  1. That's iffy - on hay rides, kids start throwing straw , or someone gets up and down -poof - a cloud of dust... My daughter got sick from playing inside and empty grain bin - just enough dust hanign aorund made her sick for the rest of the day. Too bad they didnt use alfalfa hay!! well, technically they call it a hay ride but its really straw...
  2. HI AnnaBelle, Yes it totally sucks that you have a disease that sets you apart! The good news - it will get better and easier esp when you feel better over time. I have two kids - they both have celiac, one also has diabetes. For them, the first year was hard, esp when they were subjected to my baking failures - first pizza crust I made from scratch tasted...
  3. Amusing reading - I went to the link out of curiosity - maybe I am just warped (and I knw they mean breast milk that has been expressed)...BUT : Good thing , hope it would not be a requirement to prove you really were lactating... and the breast milk inspections....hmmm ? ...... Ok. ok I am silly today
  4. I have a diabetic celiac child - he is allowed the insulin, syringes, his glucose meter. No food. If he needs food - they always have juice on board or in real pinch - pop (for carbs). The letter from the doctor related to his diabetes - simply states : This child _________ has insulin dependent diabetes and it is medically necessary for him to carry...
  5. Sounds fun, hope its a splendid birthday bash. We were forced to think of other options that are related to sensory issues etc with our daughter and then the diabetes with our son. Happy birthday to your daughter, I can hear the cameras clicking now! I never heard of the Cause your special cake mixes - that is so cool!
  6. It doesnt always have to be cake...maybe think creative, Fruit in a jello mold, pick her favorite fruits and favorite color jello. An 11 month old doesnt care if its a "cake" just something fun to eat and they can use their hands with jello too Just one idea... Think like a baby - a peeled banana with Happy Birthday written on it with an...
  7. Never had the cookies, the kids have eaten the cereal bars with no issues.
  8. This is what I found after brief search - Italy and celiac The first link is interesting reading, but long - talks about the various diagnostics etc a quote from the above link that I liked:

ARCHIVED Celiac Sprue & Doctor Too!

How would that ever be possible? No one company could accomodate dietary restrictions of all types. Even an airline - they would then have to get their lunches from dedicated lines to prevent cross contamination (peanut free, or gluten free or casein free, or soy free or additive free etc., , then have fat free and/or sugar fee meals for those that are restricted...
  10. for more information, I found these sites about drywall health problems associated with it and ingredients that would cause problems:
  11. Something you can do today - right now - is get a filter mask, not the kind that just goes over your mouth and nose, but the ones with filters on them - someone in the construction industry should be able to tell you where to get one. It would the kind one would wear when working with fertilizers and volatile gases etc... it would enable you to keep your...
  12. Have you been working on any renos where mould might be an issue? Any industrial jobs where solvents are used /stored? Yes drywall; dust can cause problems for celiacs but if the problem only started recently and you havent had symptoms before - keep your mind open to any possibility.
  13. I hope so - he's at a teaching hospital (a Childrens' hosp) and educates every resident that comes in... bonus is that he has a wonderful way with children, very patient and talks in their terms. It was kinda neat really - when the diagnosis was confirmed.... he sat down right across from Kathryn and talked to her about everything - saying " Now your mom...
  14. I agree with that, and think of all the knowledgable people here who have posted that they went to a doctor that told them - kids can outgrow it or - its sucha hard diet to stick, a little gluten is Ok,. how do we know what medical doctors told this family? and even if they came here..... looked at the forum, many poople still believe doctors know it all...
  15. Absolutely agree! The Gi doctor even told us, if the biopsy is negative and the daughter felt better off gluten, he would make sure the dietcian sat down with me and that I still join the celiac association for support.
  16. I think the choice of biopsy / no biopsy should be made on an individual basis. If a patient has GI symptoms and blood work is inconclusive then the point of the endoscopy is to have look at the small intestine, biopsy several sites and go from there. In our family, we chose the biopsy - the GI explained his reasons and the endocrinologist also recommended...
  17. The capsules are gluten-free, they use methylcellulose or gelatin to "bind it" - depending on the company. Amoxil is a brand name. The capsules for 250mg dose list the same ingredients for the capsule portion
  18. For our family it was very difficult to not think about it initially, so much to learn, read labels on everything, learn how to bake with different ingredients, educating family.....walking into stores was daunting at first - it felt like walking into a foreign country. We have diabetes to work around too - we had to figure out carb counts of gluten-free...
  19. Our GI doctor asked to see the children one year after diagnosis and then every 2 years OR he said any time they may be having problems following the diet or need support to do so. He was very empathetic with how difficult the teen years can be and how teens rebel against listening to their parents, the Gi Clinic provides support as needed for the kids.
  20. I love it - gotta try that and see what she says!
  21. ..or answer questions about "where does it hurt" and "how do you feel".... or co-operate with any strange guy/gal sticking thermometer up their butt or in their ear!
  22. You are like at gluten-free central. Edmonton is the location for the Kinnickinnick prodcuts - the bakery is located there, They ship all over Canada and U.S. Products can be found at Save on Foods in Sherwood Park and Safeways allover Edmonton. The specific Safeways are listed on the kininickinnick site - amt of product varies from store to store - so just...
  23. another site that may provide some diretion is an e-Medicine article on fevers - goes through differentials etc. Open Original Shared Link Also This is from a medical site as well - at first I thought the doctor who asked my child to jump up and down musta stayed up too late watching TV til it was explained to me.. I thought she was nuts at first...
  24. Not defending dcotors - but read the quote below - the treatment given the other child is a real treatment for certain illnesses. I really hope they get to the bottom of what is happening with your child, the fevers coming and going so frequently need to be investigated or at the very least monitored and documented by a doctor or nurse practioner...
  25. The ESR or erythrocyte sedimentation rate is not specific for autoimmune disease. It is an indication of inflammation somewhere in the body. If the sed rate is abnormal then further testing should be done to try an determine the cause and source of inflammation. An elevated sed rate is looked at in combination with other test results.
