Hey Lisa . . . you premature posted . . . . I had already volunteered to help shuck . . . uh huh . . . see???? Getting a little "key happy" are we???? :lol::lol::lol:

So glad about little Megan . . . prayers that she will be able to come home soon . . . healthy.

Can do other things, but will save the additional volunteering to disperse in increments . . . don't want to give up all my secrets too soon . . . . ;)

Wow...alot of reading tonight.

Just stopping by to say hi to everyone in R-ville. Monday's always suck and I'm really tired from lack of sleep. Time to crash out now.

Susan...you lucked out...no science today. ;)

Be back tomorrow though. :)

Its getting cold here now...I think it might be right around Rachelville's temp....85 or something close to it. I *need* heat. I hope we can get back up to at least the 90's (and soon). Yesterday....working in the yard all day and I didnt even break a sweat! There was hardly any sun...it even sprinkled on me for a few minutes.

What happened?? I miss the heat wave. :(

Yes, I know that I'm in the minority here... Thats why I have my sauna in Rachelville. WHOOHOO...I love the sauna!!! :D

Megan is doing so well!!!! This is awesome. I'm getting more excited with each update. :)

Hi how is everybody doing?

Im still alive.

Thanks for your caring and concern, and advice that you wrote.

I have been working a lot and trying to figure things out.

I cant stand my job and im thinking about leaving the profession and changing carrer goals all together, from nursing to communications/consulting/psychology/?.

It seems like you guys are doing well on a low histamine diet? I havent considered that. Correct me if im wrong, would like to know if thats working. I know its prob not that simple.

I heard that people are safely eating nuts?! thats nuts! which ones

I was sent into a period of hell a few weeks ago which I think was due to peanut butter, advil, and concentrated fruit juice that I was drinking.

I had also had some vodka- absolute, and I think that was bothering me too.

Greygoose doesnt bother me, but the cheaper ones do.

Im still not sure why I was in so much pain, but the fruit juice didnt help at all.

Also the hospital salad bar and their food makes me sick all the time, and I was eating a lot of salad, with ranch dressing.

enough said. I feel better than I did then.

I started seeing a counselor to help me work through my pain and emotional issues, relationship, career, I saw her today and see her ever week for 6 more times.

Shes nice. but expensive 100$ a visit! which i pay in cash.

Im just reaching out and trying to make myself stronger, more finacially and emotionally independent and tanning and exercising and trying to look good, feel good.

The stress the relationship puts on me is unecessary, but I still care for him, we are just different personality types he is my opposite.

I took the myers-briggs personality test, through a book I got and it said that I am a ENFP,

extrovert, intuitive, feeling , percieving,

and I think he was a Introvert, sensing, thinking, Judging,

the exact opposite.. lol :)

I think I love psychology and helping people and consulting and jobs like that geared more towards being a catalyst for change in peoples lives.

Nursing is so constircting and routein and you get poop on all the time, like a slave, I cant stand that part anymore.

I bought several books including "Do what you are" which is based on the mysers-briggs personality test and its matches my personality pretty well. I still feel like I need to become a nurse so I can live and make money, but I dont want to go into the wrong direction either and try to be somthing Im not.

right now I cant stand the hospital im working at, theres a lot of drama, too little pay and too many patients for one person yet, I find it boring and tedious, if I have to take one more set of vitals im going to flip out!

any career advice you guys have would be great!

love you all, Christine

Thought that we need to educate all others that are not Southern Girls GRITS- Girls Raised in the South.

For instance:

When, I posted about "putting up corn" Susan was all over me "like white on rice".

A few hours later a strong thunder storm came through .. it "was raining like a cow pissing on a flat rock in a rain storm".

After, we werrrrrrrre sweating "like a ho in church".

And on and on and on.

Southerners aren't dummys, just a little sly ( actually, I was born in Bergen County, NJ). :P

My friend showed me how to crochet on a cruise last year...have I mentioned that I have 200 scarves in every color imaginable.

