Susan...all three guys in R-Ville are married...don't you think we look at calanders enough as it is?

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

excellent....

morning all, note that I am not in church today because I FEEL ICKY....too many Nuggets.....ugh....feeling woozy and slightly vomitous......combined w/ the Lays....oh, help me......(it's not that bad actually, just being dramatic)....

but very tired today.....slept in late, ugh....slow start...possibly not the energy to be funny today, but that's okay, easing into Monday with our science lessons....

The bruising - - I bruise like crazy now. they take a while. But the cuts, Cecile, I don't know!

The weight gain.....one thing - the ONLY thing - I like about being Celiac was that I was about a size 2 or 4 my whole life. Gained 15 pounds immediately after removing gluten, lost 5 and am holding steady.....but can't fit into last summer's clothes.:angry::angry: But I finally understand how one has to watch one's weight.

too tired to remember what I wanted to address.....OH I KNOW, what is this about Chelsea and Matthew Mc? DID SHE SEE HIM??? did I miss this? because I posted many pages back that I was in fact on set with him in a movie (Ed TV) as an extra years ago.....what a hoot that was...the casting agency called me at 11 pm April 1st (months after the audition), to be in San Francisco at 8 a.m the next day (a two-hour drive) with five wardrobe changes as I was going to be a paparazzi up on scaffolding (here's where my climbing experience came in handy ;) ).....I kept thinking it was one of two male friends playing an April Fool's joke on me....but no, it was true....I called my mom at 11:15 (she also lived in Monterey at the time) and said...what should I do???....there's work tomorrow, and an appointment.....and she said, snap out of it, IT"S MATTHEW, you are going! HOly Lord, I got one hour's sleep and got in the car at 4:30 a.m.......my on-set time wasn't until 5 pm....got home at midnight....but what a hoot!! (no, I'm not in the movie)....but I let out an audible gasp and clutched my friend's arm the first moment I ever saw Matthew on screen years and years ago.....he'll be big, I told her, and he is MY TRUE LOVE......

could I BE any more off topic? but telling that story kind of got me a little riled up.....more coffee and I should be okay.....

Rinne, glad you're with us today...

Robbin, what a lovely day you have planned! enjoy. soak up the green for all of us, I need to get to the mountains quite soon, used to be up there every single weekend, very depressed if I had to stay in town, my how life has changed......hopefully when God sends my southern man he'll have a CABIN......

Everybody else, gotta get organized here and try to wake up...... -_--_--_- wonderful Sunday to you all....see you all later, I am sure!

Ya know . . . . as a "non-gastro" celiac, I'm very happy for you guys when you gain weight . . . . but it takes most of the sympathy/empathy I can muster to be happy for you rather than to be so envious I can't STAND IT. I have gained 100# since all this stuff started 3 years ago . . . 100 lbs. -- THAT IS A WHOLE PERSON. I was lean, in fantastic shape . . . and BOOM. Everything just went to He**.

So, I'm very happy for you that you gained weight . . . . I'm very happy for you that you gained weight . . . . I'm very happy for you that you gained weight . . . (saying this with very clenched teeth, but smiling . . . . ) :D

Trying to stay happy in Rachelville . . . . .

Sorry Lynne and Chels,

Next time I post regarding weight gain I'll try to do so in a less enthusiastic manner. I'll leave out the WOOHOO's....how's that. :)

Weird how we can be at opposite ends. Chels...if I was doing a gluten challenge....there would be nothing left of me...not a good thing at all. I think I'd rather be a "gainer".

Cecile - - - I do the same thing (or did) - - - have your vitamin K levels checked, your B12 levels checked, don't know what else they checked that was down but I'll look . . . . turns out that I have a "form" of Von Willebrand's disease, which, from what I've read, is common with celiacs. Something about Vitamin K metabolism in the body and the ability to absorb (and THIS from a non-gastro celiac . . . ) Had to have factor VIII given to me during my thyroidectomy so that I wouldn't bleed out . . . I also "hypertrophic" (Keloid) scar . . . but Silicone gel sheeting -- and now its easy availability -- takes that away.

Karen --- just wanted to make sure everyone knew that the wheelchair thing was A-OK!!! Got your back, my friend -- always. You are one of the angels walking the earth. Even in Rachelville.

Rinne -- if you have leaky gut, have you tried BioEnzymes -- or something like that -- it is what one of the pro football teams uses for pain control . . . I'll contact the pharmacist from whom I purchase them and find out the exact name, AND if they're gluten-free.

