To All,

I was going to post this in Ennis_Tx blog about missing teeth post but it it seemed better to post it here.

I had bad teeth problems all my life ... so I is has always been an interest of mine to see what (if any thing else) caused my poor dental health.

Posterboy.  

Be leary of the Gum.  It can cause intestinal upset in some.  Probiotics and the gut biome are still being researched and are not well understood.  Even Dr. Fasano, a leading celiac expert admits this every time he lectures.    Xylitol which sweetens the Gum works because our gut bacteria can not digest this stuff.  We can not digest this stuff.    It is why it is used as a sweetener that is not supposed to add calories into your diet.  It is also dangerous for dogs!

My advice is to stick with REAL food.  This is another processed food!  Avoid most sugar (cane, beet, corn, etc), because the bacteria in our gut (and our gut starts with our mouth) feeds on sugar.  That should help prevent cavities.  

The link was a blog written by an attorney.  Okay, she graduated from UC Berkeley, but blogging about health topics is a hobby for her.

No Xylitol gum for me.. ..just when you think you have something figured out ...there's always a catch.  I guess I will have to stick my Freedent instead!

I have used the Spry gum, for a long time, although I have not used it in a few months as I am having gut issues. They also make a xylitol mouthwash. The stuff is great at moisturizing the mouth and nasel passage and is sold for such uses.

But on the mouth bacteria, I do not eat sugar, fruit, or starches. I use 3 different mouthwashes, one with a hydrogen peroxide mix. Bottom line if your concerned about bacteria in your mouth find a mouthwash that destroys them and use it after every meal and before bed.

any sort of artificial sweetener makes me crazy - like, irritable, restless, jumping out of my skin crazy.  idk why (and i don't want to know lolz that's just my personal experience)  also, food coloring.  again, i do not want to know the specific speculation, that's just how i am affected and i am sure i'm not alone.  the longer i am gluten free, i have been able to add back many foods (had oatmeal 2x this month!  i'm excited!) but the artificial stuff is never coming back into my diet.

cycling lady, she's got it right - keeping it 'real' and natural (and as unprocessed as possible!) is the safest bet :)

Asputame, Asuflame since I went gluten free years ago triggered me to go crazy and get angry. Red 40 caused behavioral issues for years but resolved as my gut healed. 
I find Xylitol in extreme moderation had no issues, and erithitol is a something I have NO issues with, I use it daily but often go a week sweet clense without it once a month.
I use Stevia and Monk Fruit powders in PURE uncut forms 1/8-1/4 tsp for most recipes replaces like a 1/2-1cup of sugar. They are natural plant powders.
I hear you on the foods back in, with my new keto enzymes...I CAN EAT MEAT, and not get the extreme vomiting, fatigue, and really bad BO anymore....given only for breakfast and stewed for hours first, BUT I have enjoyed beef for the first time in 3 years, turkey in 2 years, pork rinds for the first time in 5 years, and crab and fish are back on the menu to. I still eat in moderation but good to have them back.

Unfortunately with me, I found carbs flare my UC and my blood sugar (why I use these sugar alternatives)...rice, oatmeal, etc will never be fine. Though I did find oatmeal, corn bread, etc flavor drops and just pair with almond meal porridge and add in some miralce rice for that texture...heck fry up the miracle rice for any rice recipe.

I am not having bad breath issues (now like I once did) but I do chew gum mainly to help dry mouth issues.

So I was interested to learn my mouth biome was/could be effecting my bumper crops of cavities. I knew you mentioned your teeth issues in your blog and I thought if  I knew this information about the spry gum you mentioned .... I might of tried it when I still had more teeth left and it mattered more than it does now .... but I don't want anything in the house that would make my little ok. ..big puppy sick that he might reach inadvertently.

Bacteria either in the gut or in the case of cavities in the mouth . ....effect more than we know sometimes.

I have had friends to do gastric bypasses for their diabetes .... but it never seemed like the right answer for me.  I do prefer to find a natural answer when I can.... then I found this research about how our Gut Biome can/could be effecting my type 2 diabetes.

confirming in my mind that at least in part (though we don't know it all) that gut bacteria is/was effecting my weight negatively despite daily (sometime 3 times daily walking/exercise) the dog has  to be walked regularly right) but still I was gaining weight and why I have resisted having my stomach bypassed for my pre-diabetes.

I do find if I can keep fiber in my diet it makes a difference with my blood sugars and if I can consistently keep a good soluble fiber in my routine it helps even more.

It turns out we might not only have skinny "genes" so much but skinny "bugs" (also) at least in part.

What exactly do you eat?  I am surprised that anyone would recommend gastric bypass surgery for a Pre-diabetic.