Donna, sounds like me with all my "scrunchies".

BTW.....who came up with the "Spinach Happens" bumper sticker??

I love that!! :lol::lol:

And just what would that job entail........

From Mitch:

The job would entail the proper dietary maintenance which results in a better quality of life. The individual essentially would be self appointed gluten free experts. This would be a life long hobby but for those who consider it a job, it would be moonlighting.

My mouth is watering ...

Lisa; I know what you are talking about, hubby and I just did that a week ago tomorrow. But you have a step I did not do, we just cut once so your corn will be MORE creamy than ours. My recipe called for butter but I use no fat. It sure is good...but we earn it. we got ours free from a farmer neighbor, do raise your own? We did last year & may again next year. Sooo goood!! We have a man cook on TV here/ cooking show who says it that way..cute :) later, evie

Lisa -- doesn't matter where you were born, it matters where you spent most of your LIFE. You're southern. I'll gar-on-tee it!!! Have said the "sweatin'" thing for as long as I can remember . . . "white on rice" . . . say it just bout every other day . . . cow . . yep . . . also say "chaps my a**" . . . don't know if you say that one . . .

Speaking of Grits (not the girls raised in the south-type) -- have you ever had Garlic cheese grits??? Best thing you've ever had . . . guaranteed. And I'm not the typical "grits with every meal" southerner!!!

So sad . . . we have an orchard that is actually in southern Indiana, but it has the best food in the world . . . Fried chicken, mashed potatoes, corn, green beans (cooked the right way) home-made potato rolls, all served family-style and for dessert: homemade pies --especially with whatever fruit is in season . . . I told Dave that I really MISS that place!!! Don't know how many Perkinje cells would be destroyed if I went there just ONCE . . . . I'm already in a wheelchair . . . I mean, a few more dead cells couldn't be THAT bad!!!!!

Well, going back to Bridalville . . . goodnight all in Rachelville . . . talk to you tomorrow!!!

RAchel - I think we all know when you're feeling better, NO SCIENCE POSTS! I'm a little concerned with all the ice cream you're eating ;) ....holy cow, you do not want to become intolerant.... what would you do??

Christine, good to see you again! Sounds like you're making some positive steps....I don't know where you live, but you might also want to look into affordable counseling...there are places (Catholic Charities is one) that work on a sliding fee scale, there's a great place here in town that uses interns from the UC San Francisco psychology program, I went to a gal there FOR FREE for a few months, and she was fantastic. Keep at it, girl, just let yourself get strong, it does take time.

what else....forgot everything.....reading again......

oh my gosh, I'm all by myself now....so sad....see y'all tomorrow!

:) Hi everyone. Wow, so much to catch up on.. Yeah, maybe Ryan should be John Boy-Vincent is more the ornery one-was that Jim Bob?

OMG-Corn shucking. We used this little square wood board thingy that had a nail in the middle that we put the end of the cob on and first cut the corn then scrape it to get the milky part out and yum indeed. I have to say, though when you are looking at six dozen ears of corn, you do feel a bit overwhelmed. It is a great feeling when you have it all put up, though. Good job, rinne. We always would freeze it. Freeze the corn, can the green beans, can the tomatoes-in the heat of August ugh. I now only grow herbs, flowers of all kinds and tomatoes. Love the farmer's market, though.

Christine, follow your heart-if you are working at what you love it will never feel like work. I am glad you have found a good therapist, although pricey

Susan--I know you want a Southern guy, I guess Aussie's are waaaaay Southern !! I want to see your jewelry too!!! I do the elastic -scrunchy type bracelets, too Donna!

evie-Cat woman! :P I have done the gamut of crafty things too. I am never bored, there is always something to decorate, paint, re-decorate, plants to care for, seeds to grow.....on and on.... I got one of those round loom things for a Christmas last year and made so many hats that no one I know will ever have cold ears that is for sure. I am still hoping and praying for a studio, though for my true love -clay. :)

(not clay aiken--the stuff you sculpt!!) I tell Zack--boring people get bored.

