What is the Crucible? :huh:

I guess you're a product of the Cali school system, eh? My sister and brother are, and they wouldn't have a clue what the crucible is :)

It's a play about the Salem Witch Trials by Arthur Miller, required reading in high school in many states. Anyway, these girls go crazy accusing all of these people of witchcraft and goad eachother into seeing things that aren't there during hearings and trials after they themselves were involved in dancing in the forest and calling spirits.

I actually thought it was a TV show but was wondering why I'd never haerd of it. :lol:

I went to catholic schools...maybe thats why we didnt have to read it...or maybe its a CA thing like you said.

Sounds like the Cruible woulda been kind of interesting though.

Rachel--thanx for the date info. I never knew you could eat them fresh :ph34r: The only ones I have ever seen are the dried ones like Sunmaid. For the record, I can't eat dried fruit either. I thought they would be a good "sweet" treat, but I find they give me really bad gas and strange bowel movements. I finally realized dried fruit was the culprit when I discovered Lara Bars (which I love). :angry: I'm glad your friend was there for you last night. I understand how you can get so frusterated and discouraged about this whole thing that it makes you cry--and it's good to get that all out once in a while. Hope you feel more "up" today :)

Yesterday I happened to be looking in the cabinets...I have no idea why since I cant have anything in there! I always do this though....as if I was a normal person just casually looking for something to eat....YEAH RIGHT.

Well....I found 2 ziplock baggies of those crackers I was eating! I forgot I had put some in baggies and now that I know they are there....its very tempting. For some reason I cant bring myself to throw stuff away cuz you never know...a miracle could happen. Tomorrow I could wake up totally able to eat ANYTHING I want. :lol:

Oh yeah...and like if that really happened would I really be running to the cabinet to get those plain rice crackers anyway....NOT! I'd be on my way to the store for some chicken n a biskit crackers with some cheese spread!

Wish I didn't understand any of this so well! :lol::o:ph34r:

Interesting thing related to the Crucible -- there are historians who've made a really compelling argument that the hysteria over the Salem witch trials probably had to do with a contaminated grain supply -- the theory is that their grain (rye) was infested with ergot -- a fungus (I think?) -- which made the whole town have psychological symptoms like "distemper" and hallucinations.

I had my sorbet with banana last night. I started sneezing a hour or so later but don't know if it's my seasonal allergies, the new dove soap (cucumber and I forget :P ), or the sorbet. I usually have my sneezing attacks in the morning. The doctor I went to for allergy test said that many people who have hay fever or allergy to grass pollen do better when they eliminate the grass grains from there diet for that period of time. Of course I had to remove them for all of the time. I'm hoping my seasonal allergies will get better. Can't (don't like) to take allergy meds unless I absolutely have to since I'm breastfeeding. I usually stay in most of the summer which is a bummer. At least we have air conditioning so I don't have to leave the windows open and be sneezing all the more. :blink:

Same here Jersey. The gas is better today and my bloating went down some too. I dont recall ever eating dried fruit before....except raisins. Its like everytime I find something I really like....I cant have it....which is where alot of my frusteration came from yesterday. The dried fruit was soooo good. Your mom is right, but I know where you're coming from ;) I think because there is so little that we can safely have, when we find something good, we tend to over-do. I know I do! I know I thought dates would be the perfect fix for a sweet tooth (which I have)--but of course not, it would be too easy <_<

Yeah...the figs I ate were just like candy. :D

They even had what looked like sugar all over it. They are organic and unsulphered so from what I read this is what happens when fruit dries naturally. I dunno but it was goooood!

For the record, the true red-skinned new potatoes that are grown in Florida, Texas, Arizona, and California don't arrive in market until February and are of superb quality. Any red-skinned potato sold during the months of November, December, and January are probably old potatoes that were grown in the North and are not the real McCoy. Even some sold in February, March, and April, when real new potatoes are available, could be old red-skinned potatoes masquerading as new. Since the real thing and the impostors look very much alike, the consumer will have to depend solely on the integrity of the retail market to get a fair shake.

