I agree with Rachel that a lot of intolerances to foods other than gluten arent from the foods themselves but the chemicals sprayed on them or leached out from the soil in the form of fertilizer, or lime, etc. Espically plants, I have problems with plant foods. All the healthy stuff.

Funnier yet, I even have sensitivies to vitamins and minerals.

I bought a bottle of Bolthourse farms mango juice called C-boost, "immune support" from the store, and it contains like 1200% vitamin C, 200% zinc, 100% vitamin A, 640 mg of potassium and right now after drinking it, (it was good tho) I have the worst headache, more worse than if I ate gluten. It has no added sugar, but 36g carbs per serving. So its comming from fruit sugar. Ohh it says 30g sugar. too.

I cant really tolerate juices and smoothies, or sorbet, anything sugary. But I think it has more to do with the fact

it also has a lot of potassium in it, my jaw pain gets worse when i eat high in potassium like banannas, and other potassium rich foods.

This may sound weird but they make me get cotton mouth, really dried up.

So, I react to a lot of vegitables and fruit juices. Which kind of confuses me, but not really because mainly I get cotton mouth from these foods. Initally I get a lot of saliva, then after 20 min I dry up and get cotton mouth, and the headache insues.

Im pretty dry right now.

does anyone know about potassium?

need your prayers!

Okay, Christine, you have my prayers. I'm trying to catch up on new posts, and thought I'd answer yours before going on. If someone far more knowledgeable than I has already addressed your issues, oh well.

I don't know beans about potassium, but the cotton mouth and headaches you mention are exactly how I react to msg. ?????????? It's so confusing!:blink::blink:

I was able to get comfortable enough last night to get a little sleep... thanks to Cissi's prayers and Rinne's suggestion of the ice pack.

My Dingo buddy... you are doing a great job... and if we didn't feel all emotions good and bad we wouldn't be human... we wouldn't be living.... you are always in my prayers with the rest of you and I hope you feel a little better and stronger today!

To lighten today up a little.... I HAVE to tell you all this......this morning Tony woke up with wet goop all over and on him and freaked out, he thought my insides were coming out.... all I had last night was a package of spinach so I used this instead of my ice pack... and this was a frozen cardboard box and I fell asleep with it on my tummy and of course rolled around during my sleep... well the spinach thawed and oozed out of the corners

But now I have to wash all my bed sheets <_<

ROFLMAO :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Oh, Celia! That's the funniest thing I've heard in years!!!!!

SUSAN, you are so clever! Dogs and geese, together at last!:lol::lol:

Who asked for pictures so we can see each other to help remember who posted what? I want to put my picture up, but I'm stumped by computer talk. What do I do first? Help!

CELIA & RINNE, I'm glad you're feeling better today.

OK - First, click on your own name on your posts. This will bring up your profile. At the bottom of the page, there are 3 underlined options. Click Avatar Options (the one in the middle). Then you can either pick a base image (from the site), or you can upload a picture from your computer. To do one from your computer, click "browse" and a windows screen will pop up, and then you choose a picture from your own files. Once you do that, click "update avatar" and it should show up. If you get an error message that your picture is too big, you'll have to edit the picture in another program to get it small enough.

Sorry if that was confusing.

Wow, that is just a really great thing to do! We have a Rachelville Town Hero! :D

Thanks, Chelsea! Not confusing at all. It makes sense to me now. I looked through my picture file, and not one picture of myself. I'll have dh take one on Tuesday after I get my hair done. :P

Wait a moment--if Julie is Queen, then we don't NEED a King. Maybe a Crown Prince (don't all good fairy tales have a Prince?), but definitely not a King. No offense, guys, but look what happens to the world when men have political power. If women were in charge, we'd never have the mess you see in the Middle East!

We don't need a king, he would out rank the queen by his very title. The husband/sig. other of the queen is called the Prince Consort! ;)

Sorry it took me so long to get here today, but there were things to tend to. I see we have also spilled over into another thread. Not only do the geese tend to migrate, but apparently so does our whole darn town.

Rachel -- Glad tp see you can eat dairy again, and going at it with gusto from the looks of it.

Susan -- Nice work with the photo shop...the girls look good with the geese.

Vincent -- A heart felt thank you for every one with small children who need help.

All -- I will get a pic of me on here as soon as I can. Not at my home computer right now.

Talk to you all soon.

Cissie,

I get cotton mouth from MSG too....it sucks. I got it really bad when I ate all those sweet potatoes and yams a few weeks back. Nothing else causes my mouth to get dry like that....except maybe gluten....so when it happens I know its from msg. For me I dont get the cotton mouth unless I've had ALOT and I'm usually pretty sick at that point. It goes away after a day or two though cuz by then I've stopped eating whatever caused it in the first place.