Smoking-wow, cecila-I am one of you as you know from our "smoking section" thread. I quit for a couple of days, go nuts, get sick as a dog with cramps and D, and pick them back up. I need to feel stronger and get a handle on this food thing. Tavi, I am so proud of you to be able to quit in the midst of this illness. You too, Rachel.

penguin--Take the class, you are SO not too fat!! I have seem major pork-queens belly dancing. It is about the sultry dance and the exercise-you will be wonderful. Charge it on his visa and catch the mail before he gets the bill-one of my girlfriends swears by this method.

Weight-I need to lose, and my sons both need to gain. It seems like they have just as many struggles with gaining as I do with losing. Miamia, you are lovely, my dear. My son has been hurt by rude remarks about his thinness and I just tell him-insecure, ignorant people feel the need to ridicule others to feel good about themselves. They are to be pitied. Regarding kale and spinach-I seem to be getting sick from both, and turnip greens too. There IS something to this histamine problem. I hope you can tolerate them, though since they are so healthy.

Cissie--I miss you!!! :D

Nikki-I 've been wondering-what do people think of Prince Charles and Camilla? I read an interesting article in last months' National Geographic about him and really was impressed with his farming practices in Wales. I actually gained a new respect for him and for his position.

Wonderful Dreams everyone- OOps, I mean Y'all :D

Karen -- don't know if you guys have this commercial up there yet or if you've seen it . . . these kids are AWESTRUCK . . . this GIGANTIC Oscar Meyer Weinermobile is backing out of the driveway!!!!!:lol::lol: The first time I saw it was right after the float idea . . . . and I laughed so hard I about peed my pants!!!!!:lol::lol:

Guest Robbin

Southern phrases--omg, I was getting ready for bed when it hit me that I have to ask if anyone has ever heard of this word--Gom -pronounced gahhhm. Used to describe a mess. As in, "You kids better not make a gommy mess in there!" I grew up with that word and was wondering if anyone else's family used that. One of my friends had an uncle who used it, but other than that, I haven't met anyone else who knows that crazy word. My husband thinks it is an Americanized version of some old English word that is obsolete. Anyone???!! Weird, I know. This has been a quest of mine for awhile :P lol.

Lynne, I saw that commercial too and thought immediately of the float!!! That isn't the weinermobile I remember!!

tiredofdoctors Enthusiast

Robbin -- it has gotten remarkably larger. Wonder if they knew about Rachelville and the altoids parade???

Haven't heard of the gommy mess, but my mother was the resident expert on cyclones . . . as in "your room looks like a cyclone hit it" . . . . living in Kentucky, I DON'T think she ever experienced one, but she sure knew what the aftermath looked like!!!!!

I think the British public have warmed (slightly) to Charles and Camilla.

I think it's because he really does have his sons best interest at heart, and has shown a more caring ,less stuffy side to himself.

Camilla?-Well she's never going to be loved by the public like Diana, but it's clear that Charles and her love each other, and according to the press Prince William and Prince Harry get on well with her.

Prince Charles is quite outspoken about organic farming and is very 'green' in all his ideas!