The red-fleshed potatoes are the huckleberry (red skin and flesh) and the blossom (pinkish-red skin and flesh). They haven't had time to convert their sugar fully into starch.

It is the starch... that's why I'm okay with the Red skinned potato! :)

YEA!!! I'm glad you figured it out :D Now, I'm going to look for red-skinned potatoes and see if they make a difference for me! B)

I got my rash right when I switched to that Dove green-tea-and-cucumber soap. Loved the soap, but my skin didn't. Hope you don't have the same reaction!

Oh, I hope not. Oh well, I can always pitch them and get the sensitive skin ones. That's what I got for the kids. Otherwise I'll switch to the unscented or something. It's a bar, but only has like 4 ingredients. My skin is sensitive, and I do better with non-detergent soaps.

I'll check that out when I go to Wild Oats (sometime between today and Sunday). I prefer simpler things and don't like all the chemicals they put in regular soaps which is why I switched to Jason in the first place. I'll also check out the Tea Tree by Jason. My daughter had taken to being a little itchy on her legs and her HSP is gone so I think maybe the wheat in the Jason Rosewater or Chamomile may have been bothering her. I just double checked the ingredients...the body washes don't have wheat so that couldn't have been it. The hand washes by Jason have wheat.

Yea--I had a feeling you were talking about the hand washes--I almost bought one thinking it didn't have wheat--like the shower wash. :blink: I can't go shopping anymore without my reading glasses :D

I have only been eating red skinned potatoes the last 3-4 years just for that fact, that they are the least starchy. I seem to do well with them, and if you can find them in your area Terra brand chips makes a Red Bliss Potato Chip. Very yummy, and last I checked gluten-free.

Dried fruit is not my friend :( I don't know if it is the concentrated sugar, or if there is fermentation involved or what, and I am talking the stuff that is sulfite and additive free, it just does a number on my stomach. Oh how I love medjool dates! I love to split them in half, remove the pit and then fill the center with a dollop of almond butter. Yummo! That would be my dessert if only I could tolerate it. I don't need candy, cookies, or cake, just my date concoction. I love figs too, and dried apricots. How can something so pure and healthy be something we can't eat? I fail to ever make that connection. I think I might try out the fresh figs, they are greenish on the outside and pinkish on the inside if I recall correctly.

I am really bothered by the crackers, Edward &Sons and cc. I myself have gone through 2 packages in the last month. If I keep glutening myself by cc how can I ever heal? I started looking into some of the products that I have used regularly and a couple others say no "added" wheat, and give the spiel about "processed in a facility with wheat and blah, blah, blah"..... you can't really even trust the gluten free stuff.

I guess I am debbie the downer tonight :(:(:(

Sorry Rachel you were sad last night, oh the mountains and valleys of auto-immune illnesses...it's great that you have such a support system. I hope everyone has a great support system because without it it makes all of these challenges more challenging.

