So this morning I was on the train and my tummy started growling for food. My stomach has been a bit tempramental the last couple of weeks so yesterday I got a banana for breakfast which kept it nice and calm all day so I figured I'd do the same today. As I was thinking about the banana I was going to get on my way to work I started to remember one of my favorite comfort foods pre dx and the absolute irony of it. A banana sandwich!

I used to love these and when my stomach was acting up I thought this was a good treat. I kinda started laughing to myself when I thought of it this morning because well yeah the banana was great but I was eating it on 2 pieces of white bread - lol!!

Just thought it was a amusing story to share. ;)

Jillian--Thats so funny--I used to love to toast 2 slices of Pepperidge Farm White Bread, spread them with peanut butter, slice a banana and make a sandwich! Talk about setting yourself up for the day :P . I have since done this with rice bread--not too bad.

A friend of mine used to love banana sandwiches with mayonnaise. That is a disease unto itself.

I liked it with just margarine but I've heard of people eating it with peanut butter. I may have to give your new version a try tonight :D

Mayonaise completey skeeves me out. Yuck!!! lol

I use to take a banana mash it up with a tiny bit of sugar and put that on my toast. What we have been doing to ourselves for years is something when you stop and think about it. All the so called comfort foods are gone for me it seems.

You can still have that toast. The kinnikinnick white sandwich bread is a lot like peppridge farms white bread. It toasts great. A link to Kinnikinnick is below.

Me too! Honey wheat was always my favorite. Or whole wheat. I havent bought bread b/c i havent found one i love yet but i now eat this "sandwich" on frozen waffles (i like vans). Ill defrost the waffle and put peanut butter, honey and sliced banana on it -YUM!

As to the "comfort food" thing, this is the most ironic thing for me about celiacs- all i ate was whole wheat everything- bagels, bread, pretzels, EVERYTHING! I would say whole wheat comprised 85% of my diet!!!

I used to eat a huge bowl of raisin bran every morning because my doctor told me it would help me...yeah right!

My comfort food was always toast or english muffins. :rolleyes:

And when I went to the GI and told her I thought I might have Celiac Disease, she told me I didn't, it was IBS and I needed to increase my fiber intake preferably in the form of All Bran wheat cereal! Yeah right! :blink:

I was almost exactly like Stef - pre-diagnosis my body craved comfort foods that were, quite literally, poison for me. I always thought that was odd because so many people who have Celiac say that pre-diagnosis they naturally preferred gluten-free foods. Definitely not me! If I only I knew then, what I know now....

I didthe exact thing I use to eat at subway twice day just a plain sandwhich with deli meat I was killin myself!!!

Lol, it's nice to know that there are others like me. Before all of this meat veggies and fruit were to go with my gluten carb, Pasta and breads were my comfert food and dinner was usually something made with a cream of soup, and/or had a dinner bread. Although the Kinnikinnik bread is ok, it just doesn't work for my comfort food: PB & J on Wonder bread. I want one so bad my mouth is watering. :rolleyes:

I used to love peanut butter and butter on toasted whole wheat bread. It is funny that I don't even crave this stuff anymore after being gluten free for a while. I normally don't even buy gluten free bread anymore.

LOL this thread is making me laugh. I had the same "you have IBS - eat more whole wheat" thing too, but I decided to go to the specialist anyway, and I had celiac, just like I thought.

I always used to eat lots of saltine crackers when my stomach got upset - yipes, poison! Still kind of funny to me that all of the "this will make you feel better" foods were all making things worse.

If you have been consciously or unconsciously avoiding gluten because of the discomfort it produces then it is likely that your blood antibody testing for celiac disease has been rendered invalid. Valid testing requires regular consumption of generous amounts of gluten. The other strong possibility is that you have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) which shares many of the same symptoms with celiac disease but does not have the autoimmune component and thus does not damage the small bowel lining. It is 10x mor common than celiac disease. There is currently no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out. Some experts in the field believe it can be a precursor to the development of celiac disease. Having one or both of the primary genes for developing celiac disease does not imply that you will develop active celiac disease. It simply establishes the potential for it. About 40% of the population has the genetic potential but only about 1% develop active celiac disease.

      TTG blood test and total IGA tested on many occasions which have always remained normal, upper GI pain under my ribs since 2022. I had an endoscopy in 2023 which showed moderate gastritis. no biopsy’s were taken unfortunately. genetic test was positive for HLADQ2. extreme bloating after eating gluten, it’ll feel like I’ve got bricks in my stomach so uncomfortably full. the pain is like a dull ache under the upper left almost like a stitch feeling after a long walk. I am just wanting some advice has anyone here experienced gastritis with a gluten issue before? thank you

Skin, brain fog, nails, muscle tone all inproved when I started taking 600 mcg (RDA 150 - 1000 mcg) of Liquid Iodine drops. Some with dermatitis herpetiformis, Iodine exacerbates the rash.  I started at 1 drop (50 mcg) and worked up to 12 drops, but I don't have dermatitis herpetiformis.

      Thank you so much for sharing your experience and I found myself giggling with happiness as I read how your body reached such spring! And I hope that your current journey is also successful!! Definitely starting the food diary! So many amazing advices. And it’s very scary. It really hits all our soft spots as well as our confidence system. Most doctors I went thought I was underage despite being in my late 20s. Right now I look like am I twelve, but is also this body that’s taking so much, so I might as well love it too! Going to make the necessary changes and stay in this path. Thank you again! 🫶
