What do the results mean?

Hiya, 

 

Hope someone can help me. I have had stomach cramps and bloating and therefore had a blood test. The results dont say alot. Just 

Anti-tissue transglutnase lev    0.8 u/mL < 10.9. 

This is all I have. What does this mean, as I'm confused about the results when researching. I have cut out all wheat and gluten and my gut does feel better for it. I am now having issues with dairy as well. 

 

If anyone can help it be much appreciated.

Because you have symptoms you should probably get the full celiac panel. The full celiac panel is:

TTG IGA

TTG IGG

DGP IGA

DGP IGG

IGA

EMA

You have to be eating gluten until all celiac testing is done.

A positive on any one celiac blood test should result in a gastroenterologist doing in an endoscopy/biopsies.

It looks like you just did TTG IGA. And that test came up negative.

It looks like your doctor ran the screening TTG.  Did he run a concurrent Immunoglobulin A test (IgA)?  That second test is used as a control test, if your are IgA deficient, then the celiac TTG IgA test would be invalid.  Other celiac tests would then be ordered.  To make things a bit more complicated, some celiacs do not test positive on the TTG (like me) or some celiacs are seronegative (negative on all the blood tests).  Your doctor should order the complete panel (DGP, EMA and the IgA deficiency test).  If all negative and you both still suspect celiac disease, you should proceed to an endoscopy which is still the gold standard in diagnosing celiac disease (it can catch other illness too or rule them out).  

All celiac testing requires you to be on a full gluten diet.  I hope you were on gluten when you got this test.  Get back on if you want to pursue further testing.  

Be persistant.  Obviously something is wrong.  So keep advocating for your health.  Obtain and keep all your medical records in case you change doctors.  It just makes good sense to maintain them yourself.  The best person to really care about you — is you!

Thank you. No she didn't run a IgA. Just the TTG

I am still struggling, even though my stomach is feeling better from not having gluten and wheat, my body is not happy with milk and other dairy products either. So I have stopped them and gone lactose intolerant as well. 

 

I will make an appointment to see my GP and see where we go from here, as something isn't right and I think the endoscopy could be a good idea after the complete panel has been ordered. I'm not sure why I wasn't tested for all the panel anyway. 

 

Yes, I have just changed drs and she doesn't seem to be much different to the last. I am able to log on to my patient account and get access to all my results and medical appointments etc. Which is where I got these results from but my GP hasn't been in touch to tell me or where we go from here. She just said some people who have it can show negative results and just cut it all out, which doesn't really tell me what else if anything is going on and it must be because I am still unwell and my stomach is rejecting almost all food. No idea why.

      Welcome @Trish G to the forum. Hard or lumpy stools and infrequent bowel movements.  My brother likes Phillips Stool Softener, Ducolate Sodium.   Just a question. Was the benefiber helping?

      I think you may be correct. The way the results are printed makes it appear as though it’s the ttg iga but I think you’re right—the 646 is total iga. So this would be indicative of another issue (another autoimmune condition, infection, cancer, etc.) and my doctor would need to do further testing. Thank you for saying this!

      Are you sure that is the TTG IgA? Based on the units (mg/dL) and having an upper limit to the normal range, it looks like a total IgA result.

      I am wondering if there are any vegetarians or vegans on this forum. I’ve been vegan for 15+ years and am just finding out I likely have celiac disease (blood panel done, need biopsy). My favorite foods—outside of vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds—I will likely have to give up. Anyone else?

      Welcome to the forum, @Trish G! "Gluten free" does not necessarily equate to "no gluten". According to FDA standards it actually means that a food product contains no more than 20ppm of gluten. This is safe for most celiacs but would not be for those who are on the more sensitive end of the spectrum. So, it would depend on the individual celiac and their level of sensitivity to minor amounts of gluten. That's the long and nuanced answer. The short answer is that it is a product derived from wheat and so you can be certain it will contain some residual amounts of gluten. No gluten removal process is 100% effective. So, to be absolutely certain, stay away from it. Have you tried chia seeds? Very high in fiber and quickly turns into a gel when added to water. Make sure you get seeds that are gluten free if you decide to try it.