I am really feeling terrible. Had to cancel my teeth cleaning this morning because I was wheezing so much and my hands shook so bad from the Prednisone. She said it will be Sept or Oct before they can be done. I am suppose to call the beginning of July and see if there is a cancellation. I have now lost weight and I am down to 129 pounds and I don't want it there. But, there is so little that I can eat that is fattning. And right now I am just not hungry. My husband suggested last night (he is in Northern NV for a Bike rally) that the allergies have probably gone into Asthmatic Bronchitis. So, last night I started my 10 day supply of antibiotics and I hope this all improves in a couple of days. Before when my food allergies have flared up (but certainly never this bad and for this long), I have sometimes gone into Asmatic Bronchitis. I guess I am having a lot of dumb moments as I completely forgot that. Since I have gone gluten-free, I have only had one episode and that required the emergency room. And yes, I am taking two acidolpholis with each antibiotic I take (one in the am and one in the pm). I am prone to thrush with these and I don't want to gargle with that stuff again. I am eating as much chocolate chip cookies (soy, dairy and corn free) as I can. But, I never thought I would see the day that I would not like to see another one. But, it is the only high calories I am taking in. I made up a grocery list, but I feel to awful to go to the store. This is a real bummer. I complained about my quality of life before with the exhaustion, but at least I could eat some things I liked. I bought this ketchup at Wild Oats and it has no corn or soy or anything in it I can't have. Two nights ago, I used it and it tastes like tomato paste, which I have never liked. So, I was thinking about adding a little sugar water to it and make it more palatable. I also started a alternative medical treatment for my allergies as I am that desperate. I WON'T say what the treatment is until I know whether it works or not. She said it could take up to 10 treatments. I have heard only good things about this women and I have to try something. I can not live on prednisone forever. So, aren't you sorry you asked how everyone was tonight. :blink:

Well I'm a little better tonight...but still not recovered from the massive amounts of dried fruit I consumed. Oh...I do remember that while I was on the candida diet and doing all that research it was always stressed that dried fruit should always be avoided with a leaky gut and/or candida. I'm not sure whats so bad about it but my body is definately telling me NO...on the dried fruit.

Yeah...I dont know what I would do w/out my support system.

Last night my friend was telling me that I need to get out and do more things even though I cant drink or eat out. She said I could still go and drink water. I never do anything cuz I just dont wanna deal with it and I'm scared a little I think. I've been keeping to myself for awhile now and guess I got used to it. I promised her I would at least try to do something fun.

Soooo instead of turning down my next invite I decided I'd go next time....to whatever it is. In a few minutes I'm headed out the door to go to a strip club with a group of guys from work. :lol::huh::unsure::o

Should be interesting....I said I'd go to my next invite and here I go. :D

Hope your day goes better tomorrow. This board has been pretty quiet today. I was having a kinda down night last night as well. What is it with us, is it the weather (that's the typical excuse up here). :lol: Time to cheer up, the sun is out (just came out after a torrential downpour here). Well, I think I'm doing better for one because the little one only decided to wake up once last night and my older ones decided to let me sleep in. He used to sleep through but had recently started waking up twice. I didn't get up until 9:00. :ph34r: Also it's the weekend and my hubby is home. :D:P:rolleyes: He always brightens my day.

Can you eat avocados, coconut oil, any nuts, ice cream (dairy, soy, rice).

I have been scouring the recipes section and ran across a scrumptious sounding dessert. Divine Chocolate Torte. I had gone off chocolate to carob because of the theobromine and tannin in chocolate but the chips have soy lecithin in them so I'm back to chocolate and enjoy life chips.

I am a former vegan so if you have any diet challenges with dairy I may be able to find a recipe for you. Many of them have soy which and don't and can't do anymore and don't recommend anymore. But if you can do soy then I'll be glad to post some recipes.

I am really feeling terrible.

I hope things look better for you in the morning. Can you eat hummous? It's chickpeas mashed up with sesame paste, garlic, lemon juice, and olive oil--very nutritious and high-fat. You can eat it on gluten-free bread or toast, or rice crackers, or just spoon it into your mouth. It makes a pretty good vegie dip, too.

I wonder if making your own ketchup might work. I found this on the Internet:

Heinz Ketchup

1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste

1/2 cup light corn syrup

1/2 cup white vinegar

1/4 cup water

1 tablespoon granulated sugar

1 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon onion powder

1/8 teaspoon garlic powder

Combine all ingredients in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Whisk until smooth. When mixture comes to a boil, reduce heat and slimmer for 20 minutes, stirring often. Remove pan from heat and cover until cool.

Chill and store in a covered container.

I bet you could substitute brown sugar for the corn syrup.

