try not to stimulate your mind after 7pm or atleast 2 hours before sleep so what i meen is dont use a computer dont play video games and dont read, just watch tv or find something else to do. that may help also you say you are taking sleeping pills have you made sure that they dont use a gluten containign binder, lots of pills use wheat always check

but yes if i get glutened i toss and turn and stay in a state of half sleep half awake that gives me abosolutly no rest for the night

Try Kalms, or Valerian (its a herbal rmemedy made from a flower). Also as natural methos, you can try eating turkey, bananas or milk abotu an horu before bed - they all contain an amino acid called tryptophan which acts as a sedative, and is good to give ADHD kids. I find having a banana with some milk is good, as its not too heavy on your stomach before bed. Try taking a while realxing before you go to sleep, and going to bed at the same time every night to get into a routine. Hope that helps, I know how annoying it can be to have insomnia, and be constantly worrying about how many hours sleep you have left before you have to get up.

Hope it works out for you anyway, take care x :)

I was unknowingly cross contaminated for five months and I went to bed around three, woke up every ten minutes, and then finally at about 6am for good. I could never sleep having consumed gluten. Now that i am completely and safely gluten free, I sleep very restlessly, but fall asleep around midnight and wake up at 9am like clockwork.

Kaycee Collaborator

Yes I sleep so much better now that I am gluten free.

Before I used to be pretty restless, either no be able to sleep, or wake up on and off all night. I would blame the coffee, or the coke, or anything but the gluten, as I had no idea at the time it was the gluten.

Coffee did not help, and it can still keep me awake, but I limit the coffee, and never drink coke anymore.

I find now, that if I eat some gluten, it keeps me awake along with other symptons.

Ever tried trazodone? Before I got diagnosed I had horrible sleeping problems - couldn't fall asleep, felt like there was electric current running through me I was so restless and jumpy, and if I dozed off, I'd jerk awake again. Really puts a damper on life. My Dr. at the time prescribed trazodone, and it made all the difference in the world. Fell asleep and slept through the night.

Technically it's an anti-depressant, not a sleeping pill, but taken in low doses before bedtime it works wonders. I started taking 50 mg about 1/2 hour before bed, but now that I'm gluten free, 25 mg does the trick when I need it. It's not addictive, and doesn't leave me feeling hung over like so many sleep drugs. Plus, it is fine for long-term use. My father-in-law also takes it to address his own sleep problems and swears it changed his entire life.

I am still having a lot of problems sleeping. I would like to list all of my daily medications to see if it is possible that I am missing any hidden gluten. Sorry the list is so long but I have a lot of problems! Thank you in advance for all your help. You guys are great!

I just lay there until I fall asleep.

Try getting up and walking around for a few minutes. Aslo, I try to get a small snack, and then head back to bed.

I also like to read a good book. At least if I can not sleep I am doing something productive. This is a big problem for me as I am an Air Traffic Controller and need to getmy rest between shifts.

Judy, I recognize some of the meds and am wondering if you get info from the pharmacy? Our pharmacy gives out info on each drug. You may want to call them and ask. How long have you been gluten free? If it has been a short time it may take a little while to get the gluten out of your system. Also, make sure you are eating enough. Sometimes low blood sugars can cause insomnia. Try eating a carbohydrate food before bed. Hope you all get restful sleep soon. :)

When I'm glutened, it's a horrible experience trying to fall asleep. My thoughts go out of control and I start obsessing about just about every negative thing that's ever happened to me. My thoughts race out of control to the point where I feel like my brain is almost vibrating. Just trying to lay in bed with my eyes closed and waiting to fall asleep just makes things 100x worse.

But, if I can give my brain/thoughts something else to focus on, I can relax and fall asleep. So I turn on the tv in our room and turn it to the History Channel or Discovery, or something that I like, but kind of know about and can listen without being interested. The history channel is good for documentaries. Even a movie that you've seen a million times. I turn it on so I can hear it clearly. If it's too low, my brain just kind of hyperfocuses on it, trying to hear it. If it's loud enough, I can just zone out on it. For me it just gives my brain something to focus it's energy on, and I don't get the upsetting, uncontrollable thoughts.

That's what works for me.

what time of day do you take your meds? Sometimes if u take one at night..if its alright with the dr, try taking it in the morning. Maybe one is causing the sleeplessness. I know most antideppresants caused me to become jittery and feeling wired. Even when the side effects say drowsiness i get the opposite.

Ask the pharmacist about ALL the meds and possible sleeplessness.

sweet dreams!

Hi, I read in the celiac bible a book that has tons of info in it under medicines that lipitor has gluten in it. I was on it for only 3 days and luckily it made me sick so I stopped taking it. then I read it has gluten in it so that explains why I was getting sick and having terrible sleep too. Hope this helps.