Good morning, y'all . . . Gettin' ready for another day in Brideville . . . . the wedding (I think) is going to be so nice . . . but, doing this on a limited budget --means that I am making SO MUCH of the stuff. Today's menu: Card Box (have to pad with quilt batting --have material that was on Ashley's Madrigal Costume -- it's gorgeous -- can't think of the word/type -- but it's white with silver thread design -- then embellish), Have to do the ribbons & porcelain roses on 36 tapers (just found out YESTERDAY that the hall provides taper holders . . . ) and the flower girl's basket . . . need to put the "finishing touches" on it . . . found a beautiful sheer ribbon with tiny pale pink roses and sage leaves (dimensional) on it . . will put that on the handle (same color pink as are going to be in Ash's bouquet -- along with white), then will put sheer sage bows on the sides, with porcelain roses (tiny) in the center. THEN . . . need to do the tapers for the cake table . . . and the Unity Candles. Tomorrow's agenda: Lighted tulle to place around the cake table and on the bridal party table, and 18 Pew bows . . . . then, I think I'm finished until Friday. Friday morning is pick up the cakes, cupcakes (we're having a lot of children there -- so we have a white 48 cupcake tree -- it's pretty cool. We're having the cupcakes iced with sage green icing, and a single white rose with a slightly darker sage leaf) and the flowers. Need to beat the flower stems and stick in buckets of water, then make the boutonnieres and possibly corsages that morning/afternoon and the bouquets that evening. If ANYONE in Rachelville can think of something that I have POSSIBLY missed, PLEASE PLEASE let me know. I am so afraid that I'm going to have forgotten something, and then am going to be in a spinach-load of trouble.

More southern sayings: They were all over (him)(her) like flies on spinach . . . Don't know if this one is southern, though . . . as nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs . . . . and don't listen to him, he doesn't (pronounced dudn't) know spinach from shin-ola. (Also, the older folks don't say "ho" --- they give it the good old long version!!!) Some of the older folks get the "swoles" -- swollen feet, etc. during the heat, and when the Good Old Southern Baptists faint during church because the spirit has taken them, "they done fell out" . . . . .

Have a good day, Rachelvillians . .. would you be mine, could you be mine, won't you be my neighbor???

Toodles,

Lynne

yeah but how do you do it for MORE than one post you want to reply too...I just get lucky sometimes and keep prematurely posting to different ones, but I type so quickly that they just keep adding to the one(s) I did (if no one's posted after me).

Been wondering how you were! Hang in there, it sounds like you are on the right track. I just started a lower histamine diet yesterday, so it's probably too soon for me to tell, but I can say that my legs didn't itch quite as much as they did the day before...could be coincidence or the placebo factor, but whatever, makes no difference, they didn't itch as much.

Ahhh, creamed corn! Love it; hate to make it. I don't mind the shuckin' or the slicin', but the scrapin' - Lord have mercy, what a mess! That corn milk flies all over the kitchen! And, yep, you must use bacon grease, not just butter.

How does this Southern meal sound: A cup of pot likker doctored up with pepper sauce and lemon juice; turnip greens cooked with the all-important salt pork (It gives the pot likker the right flavor.); creamed corn; hot cornbread dripping with butter; green beans, cooked for hours with more salt pork; Whippoorwill peas and okra; fried chicken; sliced home-grown tomatoes; sliced Kirby cucumbers and sliced red onion in vinegar; spring onions; and radishes. :):):) Have I left out anything? Oh, the Whippoorwill peas are tiny field peas that turn brown when cooked. They start "coming in" in August.

Here's a Southernism: "She don't know me from Adam's house cat."

For all cooks who like to read cookbooks, I have two suggestions. "White Trash Cooking," and "Sinking Spells, Hot Flashes, Fits and Cravings," both by Ernest Matthew Mickler, with pictures by the author. The pictures alone are worth the price of the books.

Lynne, the wedding will be lovely!!! Did you mention the Guest Book table? I probably just overlooked it.

Thank you all for your advice and the dermatitis herpetiformis article. The latter made me realise I had stopped taking my antihistamine, which I will restart today. The Dapsone has cleared the rash entirely but I still get quite a bit itching, absolutely nothing to see though. I know its notoriously hard to clear and its still relatively early days for me.  The iodine issue is very interesting. I do eat quite a bit of salt because I have Addison's disease and sodium retention is an issue. I also have autoimmune hypothyroidism, not sure how a low iodine diet would play into that? Because of my Addison's I am totally steroid dependent, I take steroids 4 x daily and cannot mount any defence against inflammation. I need to increase my meds for that. Now that I know what is wrong I can do just that if Im having a bad day. Life is very sweet, just so damn complicated sometimes! Hey ho, onwards. Thank you again for your advice.