Susie -- I'm so sorry you're feeling bad. I'm telling ya, those Hershey nuggets . . . there is some question about gluten, isnt' there, with Hershey's????? Watch yourself, my southun kin . . . Lynnie

Robbin -- Virginia -- my husband's aunt -- is now MY aunt (She is Aunt Helen -- my Aunt Helen, my mother's favorite, died before I was 2; oddly, I still remember her. At age 41, I FINALLY got my Aunt Helen back, and she's fantastic!!!). She lives in Virginia, and when we went there, it was the most beautiful place I believe I've seen so far. Her house has a room which is all windows . . . and looks out to the most beautiful mountains you've seen. Awe inspiring. So yes, you are DEFINITELY a southerner (esp. with ancestor Henry Clay) and Virginia is close enough . . . . next time we're there, I'll find out where you are, and we'll clink mint julep glasses!!!!! (rimmed with Altoids, because after the revelation that the Rachelville trophy is actually the Kentucky Derby trophy, all mint juleps in Rachelville have to be rimmed with Altoids.) Also . .. . Dave's family calls her "Aunt Hellion" -- she's a little on the "spicy" side!!!

Chelsea -- I agree, "Oh my, isn't that niiiiice" . . . . (since you finked me out about the joke, at least you and I can ENJOY it!!!!!). I gained all this weight prior to becoming gluten-free . . . maybe that was the problem . . . or the thyroid . . . . or the brain . . . . who knows!!! But even gluten-free, the pounds are coming off VERY slowly.

Hmmm.....I've been MUCH too serious for Rachelville . . . must find my silliness today . . . .

Happy Sunday to all . . . . . Love, Lynne (PS -- I can do other things . . . just going to admit them slowly -- I have "volunteer" syndrome . . . Also . . . . I can be a cop, although I'm a little overweight, but definitely voluptuous because of it! I don't need to 2 legs to kick someone's A**.)

Rachel -- I really am happy for you that you've gained weight. Struggling to lose weight, I'd be happy for someone who lost. With you struggling to GAIN weight, I really am happy for you. That must be difficult trying to keep weight on. That happened to me when I was weight lifting . . . my metabolism was so fast, that I had to eat 18/7 just to maintain my weight. It was a struggle. I'm happy for you, my scrapbooking hero!!!!!

Ok you outdoorsy guys and gals.

Mitch, Talitha and Micah got stung this morning while out picking blackberries on the hill out back. Can't identify what type of bee it was, but it is primarily black and somewhat fat like a bumble bee. Closest thing I could find online was a carpenter bee and they are not aggressive. Micah got stung first and came in and then Talitha and Mitch. Mitch had touched a bramble to pick more berries and a couple bees came out and stung him and Talitha. Micah's sting doesn't look the same, just like a typical bee sting. Mitch and Talitha have a dark red spot with some swelling around. Mitch has more swelling. Mitch got stung on the arm, Talitha on the forehead and Micah on the hand. Anyone familiar with bee varieties or other stinging insects that look like bees?

Wet mud, a wet tobacco paste, or a meat tenderizer paste. With meat tenderizer, the papain enzyme tends to destroy the poison. Watch the one that turned purple . . . my son (for whatever reason) gets cellulitis with EVERY sting he gets . . . but the purple ones . . . INSTANT infection. (sorry to be a bummer). Hope they're feeling MUCH better. (Benadryl -- oral and topical -- helps, too) . . . hugs to all of you, Lynne

morning Lynnie - - the good thing about you, no matter HOW you're getting around or not getting around sometimes :( is that you've kept your sense of humour - - something we have in spades in R-ville!

Andrea - - poor babies - - yes, pack with mud I think...and watch them - have they been stung before?

still trying to wake up..... <_<<_<<_<

AndreaB Contributor

We have clay around here, unfortunately. I had used baking soda for a few minutes but read that that as well as mud and meat tenderizer were ineffective. Any thoughts or past experience anyone?