Then there's always chicken soup, especially if it's made from a Kosher chicken. They're more expensive, but I SWEAR they taste better. Failing a Kosher chicken, though, the next best option is to get a gluten-free rotisserie chicken (I remember reading that Costco chickens are gluten-free, as are Boston Market ones), eat the meat, and throw the bones AND skin into the crockpot with onins, carrots, a parsnip, a sweet potato, dill, and parseley. Throw it in before work (chop the vegies the night before), come home, and dinner is ready. If you want to gain weight, don't skim the fat off the soup--eat it.

My grandma swore up and down that chicken soup can cure anything and everything. Hope you get a good night's sleep and feel better in the am.

Thank you for the well wishes. I can't have soy, dairy (casein), corn or peanuts. That is why I am losing weight again, When the asthma went besurk, I cleaned out the pantry of everything I was eating that had even the smallest amount. Last week, I had boiled potatoes and had been much better for a couple of days and so I put my Canola marg. on a few. There is soy way down the line on the list. Then my whole system went into the sky and I have been there daily and getting worse each day. That is why my husband thinks it has gone into Asthmatic Broncitis. I feel tonight like a rock is sitting on my chest. Right now, it really doesn't matter as all the meds I have been taking have stopped any appetite I usually have. I have only eaten 1/2 of a baked chicken breast and I was full. And of course one choc chip cookie :blink: .

Fiddle-Faddle. Where do I buy chickpeas and sesame paste? I have always wondered what hummous was. Do you have a recipe for the amounts for each? I do have one cracker that is gluten-free and without my other allergens. I can't eat my bread as it has soy in it. I printed out the ketchup and this information. Thank you. I was going to the store and get some salmon to grill as I really love that and I know that is high in calories. I hope I feel better tomorrow so I can do that.

I have a butter recipe posted on the dairy substitute topic. I don't know how to insert those.

I also have the following recipes for hummus.

Hey! Hey! Hummus

2 c cooked garbonzo beans

1/4 c Lemon Juice

1/3 c sesame tahini (joyva brand is best)

2 tsp garlic powder OR 2 cloves fresh

1 tsp salt

1/2 c water

Blend all ingredients thoroughly.

If you are using a conventional blender and not a stronger machine like a Bosch or VitaMix, blend recipe half at a time.

Stop blender and use spatula to stir, if necessary.

Continue to blend until a creamy consistency.

Chill.

Hummus

2 c cooked garbanzos

1/3 c fresh lemon juice

1/4 c tahini

2 cloves garlic

1 tsp salt

1/2 tsp onion powder

1/4 c water or broth from garbanzos

cumin to taste (opt)

fresh parsley or mint, to taste (opt)

Process all ingredients in a blender until very smooth and creamy. Add a little more water if necessary. Use as a spread or dip.

Hummus Tahini

2 cups cooked garbanzos (1-15oz can)

1/2 c tahini

1/3 c lemon juice

1 clove garlic or 1/2 tsp garlic powder

salt to taste (1/2 to 1 tsp)

1/4 tsp dill weed

1/2 to 1 cup water (or juice from canned garbanzos)

Blend all together in blender, adding water in the amount needed to the thickness desired. Blend until smooth, about 1 minute.

Yes dried fruit definite no for leay gut and candida - its really hard to digest - its concentrated and lacks the water that ripe fruit does- I know I can't take it at all- which sucks because it is good. I hope you're feeling better. Good that your getting out- I know how you feel though I can't go out for drinks or food and it makes it really hard. I find myself just avoiding going out. Its easier in one way because I don't get put in weird situations and avoid temptation but in another way its makes me feel like I am missing out on so much.

Hi everyone.

Hugs to Armetta and Julie!

My allergist told me to stay away from dried fruits too...I always thought it was because of the mold factor, but I could be wrong. I also did an anti-candida diet, which stressed no dried fruits.

