OKay sooo like a while bkac I posted that I was gonna try going dairy free... and I realy ment to try it, even tried a few brands of soy milk, but UGH how can you call this stuff milk? Yuck!

I have dramiticly reduced milk in my deit though, stopped drinking latte's and have americano's instead now, etc. However I still have milk in my ceral, and then real ice cream at night and some cheese and yogurt at lunch.

I am starting to think that I feel fine when I eat cheese and yougurt, but I think if I drink alot of milk (like a full cup) or if I put more then a little milk in my cearel I feel sick/gassy/pian. So I am thinking LACTOSE?

If so can I just take some Lactate and have my icecream and ceral? Im not well educated on this lactose stuff...

Vincent--It could be a lactose problem. My 21 year old son is lactose intolerant. He can eat cheese and yogurt with no problem. He needs to use Lactaid with milk and ice cream. You have nothing to lose--why don't you try it the next time you have milk.

Vincent,

Do you guys have Natrel down there? If it is a lactose problem, the lactose free Natrel tastes awesome! You can't taste the difference from real milk. It doesn't have that yucky taste the other lactose free milks have.

The lactose vs. dairy allergy is a tough one. We thought our daughter was just lactose intolerant, and the lactaid seemed to work a bit. After the tests came back she was allergic to milk, not lactose intolerant. It is harder to eliminate dairy than gluten!!! There just isn't a substitute for cheese. Oh, she does enjoy the "Better Than Cream Cheese" from Trader Joes. She won't drink the soy milk, but will put it on cereal no problem. (She tested negative for soy allergy.) My daughter is in 9th grade and did a science fair project testing lactaid in milk. She couldn't stand drinking lactaid milk because it was so sweet, so she would swallow two lactaid ultras before consuming milk. Anyway, in her project she tested whether lactaid worked as well for low fat milk as for regular milk. She crushed a lactaid into a cup of skim, 1%, 2% and whole milk, then tested each with a glucose strip. (She was very scientific and tested multiple times.) She found that the lactaid worked really well in whole milk and not at all in skim. It worked a bit in the lower fat milk - graphed pretty consistently. Sooo...we're not sure how this translates into how lactaid works in the stomach, or on other dairy products, but we sure thought it was interesting.

I have no issues with cultured milk products (cheese, yogurt) and some other dairy products (pudding, ice cream), but I have a bit of a problem with say, drinking a whole glass of milk. It's made me kind of queasy since I was a teenager, so I usually just use the lactaid milk, I've never used the tablets. It works fine for me!

I tested negative for milk allergy by blood and by scratch test, so I think my intolerance is a Celiac related thing. I noticed I tolerate milk and stuff a bit better now...

True, I'm not that sure about ice cream either, but it's hard to tell the difference any more! If it's only a little bit of ice cream, it's ok, but I can't eat the whole carton at a sitting like I'd like to do :P It's also hard not to eat the whole tub of kozy shack

I attribute the discomfort to both of those as just eating too much of it in one sitting :P I'm going to have to try the lactaid tablets, my discomfort has never really been enough to warrant it. It's nothing like, say, a gluten reaction.

You do sound like me, so the lactaid stuff should probably help :)

Chelsea and Vincent--you both sound like my son--try the tablets! ;)

In my opinion, soy is NOT good for you. There's a thread here started by mssillyacscrewed where it's being discussed right now, actually.

We've been dairy (mostly) free for a year almost. It's been fine finding substitutes. We really like the 365 Organic rice milks from Wholefoods. Currently, they're repackaging the products, so they're mostly all off the shelves until the new packaging comes in. So, instead we're using Almond milks. My kids like the vanilla and the chocolate, of course! I use plain rice milks in mashed potatoes, vanilla on cerials and for drinking- along with chocolate. We don't have ice cream, but get italian ices and frozen stuff like that.

My kids don't miss dairy at all. Though, we do use mozzerella for our pizza because we couldn't find an acceptable cheese alternative. Let me know if you need to find a substitute for something dairy. I've been doing it for nearly a year now and it wasn't difficult to transition away from dairy like I thought it would be.

Oh, and as for calcium intake.... don't sweat it. My kids and I eat a large, dark green spinach salad (not the kind with bacon and eggs, just the leaves and some carrots and grapes and apples) every night with dinner.

