  1. I dont think you did a horrible job either. I saw that you asked for input about writing - so I gave it. I have several articles published and that is different than writing a paper for school. During the process for publication - it is edited several times. I think I misunderstood what you had asked - perhaps you were only asking for comments regarding...
  2. Sick animals require us (owners) to sometimes make the decision to end their suffering.. The animals dont have conflicted thoughts about living or dying. Because they are domesticated, humans interupt the cycle of life - in that only the fittest survive - the sick and the weak succmb to the elements or to predators in the wild or on the street. Domesticated...
  3. I am so sorry to hear that Barley is at the end of his battle with DM. It will be the hardest day.... when you bring him in. I am an AHT and I want to help you understand some things about the process of euthanasia- it may or may not help you.... I am just so sad for you and Barley. I would ask the veterinary staff that all paperwork , questions...
  4. I would suggest you play "mama bear" and advocate for some testing. Primary reason is that kids can have celiac in addition to other issues. Any time a child falls from their normal percentile on the growth curve should prompt testing. Celiac, hypothyroidism, other bowel malabsorbtion syndromes can cause growth delay. My son had leg pains and bedwetting...
  5. and ask for a pediatric GI...the doctor who saw our kids said that symptoms are so varied and children often present with "Non- classic" symptoms. I cant quote the dr exactly but he said something like: Celiac disease is one of the great " imitators" (meaning the symptoms could match a number of conditions) and any child presenting with seemingly unrelated...
  6. Fortunately not all doctors are like this. We have a wonderful GI doc for both kids, he is on the board for a Canadian celiac group. The first appt with him for my daughter, I reviewed symptoms with him, and many were neurologic (migraines, neck aches, backache), also stomach aches, bloated abdomen, considered overweight for her height, no diarrhea. Prior...
  7. my experience with biopsies is from clinic situations. Prep of skin is minmal as prep solutions can affect biospy results. With skin, we take a minimum 5 biopsies. 2 from active lesions, 3 resolving lesions, an adjacent area of normal skin, and samples are taken from multiple sites on the body (anywhere lesion is found). Do not try and use iodine to induce...
  8. Kathryn recently complains of nausea and a burping aftertaste " like she had milk"...but prior to the onset - she hasnt had any dairy at all. She gets flushed cheeks, nausea and abdominal pain below her belly button. Any ideas what woul give her a "milk aftertaste"?? She describes it as gross and that it increases the nausea. Sandy
  9. Okay, my background is veterinary medicine. I've seen lots of parasites. From what I have seen of the bowel cleanses - there is a lot of scare mongering. From: Open Original Shared Link Most parasites are host specific. You cannot get pinworm from your cat or dog. Only horses and humans (or primates) get pinworms. The horse pinworm will not infect...
  10. It is frustrating because others without celiac disease have no knowledge of the disease and do not have to follow the diet - it is a choice rather than being used to treat an autoimmune disease. I liken it to diabetes when discussing it - a diabetic has to follow a diet - and watch carb intake, weigh food, take insulin (or meds if Type 2) etc. Diabetics...
  11. I use the tinkyada in soups all the timer. If I am going to freeze the soup - I take what I am going to freeze before I add any pasta.... Then when I thaw the soup and reheat it - I add the pasta at that time. I have found it loses texture once frozen. Sandy
  12. The following are Fancy Feast flavors contain NO wheat gluten and are below 10% carbs: Tender Beef Feast (brown label color) Tender Beef & Liver Feast (magenta) Tender Beef & Chicken Feast (red) Gourmet Chicken Feast (dark pink...be careful, this looks just like another chicken variety with gluten!) Turkey & Giblets Feast (olive green...
  13. This is kinda 2 topics in one. I also do not understand the food rewards for kids in school. The "rewards" are usually candy or junk food. Not a bowl of grapes and some cheese. Not extra play time outside - what kid wouldn't want to run and play for 15 mins as a reward? Why not high five very kid in the class and say "Great job!" Good points have...
  14. They actually answered more than your question. You asked about a specific product...the letter is for ALL their products ...and they say they will list any ingredient or flavoring clearly so that if some flavour is wheat based - it will be clearly labeled etc. Companies put the onus back on the consumer to read all labels. Yoplait is saying - read the label...
  15. It is not uncommon for a person with one autoimmune disease to have other autoimmune diseases. Many just have one. For others they can cluster...look up polyendocrine autoimmune disorders. Certain disease are more likely to occur together: eg : Type 1 diabetes and thyroid, or celiac and thyroid, thyroid and adrenal failure (addisons), adrenal failure and...
  16. I wish I had photo scanner and I could scan in her face with myxedema! It was generalized puffy look around the face - eyes look half closed most times and she had yellow tinged butterfly complexion (the yellowish discoloration is an accumulation of carotene seen in severe hypothyroid) the cheeks and then over the bridge of the nose. It does not go away...
  17. Hypothyroidism would have to be significant to cause obesity. More investigation is needed to find out why your child gains weight despite a restricted diet. My daughter had severe hypothyroidism diagnosed at age 4... TSH was the higest recorded at the Chiildrens hospital other than a baby born without a thyroid gland. her TSH was over 900 and her T4 was...
  18. This is an excellent site about ovarian cysts including rupture of them: Open Original Shared Link Sandy
  19. my kids have had the frostys at wendy's and they are gluten free - my daughter is very sensitive to gluten. Also the baked potatoe with broccoli and cheese sauce is gluten free as they use corn starch in the cheese sauce. Sandy
  20. symptoms of hyperthyroidism do include a racing heart as the heart rate is increased, also weight loss and elevated temperature are not uncommon, What you described is a severe hypoglycemic event. The shakiness and sensations you describe are related to an adrenalin release. It is not unusual that your blood sugar was still low after the juice and banana...
  21. The correlation between celiac and type 1 diabetes is known and both are autoimmune. The article cited by surreygirl is about pancreatic function being impacted by Type 1 diabetes - the destruction of the islet cells impacts the other function of the pancreas which is to produce digestive enzymes. The pancreas has 2 jobs : both exocrine (the enzymes) and...
  22. These are a couple of sites that may have useful info for you and your dad... Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link Hope it helps, let us know how surgery went Sandy
  23. VH brand soy sauce is gluten free, they also have medium garlic sauce (marinade) and a teriaki sauce that is gluten free. I buy it at major grocery stores - IGA, superstore... I am in Canada , dont know if that brand is available everywhere. Sandy
  24. it isnt only the fact of being "sick" that leads to depression. I will try and find the links that discuss the fact the diabetics lack enough brain chemicals . The diabetes (and all it entails) depletes seratonin as well as nor-epinephrine - both crucial brain chemicals. I was on seratonin reuptake inhibitors but it wasnt enough....tried some others before...