Susie -- Hey -- given that this thing could have gone to my brainstem if not caught in time, I know that I'm lucky to be alive. Seriously. Every day is a gift, and I am soooooo grateful for that. With that in mind, who COULDN'T keep their sense of humor, eh???? (had to say eh . . . Karen taught me it, and I'm using it whenever I can!!!) Love, Lynnie

With regared to the stings, we just used to put them all together -- baking soda, tobacco, meat tenderizer . . . ACTUALLY -- I just remembered -- Caladryl lotion or cream. It's Calamine combined with Benadryl. Made it feel MUCH better -- combined with ice packs -- real ice packs -- crushed ice in a plastic bag covered with a wet towel -- for 15 minutes on, then off for an hour. Continue that throughout the day (yeah, right -- with KIDS????) but try it as best you can . . . sometimes an ace wrap or the self-sticking rolled bandages help keep the ice pack on during the "TAKE IT OFF" period . . . .

Andrea - - poor babies - - yes, pack with mud I think...and watch them - have they been stung before?

Susan,

Talitha and Micah got stung two years ago because Talitha was throwing dirt at bees congregated on the side of the house. Don't remember it hurting as much as this one with her anyway. They seem to be ok. Micah isn't having any problem, and Talitha's swelling went down. Mitch's swelling has gone down, just the pain and the redness is dissipating. We used ice packs which was recommended on another site that I read today.

MEGAN UPDATE

SUNDAY, JULY 30, 2006 11:48 AM, CDT

Megan had a really good night and rested well until about 5 am, then needed more pain medicine. Her fevers are staying low, around 99-101. That is a good sign. At times her temp has even been normal! She sat up in bed and played some this morning. She still needs the oxygen, but doesn't seem to be quite as dependent on it as she was. All of this is moving in the right direction. Praise God!

Jarod and I were able to sleep some last night too, which we both needed.

Thanks again for all the prayers. It's just watching and waiting now until the fevers are gone and she can come off the oxygen.

I still don't understand the Altoids, :( .

And Cecile, googly moogly, a little blush, a little shadow does wonders.

Carla, perhaps we can work together on an event, I'm the Community Events person. The FIRST ANNUAL RACHELVILLE _________________.

Great idea! The First Annual Rachelville Altoids cook-off. What recipes can you use Altoids in???

You'll have to PM one of us for the Altoids story. I'd suggest Karen since she's the official Altoids rep. But you can tell which of us know the whole story ... Lynne might be the funniest.

Lynne's husband is as straight as Burt Reynolds and his mustache :)

Um, I was going to say something else funny, and totally forgot what it was.

Don't worry, your gluten challenge will be over soon and your brain will come back from vacation then.

Excuse me. Gay, don't think so. Never in this life-time . What I said, and bless his heart, mis-understood, for anyone under the age of 67,especially female, would not understand.

(sigh) I'm so far behind, you guys will have already moved to Rachelville before I even finish reading today's posts! (And I'm still on yesterday's--my, my, my, you guys have been busy!)

What are your specialties. I know you play flute. Alison is music teacher...you could help her or help Patti and I with school, or anything else that you love to do.

We need all the musicians we can get! Whoever heard of an orchestra with only one musician? And the Rachelville Orchestra will be able to handle anything from Bach to Monkees to (fill in blank) with ease, and will never never NEVER play boring music or screachy scratchy music or concerts that are too long or concerts that are too loud.

Tickets will always be free, but the musicians will never have to worry that they won't get paid because of a generous grant from Gluten, Inc., who owes us all big-time for the amount of time spent on our butts (where instead of listening to great music we listened to the toilet flush). Gluten, Inc., will also supply costumes appropriate to whatever era the music is from (costumes for the musicians AND for the audience so that we can ALL really get into the feel of it).

Not with me, but when I bruise or skin or scrape skin, it takes months go heal and the color to subside.

This is what happens to me, too. Not the hives, I only get that from honey (seriously).

Susan..... :(:( Sorry you feel so awful. I don't eat regular chocolate because they all have soy lecithin in them. I'm soy intolerant. I buy the enjoy life chocolate chips which are pretty good. Just have some of those and add your own nuts. I have the chips with slivered almonds and coconut.

I can't participate in the weight gain/loss subject. I was not your typical gluten intolerant. I'll never know if I was celiac and I won't go through a challenge to try a negative biopsy. I'm wondering if Micah would actually have celiac since he has two celiac genes and had mild malabsorption. Any thoughts on that? I can tell when I get glutened now though....even cross contamination like those yummy, but dangerous, kettle potato chips.

Trying to stay happy in Rachelville . . . . .