Before I ever went gluten-free and still ate all the normal processed food and stuff with msg my mouth was like cotton every freakin day...It was horrible. Alot of people get cotton mouth from gluten so I figured thats probably what had caused it back then but now I'm wondering if it was always a symptom of msg and not gluten at all.

Rachel -- Glad tp see you can eat dairy again, and going at it with gusto from the looks of it.

Yeah...I've had like 5 pints in 4 days now. I only have one pint left in the freezer so gotta go back to the store for more. Pints are kind of small though so I dont feel like I'm overdoing it. I'm small but I've always eaten larger portions than the average person. I'm hoping all this ice cream will put some more weight on me. :D

I still cant believe I'm eating ice cream though!!! OMG... :o

It seriously feels like a miracle! I think if it was gonna mess me up it would have happened already. If I ate 5 yams I'd be in some seious pain right now....even 5 carrots would be enough to cause misery. I dont even want to think about what 5 avocados would do to me.

5 pints of ice cream and still feeling good??? Maybe I really am on the right track with this....maybe this thread title wasnt so "bogus" afterall! :D

I really cant eat cheese though. :(

Vincent (and his wife) have been AMAZING! From what I know he's offered to grocery shop for her, he's been the one to get the info. to people on the board when she was unable to access a computer, he's offered to drive them when their car broke down....he has been sooo supportive and generous. He truelly is a hero...and I'm sure he's taken a load off of Tanya's mind more than once throughout this stressful time.

Yup...we really do have a HERO in Rachelville!!! :D

OK, Mister Vincent-what are you doing to defy your cardio's orders?! We will have to place you under arrest. Someone call in that cop! You are a hero, though in our book and nothing you say will change our minds!

Christine--I had extremely low potassium levels when I was at my sickest from chronic D, but excess potassium-I am not sure what causes that. I am wondering what your magnesium levels are since the two work together. Do you have irregular heartbeats?

Chelseapenguin-I hope you are feeling better today-this gluten challenge maybe had one good outcome-your mom is taking this a little more seriously.

The goal of my new diet is to reduce histamine in my body...I'm pretty sure I have an overload of histamine which is why I react pretty easily to foods that contain alot of it.

I dont think anyone else here has this problem but I'll post some signs and symptoms for anyone who might be interested. Who knows...maybe it will help a "lurker". :)

Some Signs of High Histamine

The more of the following that apply to you the more likely you are to be a high-histamine type.

High histamine types tend to:

• Cry easily <----------not until I got sick

• Hear their pulse in their head on the pillow at night <----------I've experienced this my whole life

• Itch and scratch a lot <-----yup

• Have seasonal allergies <-------nope

• Have a low pain threshold with regular headaches and other aches and pains <----------yup

• Produce excessive mucous <---------yup

• Feel nauseous easily <----------yup

• Have a high sex drive and easy orgasm <----------no comment

• Experience inner tension or ‘driven’ feelings <----------yeah....I've always had this "feeling"

• Have episodes of ‘blank mind’ <---------yup

• Suffer with depression and sometimes suicidal thoughts <-----really bad before diet changes

• Have abnormal fears, compulsions, rituals <-------nope

• Be a light sleeper or experience severe insomnia <--------I'm a light sleeper

Appear to tolerate a lot of alcohol or drugs <------Hmmm...maybe this is why I could always drink and drink and barely get a buzz going!! :o How can a 105 lb. woman be able to drink the same as a 200 lb. man??

• Have a fast metabolism with high body temperature. <---------big time until they nuked my thyroid

• Be of lean build with little body hair <---------I'm lean but I have normal amounts of body hair

• Have a large nose or ears, long fingers and toes (and often a longer second toe than the first) <------nope...all my parts are normal size

• Have excellent teeth <--------yup

Well nothing here totally sticks out to me except the alcohol tolerance, hearing my pulse in my head, fast metabolism and inner tension... because those have been life-long symptoms. I have most of the symptoms listed but most obvious of all is I feel like I would be perfectly healthy and normal if I didnt feel like everything I ate caused a histamine reaction throughout my body. Its been constant for more than 3 years now. :(

Hopefully my new diet and the antihistimine (Keto) will have some positive results if done together. :)

Robin - do you have the original paint from the door? it will be old, so won't match completely, but if you have the paint, you can thin it (works better if it's oil-based paint) and apply a few light coats, letting each dry for a full day.....this can sometimes work....

or, extreme home makeover!!

Rachel, I TOTALLY agree! I often got cotton mouth and couldn't figure out why. But when I got cotten mouth PLUS a migraine I could always trace back and see that it was caused by msg. At the time, I had no idea that msg was hidden under other names, so that's why I couldn't make the msg-cotton mouth connection when I didn't have the headache. I hope I'm making sense. There's a storm coming, so I'm trying to finish this in a hurry.

