter in for exams etc - they always wanted to attribute clinical signs to the one diagnosis - til it becme apparent my kids and I never read that chapter...
  2. if you suspect you may have diabetes, see your doctor promptly.
  3. If people ask further questions - depending on who asks - you can simply describe celiac disease in general. We dont have to reveal all the details about how sick we get. We can't have gluten - plain and simple. It makes me sick. If you dont get sick for days - does that part matter?? You get sick, it destroys your small intestine. When and how are irrelavent...
  4. Remember the KIS rule - Keep it simple. When I tell people about the kid's celiac - I start with - we found out why the kids were so sick. They have celiac disease and cannot have gluten - which comes from wheat, rye, barley and oats. I leave the floor open for questions. I found that most people tuned out - unless they were the ones asking questions...
  5. Same is true for Type 1 diabetes - something triggers it. The genetic predisposition is always there ...the trigger can vary - from stress to an illness. Stress (physical or emotional) wreaks havoc on the body - immune system, brain chemicals , hormones (all kinds). Stress leads to poor eating habits (no appetite or grabbing comfort foods) and lack of...
  6. ....the pancreas is NOT totally destroyed in Type 1 diabetes. Type 1 is the autoimmune attack on the islet cells, it it happens over a period of time and once enough cells have been destroyed - symptoms become apparent. At diagnosis there is often still some remaining islet cells causing what is called "honeymoon period"....I remained on relatively low...
  7. Type 1 diabetics have a higher incidence of celiac disease - both are autoimmune. In diabetes the islet cells that produce insulin are targeted and destroyed by the immune system. The cells of the pancreas that produce digestive enymes are not. There is a condition called pancreatic insufficiency - that results in malabsorbtion - but there is profound...
  8. Thanks for the faith in me! Chemotherapy is quite successful in lymphosarcoma, not as great with bone cancers depending on the type. There are varieties of cancers, some respond better than others. We refer any cases requiring chemo because we do not have the experience/expertise with this treatment. I have included a link to a site about chemo in cats...
  9. I am so sorry to hear about your kitty. So young too! I understand why they asked questions to find out how the kitty may have been hurt but I am horrifed that they made you feel like you were on trial! I can only guess that the vet tech was inexperienced. 1) people who hurt their animals intentionally never take them to emerg clinics, they usually wait...
  10. You are not doing anything wrong. Kids dislike change - I think lots of people do.. Kids complain about any new food - gluten or gluten free. I remember the first time I introduced lasagna - when they were younger. They refused, made faces, played with it........the next time I made it...they were hungry enough that one tried a bite - then dove in saying...
  11. Oh silly, dont be sorry I know what you meant, guess I'm trying to reach the newbies as well. I know how hard the diabetic /celiac combo is - its like a double whammy. I have sad days too, my worst is when my neuropathy is really bad and I try and hide the pain from my son and inside praying he never has to deal with the complications .....knowing...
  12. Pumpkin is good for the intestines! We use pure pumpkin (not pie filling pumpkim with added sugar etc) in dogs when they have diarrhea or constipation - workes nice and is natural! We add about a tbsp of pumpkin to their food twice a day - that would be for 20 - 40 lb dog, we double it ( 2 tbsp) for 40 -70 and 70 + , we give 3 tbsp in a.m. and 2 at...
  13. My son is diabetic celiac too...it is hard and there are ups and downs. For bagels - have you tried the Kinnickinnick bagels - they are yummy. Real bread? I guess the kids have never made that statement becasue they do eat "real" bread all the time - made with a different flour. If you change the way things are phrased it can help cope - they cant have wheat...
  14. Again, man interfering with nature. It isn't a food they would get in nature, so man decided - hey lets feed something processed... sigh. Will "man" ever learn that insects and mammals have survived for thousands of years.... without us....or in spite of us.... Sandy...just my rambling opinion..
  15. We have to do this all the time for scout camp - dried fruits travel well, Thai noodles (I take out the flavour packet they send and substitute chicken bovril powder -its gluten free in Canada). All you need is hot water then. I have dehydrated turkey from a hiking store - add some to the noodles and the hot water plumps them up. Cereal in a baggie / send...
  16. Try eliminating dairy for several days. My daughter used to get pains like you describe. Throught inof on this site I decide to tets for lactose and/or casein intolerance . I reintordcued dairy - she got sick . Then I gave lactose free milk - not sick! If she had gotten scik on lactose free milk then it would have been casein bothering her. Hope this...
  17. try not to panic - easier said than done. I have been through so much with my kids - I know the anxiety you speak of! They may not want to give results over the phone for a number of reasons. A nurse who is familiar with your son should be the one to deliver the results. If the results are positive, they would want to tell you in an office setting because...
  18. This is a site about the criteria for living donations (of liver). Sorry to hear about your mom, I hope she can feel a bit better while on supportive care.. Sandy
  19. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease. The body reacts to the gluten as an invader and attacks the intestinal villi where the gluten is absorbed = flattened villi, damaged intestine, malabsorbtion. Untreated celiac may also result in other autoimmune conditions if left untreated. Gluten sensitivity has many similar symptoms to celiac but the villi are...
  20. I guess it depends how someone says it - it sounds empathetic rather than pity. Someone recognized that its more work to buy food than most people when you have to read labels - be it for gluten or peanuts or soy. I have had people say almost exactly the same thing to me - I simply respond with the truth - it was hard at first but now it's second nature...
  21. Maybe he said it out loud - because he was surprised that there could be pizza in the celiac diet. I remember being so blank about what gluten free was and what foods my kids could have when they were first diagnosed. I thought - no doughnuts, pizza, spagetti.........little did I know! Perhaps some bystanders with minimal knowledge would see someone they...
  22. Biopsies dont go bad - not to worry. The samples are taken and then frozen and thin tissue slices taken and placed on a slide and stained. It's frustrating to say the least that a histopathologist (the person who would examine your slide) hasn't written a report yet of his findings! I would ask questions and find out why it's taking so long! Why would...
  23. The symptoms vary greatly! Some can be asymtomatic and others can be debilitated.I have 2 children, both confirmed celiac. daughter - migraines, neck ache, back ache, stomach aches, fatigue, intermittent fevers and rashes. Bloating and constipation. Gluten free diet eliminated these symptoms. son - leg pains, wetting the bed and intermittent mild stomach...
  24. Migratory birds that stay behind because food is being supplied - then rely on humans to feed them over the winter. Bird feeders, if set up ,must be supplied with wild bird seed and kept full - the birds do become dependent on them. In essence you have made wild birds - domesticated because they rely on humans. Migratory birds finding their own food...
  25. We could learn a lot from the animal kingdom, never seen one cook over an open fire, refine the food before eating or munch on a twinkie We would not do well if we ate duck chow, or only ate grass and hay, or ate only meat. Each species has specific food requirements and digestive processes. Birds have gizzards and need to eat gravel for it to work...
