Cause & Effect

Hi I'm sort of new to this. I eat out a lot and I'm trying to identify resturants that may be causing problems for me. I was wondering how long it usually takes for the symptoms to appear after eating gluten and how long they last.

Thanks,

Pete

That is a hard question to answer because not everyone is the same. For me, I feel it right away and my reactions last about 2 weeks. For some people they get delayed reactions, some feel it right away, some get no symptoms at all. Reaction times vary from a few days to a few weeks.

I agree with Kaiti. Everyone is different. I have only had one known reaction and it was within 30 minutes after eating. I am hoping I continue to do this right but I am sure to get glutened again. From what I have read here, it seems to happen to most people.

We just have to do our absolute best to stay gluten-free and learn from any mistakes that are made along the way. Good luck!

It varies from person to person but I usually get sick within an hour or two and it lasts for five days.

What if you feel fine eating gluten and then go on the diet - do you know that you've been glutened? I'm anemic and I'm having a biopsy next month due to the fact of some anti-body being too high in my blood work. Anyway, I do have to take iron to have any energy but other than that, I feel pretty good no matter what I eat. I have a symptom that is related to diverticulosis that I mistook for a celiac disease symptom. Anyway, I'm going to go on the diet and see what happens, regardless of the biopsy results. That will be the tie breaker between blood test and biopsy. But since I don't have typical gastro symptoms now, how will I know if I've been mistakenly glutened? Are there any of you out there that were in my situation - feeling good before the diet? If so, can you tell if you get glutened?

I hope I'm typing this in the right place, anyway, I just wanted to say thanks for the response. Not exactly what I was hoping for, makes it hard to figure out where the gluten came from. Guess I'll have to be more assertive when ordering at restuarants. Problem is, as I'm sure you know, not all of them even know what I'm asking them. I saw an article about the increasing awareness of Celiac in Wall Street the other day, could be there is hope.

Thanks again,

Pete

Have you tried the Triumph dining cards? They do help - I used mine the very night I got them - was going to order beef tips, handed the card to the server and asked him if he had ever seen them - which I knew he hadn't - small town; he went to the kitchen and came back telling me that the chef said the meat came with flavoring and soy was used - and that I should order the chicken or fish. It was nice to have one relaxed meal where I didn't have to worry about getting sick. For me, the symptoms wouldn't appear for nearly 24 hours, then I'd have a hard time tracing back to where I had ingested gluten. Obviously have a slow stomach

Thanks for mentioning those Triumph dining cards! I went and ordered mine, they'll make life easier. And I sent the e-mail from the site to get a friend with a celiac daughter to get them, too. They sound like a fabulous idea. And will explain things to waiters/chefs much better than I can.

I have been feeling terrible for these past two days, and haven't got a clue why. I know I didn't eat anything with gluten these past days, but something, somewhere it happened. I think I might react slowly, too, and will therefore rarely be able to figure it out. Especially since my husband eats things containing gluten, and isn't careful with contaminating my stuff at all, even though I explained to him how serious it is.

Just the other day, he was soaking my gluten free frying pan (I bought a stainless stell pan just for myself), and was soaking some spatulas and cooking spoons (including an old wooden one) in it, that had ALL been used for preparing foods with gluten! And then he can't understand why I lose it and start crying. I am trying SO hard to stay gluten free, and then he does things like that! It's very frustrating.

Pete, here's a link to getting the cards: Triumph dining cards

So I've been dealing with chasing the name celiac because of my body actively dealing with health issues related to celiac though not eating. Diagnosed in 1994 before foods eliminated from diet. After 25 years with former pcp I googled celiac specialist and she wasn't because of what ive been through. I wanted my results to be sent to my pcp but nothing was sent.I have email copies.I did one zoom call with np with team member from celiac specialist in Nov 2025 and she asked me why I wanted to know why I wanted the celiac diagnosis so bad, I sad I don't, its my life and I need revalidaion because its affecting me.KB stated well it shows you are.I asked then why am I going through all this.I was labeled unruly. Its been a celiac circus and medical has caused anxiety and depression no fault to my own other than being born with bad genetics. How is it legal for medical professionals to gaslight patients that are with an ailment coming for help to be downplayed? KB put in my records that she personally spent 120min with me and I think the zoom call was discussing celiac 80 min ONE ZOOM call.SHE is responsible for not explaining to my pcp about celiac disease am I right?

I've noticed with my age and menopause my smell for bread gives me severe migraines and I know this. Its alarming that there are all these fabulous bakeries, sandwich places pizza places popping up in confined areas.Just the other day I suffered a migraine after I got done with my mri when a guy with a brown paper bag walk in front of me and I smelled that fresh dough bread with tuna, I got a migraine when we got home.I hate im that sensitive. Its alarming these places are popping up in airports as well.I just saw on the news that the airport ( can't remember which  one)was going to have a fabulous smelling bakery. Not for sensitive celiacs, this can alter their health during their travel which isn't safe. More awareness really NEEDS to be promoted, so much more than just a food consumption!FYI I did write to Stanislaus to let them know my thoughts on the medical field not knowing much about celiac and how it affects one.I also did message my gi the 3 specialist names that was given on previous post on questions on celiac. I pray its not on deaf door.