I am thinking that we need some single men in Rachelville, you know to try the whole altoids thing, to look at, or whatever we want to do with them :D

Me too, I can't fit into my clothes anymore! It's a good thing because I was way to thin but it leaves me without a thing to wear, except I did have that man ask me if I was pregnant, so maybe it's not such a good thing.

Just got home from Sonoma County, had a really wonderful time :D:D:D

It seems a lot has happened in Rachelville

I really like the idea of the t-shirts!

Honey I'm home :lol::lol::lol:

CarlaB Enthusiast

Tavi, I lost 15 pounds when I was really sick (I've been mildly sick my whole life, sometimes more than others), so the 10 pound gain makes it so my clothes fit again!! I really don't need the extra 5! So, I had the opposite problem, my clothes looked like they were still on the hanger when I was wearing them. Had trouble keeping my pants up.

So, essentially all of the nutrition in the food we eat is absorbed through the villous lining of the small bowel. This is the section of the intestinal track that is damaged by celiac disease. This villous lining is composed of billions of finger-like projections that create a huge amount of surface area for absorbing nutrients. For the celiac person, when gluten is consumed, it triggers an autoimmune reaction in this area which, of course, generates inflammation. The antibodies connected with this inflammation is what the celiac blood tests are designed to detect but this inflammation, over time, wears down the finger-like projections of the villous lining. Of course, when this proceeds for an extended period of time, greatly reduces the absorption efficiency of the villous lining and often results in many and various nutrient deficiency-related health issues. Classic examples would be osteoporosis and iron deficiency. But there are many more. Low D3 levels is a well-known celiac-caused nutritional deficiency. So is low B12. All the B vitamins in fact. Magnesium, zinc, etc.  Celiac disease can also cause liver inflammation. You mention elevated ALP levels. Elevated liver enzymes over a period of 13 years was what led to my celiac diagnosis. Within three months of going gluten free my liver enzymes normalized. I had elevated AST and ALT. The development of sensitivities to other food proteins is very common in the celiac population. Most common cross reactive foods are dairy and oats but eggs, soy and corn are also relatively common offenders. Lactose intolerance is also common in the celiac population because of damage to the SB lining.  Eggs when they are scrambled or fried give me a gut ache. But when I poach them, they do not. The steam and heat of poaching causes a hydrolysis process that alters the protein in the egg. They don't bother me in baked goods either so I assume the same process is at work. I bought a plastic poacher on Amazon to make poaching very easy. All this to say that many of the issues you describe could be caused by celiac disease.

thank you so much for your detailed and extremely helpful reply!! I can say with absolute certainty that the less gluten containing products I've eaten over the past several years, the better I've felt.   I wasn't avoiding gluten, I was avoiding refined grains (and most processed foods) as well as anything that made me feel bad when I ate it. It's the same reason I gave up dairy and eggs- they make me feel ill.  I do have a bit of a sugar addiction lol so a lot of times I wasn't sure if it was the refined grains that I was eating - or the sugar. So from time to time I might have a cookie or something but I've learned how to make wonderful cookies and golden brownies with BEANS!! and no refined sugar - I use date paste instead. Pizza made me so ill- but I thought it was probably the cheese. I gave up pizza and haven't missed it. the one time I tried a slice I felt so bad I knew I'd never touch it again. I stopped eating wheat pasta at least 3 yrs ago- just didn't feel well after eating it. I tried chick pea pasta and a few others and discovered I like the brown rice pasta. I still don't eat a lot of pasta but it's nice for a change when I want something easy. TBH over the years I've wondered sometimes if I might be gluten intolerant but really believed it was not possible for me to have celiac disease. NOW I need to know for sure- because I'm in the middle of a long process of trying to find out why I have a high parathyroid level (NOT the thyroid- but rather the 4 glands that control the calcium balance in your body) I have had a hard time getting my vit D level up, my serum calcium has run on the low side of normal for many years... and now I am losing calcium from my bones and excreting it in my urine (some sort of renal calcium leak) Also have a high ALP since 2014. And now rapidly worsening bone density.  I still do not have a firm diagnosis. Could be secondary HPT (but secondary to what? we need to know) It could be early primary HPT. I am spilling calcium in my urine but is that caused by the high parathyroid hormone or is it the reason my PTH is high>? there are multiple feedback loops for this condition.    so I will keep eating the bread and some wheat germ that does not seem to bother me too much (it hasn't got enough gluten to use just wheat germ)    but I'm curious- if you don't have a strong reaction to a product- like me and wheat germ- does that mean it's ok to eat or is it still causing harm even if you don't have any obvious symptoms? I guess what you are saying about silent celiac makes it likely that you can have no symptoms and still have the harm... but geez! you'd think they'd come up with a way to test for this that didn't require you to consume something that makes you sick! I worry about the complications I've been reading about- different kinds of cancers etc. also wondering- are there degrees of celiac disease?  is there any correlation between symptoms and the amnt of damage to your intestines? I also need a firm diagnosis because I have an identical twin sister ... so if I have celiac, she has it too- or at least the genetic make up for having it. I did have a VERY major stress to my body in 2014-2016 time frame .. lost 50lbs in a short period of time and had severe symptoms from acute protracted withdrawal off an SSRI drug (that I'd been given an unethically high dose of, by a dr who has since lost his license)  Going off the drug was a good thing and in many ways my health improved dramatically- just losing 50lbs was helpful but I also went  off almost a dozen different medications, totally changed my diet and have been doing pretty well except for the past 3-4 yrs when the symptoms related to the parathyroid issue cropped up. It is likely that I had low vit D for some time and that caused me a lot of symptoms. The endo now tells me that low vit D can be caused by celiac disease so I need to know for sure! thank you for all that great and useful information!!!