Rachel, I have had a problem with high histamine for a long time. I had severe migraines and also histamine headaches. I take Zyrtec (so does Zack) and it helps alot. The migraines and histamine headaches have disappeared since going gluten-free, but cheese and msg really were major triggers. I lived with hives, rashes, hay fever, sinus problems, etc. I am still, as many of us are, searching for clues as to what the root problem is, and quite frankly I feel like I am in a rat's maze sometimes.

Susan, I do have some of the paint the builder left --good idea. It probably will be dried up-it is in the attic. I like your geese picture with the girls!! :) poo on your teacher, I mean, spinach. :)

This histimine thing is interesting. I have taken Claritan for 12 years, only stopping last year for a while after I was diagnosed. It helps me feel better overall--I swear it used to help calm my stomach during the years I didn't know what was really wrong.

I have to tell you all--I've been off the filtered water almost 2 weeks now, and the heart palpitations that I've had since last fall have stopped!! I'm so happy :D I had an echocardiogram done on my heart and had to wear a Holter Monitor for 24 hours a while back because no one could figure out what was causing the palps. My GP had finally chalked it up to menopause--but I didn't agree. They were almost constant and were driving me nuts! Usually when they happen in menopause, they come with hot flashes. Mine were there all the time. I even started a thread about it back last fall. I also didn't end up thinking they were gluten related, because they've gone on so long. It's clear that they had to do with the coconut/filter sensitivity. There is no other explanation as to why in the last 2 weeks, my digestion and the palps have improved so much. :o

So, essentially all of the nutrition in the food we eat is absorbed through the villous lining of the small bowel. This is the section of the intestinal track that is damaged by celiac disease. This villous lining is composed of billions of finger-like projections that create a huge amount of surface area for absorbing nutrients. For the celiac person, when gluten is consumed, it triggers an autoimmune reaction in this area which, of course, generates inflammation. The antibodies connected with this inflammation is what the celiac blood tests are designed to detect but this inflammation, over time, wears down the finger-like projections of the villous lining. Of course, when this proceeds for an extended period of time, greatly reduces the absorption efficiency of the villous lining and often results in many and various nutrient deficiency-related health issues. Classic examples would be osteoporosis and iron deficiency. But there are many more. Low D3 levels is a well-known celiac-caused nutritional deficiency. So is low B12. All the B vitamins in fact. Magnesium, zinc, etc.  Celiac disease can also cause liver inflammation. You mention elevated ALP levels. Elevated liver enzymes over a period of 13 years was what led to my celiac diagnosis. Within three months of going gluten free my liver enzymes normalized. I had elevated AST and ALT. The development of sensitivities to other food proteins is very common in the celiac population. Most common cross reactive foods are dairy and oats but eggs, soy and corn are also relatively common offenders. Lactose intolerance is also common in the celiac population because of damage to the SB lining.  Eggs when they are scrambled or fried give me a gut ache. But when I poach them, they do not. The steam and heat of poaching causes a hydrolysis process that alters the protein in the egg. They don't bother me in baked goods either so I assume the same process is at work. I bought a plastic poacher on Amazon to make poaching very easy. All this to say that many of the issues you describe could be caused by celiac disease.