Hi, Judy, I'm on two of your meds, and my husband is on two others of your meds!

The only thing that jumps out at me is that it's alot of meds for one person. When my husband and I started seriously exercising and getting outdoors for an hour a day, my sleep problems totally disappeared, my thyroid dosage went down, my bad cholesterol went down, I felt like I could actually handle things, and my husband's atenolol dosage went down. Any chance that could help you any?

BRUMI1968 Collaborator

I googled Lipitor and found this site, though I'm not sure who is behind it. I remember hearing quite a few bad things about lipitor...anyway, here's the site.

Open Original Shared Link

It does not mention gluten; however, it talks about other side effects.

Also, Zoloft ANd Atenolol can cause insominia/sleeplessness. (though it seems the Klonopin should make you sleepy).

Sorry, I had to keep going back and forth.

Also found that the Levoxyl can cause insominia. More worrisome is that Levoxyl probably shouldn't be taken with beta blockers or cholesterol lowering drugs, both of which are listed here.

So it looks like at least three of your meds can cause insomnia. I didn't initially find info on any of them contgaining gluten; but even if they don't, I'm sure your sleep is being disrupted.

Anyway...

Hi, I'm new here but it is a help to know I am not the only one. I have suffered for 25 years without knowing the problem. It was my husband who diagnosed me. I have been wheat free for a little over 2 years. He kept saying that my problems had to be linked to one illness. Sure enough...

Anyway, to sleep problems. I am also bipolar and my Dr. suggested I take 3 mgs of melotonin before bed.

Melotonin is produced in the pineal gland and as with anything, functions slow down with age. It gives you a nice heavy feeling and a wanting to go lie down. Since it is something your body should have I don't have any problems with my other meds. It takes a little while to build up in your system but it should help. You can buy it in any drug or grocery store and it is quite resonable in $.

Hi, What you need to do is to go back to the pharmacist with your meds, all of them and tell him to check with the companies for gluten. Anything that is over the counter should have a phone number or a web site. Many times a drug will be formulated with different binders, that's where the gluten is, depending on whether it is generic or not. The only real safe thing to do is ask the drugist, your doctor will be clueless on this.

BRUMI1968 Collaborator

Just to repeat - gluten or no, many of those meds cause insomnia.

JSmith Newbie

This is my first post on this site. DH has just been diagnosed. He hasn't even stopped eating gluten because he still has his biopsy this Friday.

He has never been able to sleep since he was a baby. He was also extremely hyperactive as a child. I'm sure if he was younger he would have been put on ridalin. Of course, he has always had stomach trouble but I somehow justified it all down to his whole system being hyperactive.

Right after we found out, I knew his stomach problems would get better but I started to wonder if this would help him sleep better and if his hyperactivity was also caused by the allergy. I am so encouraged by this forum. I see that going gluten-free hasn't helped everyone sleep, but it looks like it has helped many.

My husband also does not dream. We think he just never sleeps deeply enough because he never sleeps long enough. I am hoping dreams will come too (as an indication that he is getting a better sleep).

Thanks so much!

Now I'm off to the areas that tell me what to buy at the store for him. We go gluten free this Saturday!

I take lisinopril (Sandoz Labs)--it is definately gluten-free, as is the Prevacid. Prevacid seemed to interfere with my sleep, and I started waking up in the middle of the night unable to keep my balance--this stopped when I stopped taking it.

So I recently had allergy testing for IGE antibodies in response to foods. My test results came back positive to corn, white potatoes, egg whites. Tomatoes, almonds and peanuts to name a few.  I have had obvious reactions to a few of these - particularly tomatoes and corn- both GI issues. I don’t really understand all this allergy versus celiac stuff. If the food allergies are mild do I have to avoid these foods entirely? I don’t know what I will eat if I can’t  have corn based gluten free products

Geography makes a difference.  I'm in the West and Trader Joe's gluten-free bread tastes great and is a better price than most gluten-free breads sold elsewhere in my area.

We have four children (7-14 yo), and our 7 year old was diagnosed with NCGS (though all Celiac labs were positive, her scope at 4 years old was negative so docs in the US won't call it celiac). We have started her on a Gluten Free diet after 3 years of major digestive issues and ruling out just about everything under the sun. Our home and kitchen and myself are all gluten-free. But I have not asked my husband/her dad or her other siblings to go completely gluten-free with us. They are at home, but not out of the home. This has led to situations when we are eating out where she has to consistently see others eating things she can't have and she has begun to say "Well, I can't have <fill in the blank>...stupid gluten."  How have you supported your gluten-free kiddos in the mental health space of this journey, especially young ones like her. I know it's hard for me as an adult sometimes to miss out, so I can't imagine being 7 and dealing with it! Any tips or ideas to help with this?