I read that dinosaurs had giant bones supporting their enormous weight and how do you think they developed those big, strong healthy bones? Consuming cow milk???? NO! Green, leafy veggies.

There are great articles on the web about how the protein in dairy products actually block the absorption of calcium. And those sites are NOT all sponsered by PETA types.. Some even say, go eat a steak, but don't drink the milk! You have to get your calcium from a non protein source. Most of the world doesn't consume dairy products like the U.S. does. We have the largest percentage of bone breaks, hip fractures and osteoporosis in the world and are the largest consumers of dairy in the world. We need a greener source of calcium!

Ok. That's my pre-coffee ramble on dairy. I really shouldn't post until I've had my daily half a cup!

Not worried about calcum, cause of ostprosisi stuffus I already take the max 1200mg Calcium daily. (600mg twice daily)

Im also not concerned if soy is good or bad, cuase I dont drink stuff that tastes like chalk :D

The only things I care about dairy for realy is Cheese on pizza, pasta, and etc, my daily yogurt, and milk in my cearal. I have just about cut all other dariy out... but NOT ready to give up my bryers all natural icecream! :D

Amen, though I think it tastes more like hay than chalk. :)

For me, as far as the soy goes, I'm in the "one crisis at a time" mode. I'll get the gluten stuff figured out, then I'll worry about everything else. Especially since I'm feeling good. I don't get much soy, though I do enjoy endame every now and again.

How much are lactaid pills, anyway?

Dairy was pretty hard, but not impossible. I've always been a cream-in-coffee drinker and it took me a few weeks to adjust to black coffee. But now it tastes fine to me. I miss cheese the most I suppose, but I just changed my eating 100%. Instead of cereal, I have very yummy sausages I can microwave to heat up. Or eggs. I eat fruit instead of dairy products for snacks and desserts. I don't try to substitute around it with soy or almond milk. Sometimes it is just easier to change entirely than try to find a good substitute.

Hey, didn't they just release a report that said the calcium in pills isn't absorbed? I think they did.

seriously, the almond milk is good in coffee. I like the hazelnut flavor the best. The chocolate is good too.

At my CVS, the large box --60 chewables is around $16.00. There are a couple of smaller size boxes, too.

BTW--I am completely dairy free--2 years now, pre gluten free. The info. is from my son's experiences with this.

Try the Lactaid - I know it works for some people but not for me or my daughter so we've eliminated dairy altogether. We use Veggie Shreds mozzarella flavor for things like tacos. It does contain soy but no dairy. Rice Slices - american flavor - are good. Both are made by Galaxy Foods and I've found them in my local supermarket (green ziplock type bag). For ice cream, we've been eating the soy based ones - Soy Delicious is good (not all flavors are gluten free) or sorbets or italian ices. I have never liked milk but my daughter uses rice milk in cereal with no problem and I cook with rice milk - I haven't noticed any difference in texture or taste.

I really dig my rice milks. Granted, I don't drink them straight, I stopped doing that with milk years ago, but it is good on my cereal or even chocolate, or in recipes...

UGH

Well I went to kroger, grabbed there generic version (was buy one get one!!), good thing I look at the box, big bold letteres CONTIANS WHEAT. Nothing in the ingredients would have tripped me off! Ah well, so 32 pills for 8.99 for the "real"thing. Grab'd some hersy's syrup and headed home.

Pour cup of milk with the syrup and drank it with two of the pills (said to take with first bite so I did did..).

Now I gasy/sick! This is why I dont normaly _drink_ milk. :(

oh my this is the wrost I have felt since going gluten-free... ugh... :(

I've thought my celiac disease son has a casein allergy too. When he was born, his poop had strings of blood in it. The doc said "casein" allergy. I heard this can cause malabsorption too. He's 7 now, but his gastro doc says if there's no blood in his poop, he's outgrown it. Why don't I believe him?

Anyway, the Lactaid milk he drinks for lactose intolerance is different because it's sweet. I can tolerate it only with cereal, which makes the cereal tastes even better. He thought it was weird at first, but now he's used to it and will not drink regular milk (which tastes "weird" to him now).

denipark Newbie

Vincent, If it was lowfat or skim milk the lactaid just doesn't work on it. If it was whole milk, and you still are obviously sick, then I'd really look hard at whether you have a dairy allergy.