thank you so much for your detailed and extremely helpful reply!! I can say with absolute certainty that the less gluten containing products I've eaten over the past several years, the better I've felt.   I wasn't avoiding gluten, I was avoiding refined grains (and most processed foods) as well as anything that made me feel bad when I ate it. It's the same reason I gave up dairy and eggs- they make me feel ill.  I do have a bit of a sugar addiction lol so a lot of times I wasn't sure if it was the refined grains that I was eating - or the sugar. So from time to time I might have a cookie or something but I've learned how to make wonderful cookies and golden brownies with BEANS!! and no refined sugar - I use date paste instead. Pizza made me so ill- but I thought it was probably the cheese. I gave up pizza and haven't missed it. the one time I tried a slice I felt so bad I knew I'd never touch it again. I stopped eating wheat pasta at least 3 yrs ago- just didn't feel well after eating it. I tried chick pea pasta and a few others and discovered I like the brown rice pasta. I still don't eat a lot of pasta but it's nice for a change when I want something easy. TBH over the years I've wondered sometimes if I might be gluten intolerant but really believed it was not possible for me to have celiac disease. NOW I need to know for sure- because I'm in the middle of a long process of trying to find out why I have a high parathyroid level (NOT the thyroid- but rather the 4 glands that control the calcium balance in your body) I have had a hard time getting my vit D level up, my serum calcium has run on the low side of normal for many years... and now I am losing calcium from my bones and excreting it in my urine (some sort of renal calcium leak) Also have a high ALP since 2014. And now rapidly worsening bone density.  I still do not have a firm diagnosis. Could be secondary HPT (but secondary to what? we need to know) It could be early primary HPT. I am spilling calcium in my urine but is that caused by the high parathyroid hormone or is it the reason my PTH is high>? there are multiple feedback loops for this condition.    so I will keep eating the bread and some wheat germ that does not seem to bother me too much (it hasn't got enough gluten to use just wheat germ)    but I'm curious- if you don't have a strong reaction to a product- like me and wheat germ- does that mean it's ok to eat or is it still causing harm even if you don't have any obvious symptoms? I guess what you are saying about silent celiac makes it likely that you can have no symptoms and still have the harm... but geez! you'd think they'd come up with a way to test for this that didn't require you to consume something that makes you sick! I worry about the complications I've been reading about- different kinds of cancers etc. also wondering- are there degrees of celiac disease?  is there any correlation between symptoms and the amnt of damage to your intestines? I also need a firm diagnosis because I have an identical twin sister ... so if I have celiac, she has it too- or at least the genetic make up for having it. I did have a VERY major stress to my body in 2014-2016 time frame .. lost 50lbs in a short period of time and had severe symptoms from acute protracted withdrawal off an SSRI drug (that I'd been given an unethically high dose of, by a dr who has since lost his license)  Going off the drug was a good thing and in many ways my health improved dramatically- just losing 50lbs was helpful but I also went  off almost a dozen different medications, totally changed my diet and have been doing pretty well except for the past 3-4 yrs when the symptoms related to the parathyroid issue cropped up. It is likely that I had low vit D for some time and that caused me a lot of symptoms. The endo now tells me that low vit D can be caused by celiac disease so I need to know for sure! thank you for all that great and useful information!!!

Welcome, @catnapt! The most recent guidelines are the daily consumption of a minimum of 10g of gluten (about the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread) for a minimum of two weeks. But if possible stretching that out even more would enhance the chances of getting valid test results. These guidelines are for those who have been eating gluten free for a significant amount of time. It's called the "gluten challenge".  Yes, you can develop celiac disease at any stage of life. There is a genetic component but also a stress trigger that is needed to activate the celiac genes. About 30-40% of the general population possesses the genetic potential to develop celiac disease but only about 1% of the general population actually develop celiac disease. For most with the potential, the triggering stress event doesn't happen. It can be many things but often it is a viral infection. Having said that, it is also the case that many, many people who eventually are diagnosed with celiac disease probably experienced the actual onset years before. Many celiacs are of the "silent" type, meaning that symptoms are largely missing or very minor and get overlooked until damage to the small bowel lining becomes advanced or they develop iron deficiency anemia or some other medical problem associated with celiac disease. Many, many are never diagnosed or are diagnosed later in life because they did not experience classic symptoms. And many physicians are only looking for classic symptoms. We now know that there are over 200 symptoms/medical problems associated with celiac disease but many docs are only looking for things like boating, gas, diarrhea. I certainly understand your concerns about not wanting to damage your body by taking on a gluten challenge. Your other option is to totally commit to gluten free eating and see if your symptoms improve. It can take two years or more for complete healing of the small bowel lining once going gluten free but usually people experience significant improvement well before then. If their is significant improvement in your symptoms when going seriously gluten free, then you likely have your answer. You would either have celiac disease or NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity).

after several years of issues with a para-gland issue, my endo has decided it's a good idea for me to be tested for celiac disease. I am 70 yrs old and stunned to learn that you can get celiac this late in life. I have just gradually stopped eating most foods that contain gluten over the past several years- they just make me feel ill- although I attributed it to other things like bread spiking blood sugar- or to the things I ate *with* the bread or crackers etc   I went to a party in Nov and ate a LOT of a vegan roast made with vital wheat gluten- as well as stuffing, rolls and pie crust... and OMG I was so sick! the pain, the bloating, the gas, the nausea... I didn't think it would ever end (but it did) and I was ready to go the ER but it finally subsided.   I mentioned this to my endo and now she wants me to be tested for celiac after 2 weeks of being on gluten foods. She has kind of flip flopped on how much gluten I should eat, telling me that if the symptoms are severe I can stop. I am eating 2-3 thin slices of bread per day (or english muffins) and wow- it does make me feel awful. But not as bad as when I ate that massive amnt of vital wheat gluten. so I will continue on if I have to... but what bothers me is - if it IS celiac, it seems stupid for lack of a better word, to intentionally cause more damage to my body... but I am also worried, on the other hand, that this is not a long enough challenge to make the blood work results valid.   can you give me any insight into this please?   thank you

The biopsy looks for damage to the mucosal lining of the small bowel from the inflammation caused by celiac disease when gluten is ingested. Once you remove gluten from the diet, inflammation subsides and the mucosal lining begins to heal.