Welcome, @catnapt! The most recent guidelines are the daily consumption of a minimum of 10g of gluten (about the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread) for a minimum of two weeks. But if possible stretching that out even more would enhance the chances of getting valid test results. These guidelines are for those who have been eating gluten free for a significant amount of time. It's called the "gluten challenge".  Yes, you can develop celiac disease at any stage of life. There is a genetic component but also a stress trigger that is needed to activate the celiac genes. About 30-40% of the general population possesses the genetic potential to develop celiac disease but only about 1% of the general population actually develop celiac disease. For most with the potential, the triggering stress event doesn't happen. It can be many things but often it is a viral infection. Having said that, it is also the case that many, many people who eventually are diagnosed with celiac disease probably experienced the actual onset years before. Many celiacs are of the "silent" type, meaning that symptoms are largely missing or very minor and get overlooked until damage to the small bowel lining becomes advanced or they develop iron deficiency anemia or some other medical problem associated with celiac disease. Many, many are never diagnosed or are diagnosed later in life because they did not experience classic symptoms. And many physicians are only looking for classic symptoms. We now know that there are over 200 symptoms/medical problems associated with celiac disease but many docs are only looking for things like boating, gas, diarrhea. I certainly understand your concerns about not wanting to damage your body by taking on a gluten challenge. Your other option is to totally commit to gluten free eating and see if your symptoms improve. It can take two years or more for complete healing of the small bowel lining once going gluten free but usually people experience significant improvement well before then. If their is significant improvement in your symptoms when going seriously gluten free, then you likely have your answer. You would either have celiac disease or NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity).

after several years of issues with a para-gland issue, my endo has decided it's a good idea for me to be tested for celiac disease. I am 70 yrs old and stunned to learn that you can get celiac this late in life. I have just gradually stopped eating most foods that contain gluten over the past several years- they just make me feel ill- although I attributed it to other things like bread spiking blood sugar- or to the things I ate *with* the bread or crackers etc   I went to a party in Nov and ate a LOT of a vegan roast made with vital wheat gluten- as well as stuffing, rolls and pie crust... and OMG I was so sick! the pain, the bloating, the gas, the nausea... I didn't think it would ever end (but it did) and I was ready to go the ER but it finally subsided.   I mentioned this to my endo and now she wants me to be tested for celiac after 2 weeks of being on gluten foods. She has kind of flip flopped on how much gluten I should eat, telling me that if the symptoms are severe I can stop. I am eating 2-3 thin slices of bread per day (or english muffins) and wow- it does make me feel awful. But not as bad as when I ate that massive amnt of vital wheat gluten. so I will continue on if I have to... but what bothers me is - if it IS celiac, it seems stupid for lack of a better word, to intentionally cause more damage to my body... but I am also worried, on the other hand, that this is not a long enough challenge to make the blood work results valid.   can you give me any insight into this please?   thank you

The biopsy looks for damage to the mucosal lining of the small bowel from the inflammation caused by celiac disease when gluten is ingested. Once you remove gluten from the diet, inflammation subsides and the mucosal lining begins to heal.