So, essentially all of the nutrition in the food we eat is absorbed through the villous lining of the small bowel. This is the section of the intestinal track that is damaged by celiac disease. This villous lining is composed of billions of finger-like projections that create a huge amount of surface area for absorbing nutrients. For the celiac person, when gluten is consumed, it triggers an autoimmune reaction in this area which, of course, generates inflammation. The antibodies connected with this inflammation is what the celiac blood tests are designed to detect but this inflammation, over time, wears down the finger-like projections of the villous lining. Of course, when this proceeds for an extended period of time, greatly reduces the absorption efficiency of the villous lining and often results in many and various nutrient deficiency-related health issues. Classic examples would be osteoporosis and iron deficiency. But there are many more. Low D3 levels is a well-known celiac-caused nutritional deficiency. So is low B12. All the B vitamins in fact. Magnesium, zinc, etc.  Celiac disease can also cause liver inflammation. You mention elevated ALP levels. Elevated liver enzymes over a period of 13 years was what led to my celiac diagnosis. Within three months of going gluten free my liver enzymes normalized. I had elevated AST and ALT. The development of sensitivities to other food proteins is very common in the celiac population. Most common cross reactive foods are dairy and oats but eggs, soy and corn are also relatively common offenders. Lactose intolerance is also common in the celiac population because of damage to the SB lining.  Eggs when they are scrambled or fried give me a gut ache. But when I poach them, they do not. The steam and heat of poaching causes a hydrolysis process that alters the protein in the egg. They don't bother me in baked goods either so I assume the same process is at work. I bought a plastic poacher on Amazon to make poaching very easy. All this to say that many of the issues you describe could be caused by celiac disease.

thank you so much for your detailed and extremely helpful reply!! I can say with absolute certainty that the less gluten containing products I've eaten over the past several years, the better I've felt.   I wasn't avoiding gluten, I was avoiding refined grains (and most processed foods) as well as anything that made me feel bad when I ate it. It's the same reason I gave up dairy and eggs- they make me feel ill.  I do have a bit of a sugar addiction lol so a lot of times I wasn't sure if it was the refined grains that I was eating - or the sugar. So from time to time I might have a cookie or something but I've learned how to make wonderful cookies and golden brownies with BEANS!! and no refined sugar - I use date paste instead. Pizza made me so ill- but I thought it was probably the cheese. I gave up pizza and haven't missed it. the one time I tried a slice I felt so bad I knew I'd never touch it again. I stopped eating wheat pasta at least 3 yrs ago- just didn't feel well after eating it. I tried chick pea pasta and a few others and discovered I like the brown rice pasta. I still don't eat a lot of pasta but it's nice for a change when I want something easy. TBH over the years I've wondered sometimes if I might be gluten intolerant but really believed it was not possible for me to have celiac disease. NOW I need to know for sure- because I'm in the middle of a long process of trying to find out why I have a high parathyroid level (NOT the thyroid- but rather the 4 glands that control the calcium balance in your body) I have had a hard time getting my vit D level up, my serum calcium has run on the low side of normal for many years... and now I am losing calcium from my bones and excreting it in my urine (some sort of renal calcium leak) Also have a high ALP since 2014. And now rapidly worsening bone density.  I still do not have a firm diagnosis. Could be secondary HPT (but secondary to what? we need to know) It could be early primary HPT. I am spilling calcium in my urine but is that caused by the high parathyroid hormone or is it the reason my PTH is high>? there are multiple feedback loops for this condition.    so I will keep eating the bread and some wheat germ that does not seem to bother me too much (it hasn't got enough gluten to use just wheat germ)    but I'm curious- if you don't have a strong reaction to a product- like me and wheat germ- does that mean it's ok to eat or is it still causing harm even if you don't have any obvious symptoms? I guess what you are saying about silent celiac makes it likely that you can have no symptoms and still have the harm... but geez! you'd think they'd come up with a way to test for this that didn't require you to consume something that makes you sick! I worry about the complications I've been reading about- different kinds of cancers etc. also wondering- are there degrees of celiac disease?  is there any correlation between symptoms and the amnt of damage to your intestines? I also need a firm diagnosis because I have an identical twin sister ... so if I have celiac, she has it too- or at least the genetic make up for having it. I did have a VERY major stress to my body in 2014-2016 time frame .. lost 50lbs in a short period of time and had severe symptoms from acute protracted withdrawal off an SSRI drug (that I'd been given an unethically high dose of, by a dr who has since lost his license)  Going off the drug was a good thing and in many ways my health improved dramatically- just losing 50lbs was helpful but I also went  off almost a dozen different medications, totally changed my diet and have been doing pretty well except for the past 3-4 yrs when the symptoms related to the parathyroid issue cropped up. It is likely that I had low vit D for some time and that caused me a lot of symptoms. The endo now tells me that low vit D can be caused by celiac disease so I need to know for sure! thank you for all that great and useful information!!!