By the time I was 5 I had my first auto0immune disorder, Migraine headaches, with auras to blind me, and vomiting, sensitivity to light and sound. I was 5 years old, and my stepfather would have pizza night, milling his own flour, making thick cheesy gluten pizza, that I would eat and the next day, I would have serious migraines, and my mother & stepfather did nothing about my medical problems. When I was 17 in my first year at college, I was diagnosed with my 2nd known auto-immune disorder, Meniere's disease. I was a elite athlete, a swimmer, and soccer player. And once again my parents didn't think anything of understanding why I had a disorder only older people get. Now after my mother passed from Alzheimer's disease she also suffered with living with gluten. She had a rash for 30 years that nobody could diagnose. She was itchy for 45 years total. My brother had a encapsulated virus explodes in his spleen and when this happened his entire intestines were covered with adhesions, scar tissue and he almost lost his life. He has 5 daughters, and when I finally was diagnosed after being pregnant and my body went into a cytokine storm, I lost my chance to have children, I ended up having Hashimoto's disease, Degenerative Disc disease, and my body started to shut down during my first trimester. I am 6ft tall and got down to 119lbs. My husband and I went to a special immunologist in Terrace, California. They took 17 vials of blood as we flew there for a day and returned home that evening. In 3 weeks, we had the answer, I have Celiac disease. Once this was known, only my father and husband made efforts to change their way of feeding me. At the family cabin, my stepfather & mother were more worried that I would ruin Thanksgiving Dinner. It wasn't until one of my cousins was diagnosed with Celiac disease. They finally looked into getting Gluten Free flour and taking measures to limit "gluten" in meals. He did nothing but ask for me to pay for my own food and wi-fi when I came to the cabin to stay after our house burned down. When he informed my mother, they proceeding to get into a physical fight and she ended up with a black eye. The is just more trauma for me. Sam had no interest in telling the truth about what he wanted. He lied to my mother that he had asked my husband if I could pay for "food" when he asked Geoffrey if I had money to pay for my wi-fi. My mother hates when he spends so much time on the computer so he lied and said I could pay for my own food. I will remind you I weighed 119lbs at this time. (At 6ft) that is a very sick looking person. Neither parent was worried about my weight, they just fought about how cheap my stepfather was. As my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2014. He had her sign over the will to a trust and added his children. He had no testimonial capacity at the time, so she signed without proper papers. Making this Trust null and void. When I gave my brother my childhood home, my mother stated I would be getting an equal part of inheritance to the house on Race. It currently worth 2.0 million $. I got nothing, and my stepfather has since disowned me b/c of my claim and he knows that my mother would never have left it uneven between my biological brother and myself. She sat me and my husband down, as we lived at the Race Street house and treated and took care of it as our own. My brother took over b/c he was going through a horrific divorce and needed a home so he could get a better custody deal with his soon to be ex-wife who was a Assist DA for Denver. She used the girls against him, and he & I were the primary caregivers. We, Judd and I spent the most time with them pre the divorce. Once Judd moved into the house, he threw all of my mother, grandmother and my family heirlooms out to the Goodwill. Nobody told my mother about this as she was going through cancer treatment and had Alzheimer's disease in her mother and her sister. My stepfather and biological brother took advantage of this matter, as I called a "family council" that my brother just never could make it to at the last moment. All of the furnishing, kitchen ware, everything was in the house my brother just moved into. He had had 2 weddings, I chose to elope b/c my stepfather ruined my brother's first wedding by talking about his relationship with my brother in front of my dad and his entire family, insulting him and having my grandfather leave the ceremony. It was a disaster. My stepfather just plays dumb and blames my father for the slight. I was the only child not to have a wedding. So, my mother and stepfather never had to pay for a thing. My mother had had an agreement with my father he'd pay for college and all medical issues with their kids, myself and Judd. So truly my mother never had to pay for anything big for me in her entire life. I am looking for anyone that has had a similar story, where they grew up in a household that had a baker that regularly milled flour and ate gluten. What happened to you? DId you suffer from different auto-immune diseases b/c of living with a baker using "gluten" Please let me know. I have been looking into legal ways to get my stepfather to give me what my mother had promised, and he erased. Thank you for listening to my story. Jane Donnelly

Possibly gluten withdrawal. Lot's of info on the internet about it. Somewhat controversial but apparently gluten plugs into the same neuro sensors as opiates do and some people get a similar type withdrawal as they do when quitting opiates. Another issue is that gluten-free facsimile flours are not fortified with vitamins and minerals as is wheat flour (in the U.S. at least) so when the switch is made to gluten-free facsimile foods, especially if a lot of processed gluten-free foods are being used as substitutes, vitamin and mineral deficiencies can result. There is also the possibility that she has picked up a virus or some but that is totally unrelated to going gluten-free.