Whole milk, but I did not react with the skin allergy test at least. Just bought some almond milk. I am gonna try it in my cearl tommorow, skip the ice cream/etc for a day or 3 then try a glass of lactaid milk stuff. I guess dunno what else to do.

It's too bad you don't have Natrel where you are. The stuff is lactose free (their lactose free version I am talking about, of course!) and tastes EXACTLY like regular milk, not a hint of that sweet taste the other stuff has.......

Assuming its even lactose thats a problem.... I just dunno any more... I would swear this is gluten, cept it happened with int minutes of drinking milk, but this is the worst I have flet in a long time.

Scott, I am mostly asymptomatic. I was diagnosed based on high antibodies, low ferritin (3) and low vitamin D (10). I wasn't able to get in for the biopsy until 3 months after the blood test came back. I was supposed to keep eating gluten during this time. Well why would I continue doing something that I know to be harmful for 3 more months to just get this test? So I did quit gluten and had the biopsy. It was negative for celiacs. I continued gluten free with iron supps and my ferritin came back up to a reasonable, but not great level of around 30-35.  Could there be something else going on? Is there any reason why my antibodies would be high (>80) with a negative biopsy? could me intestines have healed that quickly (3 months)?  I'm having a hard time staying gluten free because I am asymptomatic and i'm wondering about that biopsy. I do have the celiacs gene, and all of the antibody tests have always come back high. I recently had them tested again. Still very high. I am gluten free mostly, but not totally. I will occasionally eat something with gluten, but try to keep to a minimum. It's really hard when the immediate consequences are nil.  with high antibodies, the gene, but a negative biopsy (after 3 months strict gluten-free), do i really have celiacs? please say no. lol. i think i know the answer.  Asa

I have had a long year of testing unfortunately still not diagnosed , although one thing they definitely agree I'm gluten intolerant, the thing for me I have severe back troubles they wouldnt perform the tests and I couldn't have a full MRI because I'm allergic to the solution , we tryed believe me  I tryed lol , another was to have another blood test after consuming gluten but it makes me so bad I tryed it for only a week, and because I have a trapped sciatic nerve when I get bad bowels it sets that off terribly so I just take it on myself now , I eat a gluten free diet , I'm the best I've ever been , and if I slip I know it so for me i have my own diagnosis  and I act accordingly, sometimes it's not so straight forward for some of us , for the first time in years I can plan to go out , and I have been absorbing my food better , running to the toilet has become occasionally now instead of all the time , i hope you find a solution 🤗

I was undiagnosed for decades. My ferritin when checked in 2003 was 3. It never went above 10 in the next 20 years. I was just told to "take iron". I finally requested the TTgIgA test in 2023 when I was well and truly done with the chronic fatigue and feeling awful. My numbers were off the charts on the whole panel.  they offered me an endoscopic biopsy 3 months later, but that i would need to continue eating gluten for it to be accurate. so i quit eating gluten and my intestine had healed by the time i had the biopsy (i'm guessing??). Why else would my TTgIgA be so high if not celiacs? Anyway, your ferritin will rise as your intestine heals and take HEME iron (brand 4 arrows). I took 20mg of this with vitamin c and lactoferrin and my ferritin went up, now sits around 35.  you will feel dramatically better getting your ferritin up, and you can do it orally with the right supplements. I wouldn't get an infusion, you will get as good or better results taking heme iron/vc/lf.

Scott, I agree with everything you said except the term "false negative". It should be a "true negative" just plain negative. I actually looked up true/false negative/positive as it pertains to testing. The term "false negative" would be correct if you are positive (have anti-bodies) and the test did not pick them up. That would be a problem with the "test" itself. If you were gluten-free and got tested, you more than likely would test "true" negative or just negative. This means that the gluten-free diet is working and no anti-bodies should be present. I know it sounds confusing and if you don't agree feel free to respond.
    • SilkieFairy
I realized it is actually important to get an official diagnosis because then insurance can cover bone density testing and other lab work to see if any further damage has been done because of it. Also, if hospitalized for whatever reason, I have the right to gluten-free food if I am officially celiac. I guess it gives me some legal protections. Plus, I have 4 kids, and I really want to know. If I really do have it then they may have increased risk.