I'm feeling pretty good...the last few days my allergies have really kicked up...it's been hard to breathe, but generally I'm feeling okay. Until yesterday. When I proceded to fall off my mini trampoline as I was GETTING OFF the darned thing...smashed the front of my ankle. I have a nice lump and it feels really bruised although the skin is only slightly discolored. I think I should have known better than to try to jump on that thing...I've been kind of dizzy again the last few days. Oh well.

I added an avatar...I may change it later...I have another one I like better from about 4 years ago, but this one is more recent (taken in March). I was at a fitness convention with a group of girls I met online and we pulled someone aside to take our picture...just as he was about to take the picture he yelled "SAY SEX" which just totally made me laugh so hard (he didn't seem the type interested in sex, which is why it was so funny).

      Raising you vitamin D will increase absorption of calcium automatically without supplementation of calcium.  A high PTH can be caused by low D causing poor calcium absorption; not insuffient calcium intake.  With low D your body is not absorbing calcium from your food so it steals it from your bones.  Heart has priority over bone. I've been taking 10,000 IU D3 a day since 2015.  My doctor says to continue. To fix my lactose intolerance, lots of lactobacillus from yogurts, and brine fermented pickles and saurkraut and olives.  We lose much of our ability to make lactase endogenosly with maturity but a healthy colony of lactobacillus in our gut excretes lactase in exchange for room and board. The milk protein in grass fed milk does not bother me. It tastes like the milk I grew up on.  If I drink commercial milk I get heartburn at night. Some experts estimate that 90% of us do not eat Adequite Intake of choline.  Beef and eggs are the principle source. Iodine deficiency is a growing concern.  I take 600 mcg a day of Liquid Iodine.  It and NAC have accelerated my healing all over.  Virtually blind in my right eye after starting antihypertensive medication and vision is slowly coming back.  I had to cut out starches because they drove my glucose up into the 200+ range.  I replaced them with Red Bull for the glucose intake with the vitamins, minerals and Taurine needed to process through the mitochodria Krebs Cycle to create ATP.  Went from A1c 13 down to 7.9.  Work in progress. Also take B1,B2,B3,B5,B6. Liquid Iodine, Phosphatidyl Choline, Q10, Selenium, D and DHEA.     Choline supplemented as phosphatidylcholine decreases fasting and postmethionine-loading plasma homocysteine concentrations in healthy men +

      @catnapt, Wheat germ has very little gluten in it.  Gluten is  the carbohydrate storage protein, what the flour is made from, the fluffy part.  Just like with beans, there's the baby plant that will germinate  ("germ"-inate) if sprouted, and the bean part is the carbohydrate storage protein.   Wheat germ is the baby plant inside a kernel of wheat, and bran is the protective covering of the kernel.   Little to no gluten there.   Large amounts of lectins are in wheat germ and can cause digestive upsets, but not enough Gluten to provoke antibody production in the small intestines. Luckily you still have time to do a proper gluten challenge (10 grams of gluten per day for a minimum of two weeks) before your next appointment when you can be retested.