I try and stay low carb as much as I can but I am referring to the trend (or it seemed) to be once that recommend those who had high BMI's and trending up blood sugars of 7.0sh as qualifying for a gastric bypass.

I would of been definitely diabetic at the time of 8.0+ but I have keep my A1C under 6.5 for at least the last 5+ years with diet and exercise IE ... lifestyle modifications.

But if I slip up and cheat with the Standard American Diet .... like anything fried my blood sugar counts go back up from my current pre-diabetic range too diabetic numbers.

Soo nothing fried for me . ....like chips and salsa enjoyed by many, many other "normal" people. ....loosing weight did help my blood sugar but it turned out (my weight gain) was from another one of my bad medicine reactions.  Metoprolol was causing weight gain (uncontrobally)....once I changed (at my request) to carvedilol I begin loosing weight again ...  but I have had friends who's sugars were trending up with high BMI's that got a gastric bypass preventively because it (gastric bypasses) was being passed off as the next miracle cure for diabetes.  Taking Chromium Poly dropped my avg. A1c about 2.0 whole points and I have only since been pre-diabetic of less than 6.5 or less since. as long as I stay low carb(ish) and stay away from refined foods and fried food of any kind and other high glycemic foods like juices etc.  I basically eat to my meter and let it tell me what I can and can't eat. ...so I know next time what I should leave off next time. ...much easier than having  a gastric bypass ...as some of my friends have done to control their diabetes.

Sounds like a good approach.  Eating to your meter is what I do too.  It helps identify foods that can spike your blood sugar which can vary from person to person (there is no one perfect diet).     Keep up the good work.  Lowering your carb intake is much safer than surgery in my non- medical opinion.

I found how much chromium helped my blood sugar....I use a reference meal to see if taking other Vitamins could also improve my blood sugar counts.  I used the "eat to my meter" method to also help me supplement in this way where I also found Vitamin K, Vitamin D, B-1, B-3, Magnesium, and Vanadium also helped me control my blood sugar.

I have just tried to share my success stories....from having taken the wrong forms and in the wrong ratios first by using my "blood sugar meter" to guide me when I have taken enough to positively/or negatively effected the way my body uses insulin. . . and have successfully managed my blood sugar without medicine.

Maybe this will helps someone else. .. the key is to have the same reference meal so you know how the supplement (vitamin/mineral) is working. If people want to understand more about ratios or co-nutrients see this online article first posted by Ennis_tx that explains these complex inter relationships in a nice over view form.

      Hey Julie! I was in a similar situation before my biopsy and my gastro said Tylenol was fine. Just avoid ibuprofen or anything anti-inflammatory until you're cleared. Hope your surgery goes smoothly!

      I don't see how cornstarch could alter the test results. Where did you read that?

      For pain relief I take a combination of Thiamine (Benfotiamine), Pyridoxine B 6, and Cobalamine B12.  The combination of these three vitamins has analgesic effects.  I have back pain and this really works.  The B vitamins are water soluble and easily excreted.   Hope this helps!  Keep us posted on your results!

      Welcome to the forum, @Xravith. I experienced similar symptoms before my diagnosis.  Mine were due to the loss of vitamins and minerals, essential nutrients we must get from our food.  With Celiac Disease, the intestinal lining, made up of thousands of villi, gets damaged and cannot absorb essential vitamins and minerals, especially the eight B vitamins.  The loss of Thiamine B 1 can cause muscle loss, inability to gain weight, edema (swelling), fatigue, migraines and palpitations.  Low thiamine can cause Gastrointestinal Beriberi with symptoms of nausea, abdominal pain and bloating.   Thiamine is only stored for a couple of weeks, so if you don't absorb enough from food daily, as the thiamine deficiency worsens physical symptoms gradually worsen.  If you're eating lots of carbs (like gluten containing foods usually do), you need more thiamine to process them (called high calorie malnutrition).  Thiamine works with all the other B vitamins, so if you're low in one, you're probably getting low in the others, too, and minerals like iron, magnesium, zinc, and calcium, as well as Vitamin D..  Talk to your doctor about checking for nutritional deficiencies.  Most doctors rarely recognize vitamin deficiency symptoms, especially in thiamine. Get a DNA test to see if you carry any Celiac genes.  If you do not have genetic markers for Celiac, it's probably IBS.  If you do have genetic markers for Celiac, it's probably Celiac.  I was misdiagnosed with IBS for years before my Celiac diagnosis.   Keep us posted on your progress. P. S. Deficiency in thiamine can cause false negatives on antibody tests, as can diabetes and anemia.
