Gluten Free Cat Food Help.

Hello. I'm not sure if this is the right forum, so please move it if necessary.

So Hills Science Diet just changed their food formulation for their cat food and it is no longer gluten free (dry foood). I could not figure out what it was that was getting me until I was goiing back over what was new in my home. I bought a new bag of cat food. So I was wondering what dry food other people use for their cats. I know there is a grain free type of cat food, I have been using it when I give them wet food, but it was really expensive and I was hoping that people had others that they use for dry food. I'm hoping not to have to read every package of dry food at the pet store. Plus it sucks that I just spent a bunch of money on a small bag of kitten food and a huge bag of cat food.  And I feel awful. Last night i couldn't figure out why it felt like I had guten caused insomnia, and now I have the rest of the symptoms. Bah!  Thx.

Note: It is the adult indoor cat food and kitten food that were no longer glulten free. Apparently they have some other formulas that are still guten free. But any suggestions would be helpful.

I feed my cat Blue Buffalo's Freedom Indoor.  Their Freedom line is all grain-free. Basically the ingredients are the same as their regular cat food, but it has potatoes as the carb source instead of barley.  The ingredient list looks the same otherwise.  I fed her blue buffalo indoor before switching, switched to gluten-free food for her because she eats like a little piggy, haha.

Also, Petsmart and Petco both have satisfaction guarantees, if you don't like the product you can bring it back for a refund.  You may be able to do the same at the store you bought the last bag of food at, so I would definitely check.

Thanks. I hadn't even thought about trying to take the bag  back. I got it at petco so hopefully they will take it back even though I already opened it. Yeah, one of my kitties is a little piggy too, the other one is really skinny.

My cats eat Acana. Especially the Pacifa smells go great, I have to get myself together not take a bite from it.

That acana brand looks like it is pretty good.   Mainly a canadian brand but they do sell it on petflow.   By the way, your white cat looks hilariously cute in your avatar. :)

I feed my cat Open Original Shared Link. My gluten sensitivity isn't so high that it affects me feeding her, but I've noticed my cat throws up and has digestion issues with regular (even high-quality) cat food that contains grains. It's a good buy for the price.

I feed my cats Wellness.

Best website for cat owners: Open Original Shared Link (has some food options and alot of other really good information - healed my cats diabetes from the information on this site. She was 2 years old and very ill, started feeding her wellness and in about 3 weeks she was back to being herself) Ironically she was grain free before I was LOL.

Just out of curiosity, why do you need gluten-free cat food? Do you react from touching it, or is it in the air or something?

Just touching it. One less thing to worry about especially with kids in the house. We do not have a cat anymore, but our dog is grain free.

Yep.  I keep my cat food in the kitchen on the far end of the counter.  One less intense handwashing step for when I feed her. (When I handle a gluten source I wash my hands and use a nail brush). I feed her a normal measured amount, but spread into four times per day because she begs and annoys the crud out of me.  Also, cats lick themselves all day grooming, you pet the cat, then touch other things.  Cat eats like a pig and picks up crumbs in her feet when she bats peices of food out of her dish before eating them because they are TOTALLY MORE DELICOUS THAT WAY! (Big joke in our house, she does that with water, too.), then walks all over everything.  Cat gets in your bed and paws at your face when she wants food, etc.  Also, getting other household members to 100% abide by "This contains gluten wash your hands after" is difficult.

Dogs are probably even more important, because they lick you in the face.  If you don't let a dog lick you, that is like their equivalent of a social rejection.  They, too are piggies when eating.  But yes, overall, just one less thing to worry about.

Yes, I, too, have osteoporosis from years of malabsorption, too.  Thiamine and magnesium are what keep the calcium in place in the bones.  If one is low in magnesium, boron, selenium, zinc, copper, and other trace minerals, ones bone heath can suffer.  We need more than just calcium and Vitamin D for strong bones.  Riboflavin B 2, Folate B 9 and Pyridoxine B 6 also contribute to bone formation and strength.   Have you had your thyroid checked?  The thyroid is important to bone health as well.  The thyroid uses lots of thiamine, so a poorly functioning thyroid will affect bone heath.

That sounds so very likely in my case! I will absolutely ask my doctor on my next bone check coming up in March... Thanks a lot!

Calcium levels as measured in the blood can be quite deceiving as the body will rob calcium from the bones to meet demands for it by other bodily functions. Also, supplementing with calcium can be counterproductive as it tends to raise gut pH and decrease absorption. More often than not, the problem is poor absorption to begin with rather than deficiency of intake amounts in the diet. Calcium needs an acidic environment to be absorbed. This is why so many people on PPIs develop osteoporosis. The PPIs raise gut pH. And some people have high gut PH for other reasons. Low pH equates to a more acidic environment whereas high pH equates to a more basic (less acidic) environment.

Kind thanks for all this valuable information! Since my Folate was/is low and also my Calcium, there IS a chance I am low in B vitamins... My doctor only measured the first two, oh and Zinc as I has twisted her arm and guess what, that was mega low too. So who knows, until I get myself tested properly, what else I am deficient in... I did a hair mineral test recently and it said to avoid All sources of Calcium. But this is confusing for me as my Ca is so low and I have osteoporosis because of this. It is my Adjusted Ca that is on the higher side and shouldn't be. So am not sure why the mineral test showed high Ca (well, it was medium in the test but relative to my lowish Magnesium, also via hair sample, it was high I was told). But anyway, thanks again for the VitB download, I will look into this most certainly!

Hello good afternoon, I was wondering if anyone has ever brought their anti-allergy pills? I have been wanting to use their Cetirizine HCI 10mg. They are called HealthA2Z and distributed by Allegiant Health.I’m also Asthmatic and these allergies are terrible for me but I also want to be sure they don’t have any sort of gluten compound.    I have tried calling them but to no avail. Has anyone ever used them? If so, did you had any problems or no problems at all?    thank you