      Hello, @asaT, I'm curious to know whether you are taking other B vitamins like Thiamine B1 and Niacin B3.  Malabsorption in Celiac disease affects all the water soluble B vitamins and Vitamin C.  Thiamine and Niacin are required to produce energy for all the homocysteine lowering reactions provided by Folate, Cobalamine and Pyridoxine.   Weight gain with a voracious appetite is something I experienced while malnourished.  It's symptomatic of Thiamine B1 deficiency.   Conversely, some people with thiamine deficiency lose their appetite altogether, and suffer from anorexia.  At different periods on my lifelong journey, I suffered this, too.   When the body doesn't have sufficient thiamine to turn food, especially carbohydrates, into energy (for growth and repair), the body rations what little thiamine it has available, and turns the carbs into fat, and stores it mostly in the abdomen.  Consuming a high carbohydrate diet requires additional thiamine to process the carbs into energy.  Simple carbohydrates (sugar, white rice, etc.) don't contain thiamine, so the body easily depletes its stores of Thiamine processing the carbs into fat.  The digestive system communicates with the brain to keep eating in order to consume more thiamine and other nutrients it's not absorbing.   One can have a subclinical thiamine insufficiency for years.  A twenty percent increase in dietary thiamine causes an eighty percent increase in brain function, so the symptoms can wax and wane mysteriously.  Symptoms of Thiamine insufficiency include stunted growth, chronic fatigue, and Gastrointestinal Beriberi (diarrhea, abdominal pain), heart attack, Alzheimer's, stroke, and cancer.   Thiamine improves bone turnover.  Thiamine insufficiency can also affect the thyroid.  The thyroid is important in bone metabolism.  The thyroid also influences hormones, like estrogen and progesterone, and menopause.  Vitamin D, at optimal levels, can act as a hormone and can influence the thyroid, as well as being important to bone health, and regulating the immune system.  Vitamin A is important to bone health, too, and is necessary for intestinal health, as well.   I don't do dairy because I react to Casein, the protein in dairy that resembles gluten and causes a reaction the same as if I'd been exposed to gluten, including high tTg IgA.  I found adding mineral water containing calcium and other minerals helpful in increasing my calcium intake.   Malabsorption of Celiac affects all the vitamins and minerals.  I do hope you'll talk to your doctor and dietician about supplementing all eight B vitamins and the four fat soluble vitamins because they all work together interconnectedly.

      Hi Jane: You may want to try the D3 I now take. I have reactions to fillers and many additives. Sports Research, it is based in the USA and I have had no bad reactions with this brand. The D3 does have coconut oil but it is non GMO, it is Gluten free, Soy free, Soybean free and Safflower oil free.  I have a cupboard full of supplements that did not agree with me -  I just keep trying and have finally settled on Sports Research. I take NAKA Women's Multi full spectrum, and have not felt sick after taking 2 capsules per day -  it is a Canadian company. I buy both from Amazon. I wish you well in your searching, I know how discouraging it all is. Florence.

      highly unlikely  NOTHING and I mean NOTHING else has ever caused me these kinds of symptoms I have no problem with dates, they are a large part of my diet In fact, I eat a very high fiber, very high vegetable and bean diet and have for many years now. It's considered a whole foods plant based or plant forward diet (I do now eat some lean ground turkey but not much) I was off dairy for years but recently had to add back plain yogurt to meet calcium needs that I am not allowed to get from supplements (I have not had any problem with the yogurt)   I eat almost no processed foods. I don't eat out. almost everything I eat, I cook myself I am going to keep a food diary but to be honest, I already know that it's wheat products and also barley that are the problem, which is why I gradually stopped eating and buying them. When I was eating them, like back in early 2024, when I was in the middle of moving and ate out (always had bread or toast or rolls or a sub or pizza) I felt terrible but at that time was so busy and exhausted that I never stopped to think it was the food. Once I was in my new place, I continued to have bread from time to time and had such horrible joint pain that I was preparing for 2 total knee replacements as well as one hip! The surgery could not go forward as I was (and still am) actively losing calcium from my bones. That problem has yet to be properly diagnosed and treated   anyway over time I realized that I felt better when I stopped eating bread. Back at least 3 yrs ago I noticed that regular pasta made me sick so I switched to brown rice pasta and even though it costs a lot more, I really like it.   so gradually I just stopped buying and eating foods with gluten. I stopped getting raisin bran when I was constipated because it made me bloated and it didn't help the constipation any more (used to be a sure bet that it would in the past)   I made cookies and brownies using beans and rolled oats and dates and tahini and I LOVE them and have zero issues eating those I eat 1 or more cans of beans per day easily can eat a pound of broccoli - no problem! Brussels sprouts the same thing.   so yeh it's bread and related foods that are clearly the problem  there is zero doubt in my mind