Welcome, @catnapt! The most recent guidelines are the daily consumption of a minimum of 10g of gluten (about the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread) for a minimum of two weeks. But if possible stretching that out even more would enhance the chances of getting valid test results. These guidelines are for those who have been eating gluten free for a significant amount of time. It's called the "gluten challenge".  Yes, you can develop celiac disease at any stage of life. There is a genetic component but also a stress trigger that is needed to activate the celiac genes. About 30-40% of the general population possesses the genetic potential to develop celiac disease but only about 1% of the general population actually develop celiac disease. For most with the potential, the triggering stress event doesn't happen. It can be many things but often it is a viral infection. Having said that, it is also the case that many, many people who eventually are diagnosed with celiac disease probably experienced the actual onset years before. Many celiacs are of the "silent" type, meaning that symptoms are largely missing or very minor and get overlooked until damage to the small bowel lining becomes advanced or they develop iron deficiency anemia or some other medical problem associated with celiac disease. Many, many are never diagnosed or are diagnosed later in life because they did not experience classic symptoms. And many physicians are only looking for classic symptoms. We now know that there are over 200 symptoms/medical problems associated with celiac disease but many docs are only looking for things like boating, gas, diarrhea. I certainly understand your concerns about not wanting to damage your body by taking on a gluten challenge. Your other option is to totally commit to gluten free eating and see if your symptoms improve. It can take two years or more for complete healing of the small bowel lining once going gluten free but usually people experience significant improvement well before then. If their is significant improvement in your symptoms when going seriously gluten free, then you likely have your answer. You would either have celiac disease or NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity).

after several years of issues with a para-gland issue, my endo has decided it's a good idea for me to be tested for celiac disease. I am 70 yrs old and stunned to learn that you can get celiac this late in life. I have just gradually stopped eating most foods that contain gluten over the past several years- they just make me feel ill- although I attributed it to other things like bread spiking blood sugar- or to the things I ate *with* the bread or crackers etc   I went to a party in Nov and ate a LOT of a vegan roast made with vital wheat gluten- as well as stuffing, rolls and pie crust... and OMG I was so sick! the pain, the bloating, the gas, the nausea... I didn't think it would ever end (but it did) and I was ready to go the ER but it finally subsided.   I mentioned this to my endo and now she wants me to be tested for celiac after 2 weeks of being on gluten foods. She has kind of flip flopped on how much gluten I should eat, telling me that if the symptoms are severe I can stop. I am eating 2-3 thin slices of bread per day (or english muffins) and wow- it does make me feel awful. But not as bad as when I ate that massive amnt of vital wheat gluten. so I will continue on if I have to... but what bothers me is - if it IS celiac, it seems stupid for lack of a better word, to intentionally cause more damage to my body... but I am also worried, on the other hand, that this is not a long enough challenge to make the blood work results valid.   can you give me any insight into this please?   thank you
