Foot Pain

One of my more persistant symptoms is pain in the bottom of my feet. I haven't read much about others at this forum who complain about foot pain, but there is Anne Luther's account of neuropathy in her feet at csaceliacs.org and I think another account at Clan Thompson. Does anyone else suffer from achy feet? How long does it last after going gluten-free? I've been off gluten (with some mistakes) for about 9 weeks. [ I used to love walking and hope to enjoy it again soon!

Hang in there! I have neuropathy--and had a lot of pain on the bottom of my feet. It probably took 6 months or so before it went away. Even now when I get the tingling and numbness, I don't get that pain anymore.

I was just diagnosed with neuropathy in my feet. The ball of the foot and toes have electrical impulses and numbness, but no pain. I honestly don't remember if I had pain before. I have been gluten-free for two years.

I have pain across the top of my feet and my ankles and knees always feel swollen. Not sure if this is the same kind of pain...and I don't know what neuropathy is. I will look it up. But for me I have found taking a calcium supplement with magnesium has helped a lot. I have been moving towards gluten-free for 5 months now.

I have diabetic neuropathy and also dietary neuropathy. The neurologist that I see found a B12, B1, and B6 deficiency. I have been on the B12 shots and have been taking vitamins for the B1 & 6 deficiency. I have been on the shots for about 5 months. I also started a nueropathy drug at the same time and the pain in feet and legs has lessened a great deal. I do floral design in a large craft store so I am on my feet a great deal and never would have made it through the holiday season this year if my legs and feet had not improved greatly. I used to walk but still cannot walk a lot. I am hoping that someday I will be able to do that again but for right now I am pleased that I can stand and walk as much as I do. I will have the B1 & 6 checked again soon as they may not be able to be absorbed correctly. I am not sure if shots are given but I am thinking that there must be some kind of liquid supplement. Have your doc do vitamin testing. I think that this is sometimes overlooked when one is diagnosed and since the villa is where all the vitamins and minerals are absorbed, supplements may have to be given because we cannot absorb the correct amount for everything to work right because of permanent damage or unhealed damage to the villa.

My husband Ralph was diagnosed with Celiac Disease over 5 years ago. He has severe pain bottom of his feet and ankles. His hands are always sore and stiff..of course, his fingernails are terrible looking and peel. A few of them even came off and regrew.

He gets extremely tired and is awake 5 hours sometimes even less a day. Not only that, he has severe psoriasis.

Finally found a few doctors who deals with Celiac disease in Maine. No one in my family or his realize the pain that this man has been going through.

Are there other people out there that feel the same as my husband..and now that I do have a name for my husbands problems for his feet, will look it up and see what his doctor says.

thanks

Hi! My father has been going to doctors for years with "burning feet" and test after test found nothing. He was diagnosed with neuropathy in his feet. Do you think that it is possible that all of this could be from celiac disease? Three of my kids have celiac and I am going to be tested myself soon.

It is genetic so there would be pretty good odds that he may have at least a gluten sensitivity or intolerance. Or have him go gluten-free for 3 weeks and see if there's improvement. Or is he one of those that won't do it w/o a dr's say so?

He has tried everything else so I hope he'd be willing to try this! He said he did have a blood test done that came back negative. I believe at the time he was trying to avoid yeast so therefore he was not eating breads, crackers, etc. so I'm sure that would mess up the results of the test. My sister is being evaluated for celiac also so I would have to bet that there is a pretty good chance that he probably has some form of gluten intolerance etc.

He's a tough one to convince to try it, but if the doctor suggests some more tests he's there right away!

Have a great night!

I have had this problem for a long time and in the past year the pain has gotten extremely bad in the heels of my feet. Sharp pain in the morning especially and I had to get those gel-type heel inserts for my shoes. Thank you all for sharing your symptoms and giving me hope that it will lessen. I hope to be able to walk again around the neighborhood with my lazy dog. :)

hi!! i am new to this, i tested negative on the bloodwork for celiac, and am scheduled for the biopsy in a few wks, because of gas and bloating, in which i was always gassy and bloaTED FOR years, but never knew why, thought it was just the foods i was eating, could never figure out which foods though!! . THE BIGGER PROBLEM IN MY LIFE IS ACHY FEET!! I STARTED 2 YRS AGO, AND DOCS SAID IT WAS TARSAL TUNNEL IN BOTH MY FEET, WHICH IS NOT COMMON. I STARTED WITH ACHY FEET, THEN IT WAS MORE LIKE A BURNING TINGLING FEELING, WHICH WAS TOTALLY WORSE!! GOT CORTISONE SHOTS, PHYSICAL THERAPY, ORTHODICS (WHICH WERE TOO PAINFUL TO WEAR) WHAT HAS HELPED ME A LITTLE IS ACUPUNCTURE, AND CHIROPRACTIC. but still its 2 yrs since this started, I AM ONLY 42 AND STILL CANNOT WALK AROUND THE BLOCK, I WAS ALWAYS VERY ACTIVE, UP TILL 2 YEARS AGO. i want to be able to keep up with my boys ages 7 and 9. Sometimes i make dinner sitting on a stool in my kitchen, which the stool has become a permanent fixture, so i can sit on it while doing dishes or cooking!! i always have to use a motorized ride on cart, when i go food shopping, or to the zoo, with the kids, or Halloween trick or treating! i do not have any weight problems, i am 5 ft 116lbs, and have always been!! its so weird!

My feet get unbelievably sore...nothing to see..just really tender. It feel likes the foots padding has worn away and im walking on bare bone. Also my toes and feet tingle like they coming round fron anathetic...like how your mouth feels after dental numbing...nerves are numbed.Ankle and achillies tendons are so stiff when i wake/have sat for a while that i have to manipulate them to get going again.I also seem to be palagued with hard skin on the soles of my feet too at the moment, dont know if anyone can relate to this ?I also suffet terrible bone pain in my shins and cramp in my calfs....at night/on waking and stretching out

I have always heard that when you suffer from malabnortion, your body steals from the available fat storage in your bottom and the pads of your feet.

plant sources of calcium, such as spinach, have calcium bound to oxalates, which is not good. best source of calcium is unfortunately dairy, do you tolerate dairy? fermented dairy like kefir is good and or a little hard cheese. i do eat dairy, i can only take so much dietary restriction and gluten is hard enough! but i guess some people do have bad reactions to it, so different for everyone.

i take b12, folate, b2, b6, glycine, Nac, zinc, vk2 mk4, magnesium, coq10, pqq, tmg, creatine, omega 3, molybdnem (sp) and just started vit d. quite a list i know.  I have high homocysteine (last checked it was 19, but is always high and i finally decided to do something about it) and very low vitamin d, 10. have been opposed to this supp in the past, but going to try it at 5k units a day. having a pth test on friday, which is suspect will be high. my homocysteine has come down to around 9 with 3 weeks of these supplements and expect it to go down further. i also started on estrogen/progesterone. I have osteoporosis too, so that is why the hormones.  anyway, i think all celiacs should have homocysteine checked and treated if needed (easy enough with b vit, tmg). homocysteine very bad thing to be high for a whole host of reasons. all the bad ones, heart attack , stroke, alzi, cancer..... one of the most annoying things about celiacs (and there are so many!) is the weight gain. i guess i stayed thin all those years being undiagnosed because i was under absorbing everything including calories. going gluten-free and the weight gain has been terrible, 30#, but i'm sure a lot more went into that (hip replacement - and years of hip pain leading to inactivity when i was previously very active, probably all related to celiacs, menopause) yada yada. i seemed to lose appetite control, like there was low glp, or leptin or whatever all those hormones are that tell you that you are full and to stop eating. my appetite is immense and i'm never full. i guess decades or more ( i think i have had celiacs since at least my teens - was hospitalized for abdominal pain and diarrhea for which spastic colon was eventually diagnosed and had many episodes of diarrhea/abdominal pain through my 20's. but that symptom seemed to go away and i related it to dairy much more so than gluten. Also my growth was stunted, i'm the only shorty in my family. anyway, decades of malabsorption and maldigestion led to constant hunger, at least thats my theory. then when i started absorbing normally, wham!! FAT!!!

Great advise there I agree with the aniexty part, and the aura migraine has I suffer both, I've also read some great books that have helped I'm going too look the one you mentioned up too thankyou for that, I find a camomile tea just a small one and a gentle wind down before bed has helped me too, I suffer from restless leg syndrome and nerve pain hence I don't always sleep well at the best of times , racing mind catches up I have decorated my whole house in one night in my mind before 🤣 diet changes mindset really help , although I have to say it never just disappears, I find once I came to terms with who I am I managed a lot better  , a misconception is for many to change , that means to heal but that's not always the case , understanding and finding your coping mechanisms are vital tools , it's more productive to find that because there is no failure then no pressure to become something else , it's ok to be sad it's ok to not sleep , it's ok to worry , just try to see it has a journey not a task 🤗

I agree there I've tryed this myself to prove I can't eat gluten or lactose and it sets me back for about a month till I have to go back to being very strict to settle again

You may also need to supplement with B12 as this vitamin is also involved in iron assimilation and is often deficient in long-term undiagnosed celiac disease.
