An Update On Me

Hey there.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Wanted to give an update about the cruise and how I'm feeling. The cruise went very well and I only

got sick one time for several hours. This was the morning after I'd had four pieces of bread with dinner

For the most part I ate a slice of bread or two with every dinner, but not much else in the way

of gluteny stuff. Lots of meats, potato's and salads.

Actually the worst day of all was after we got back...we had pizza for dinner. I felt like crap and hurt all over the next day. Like a hangover but without the booze....

Interestingly, what I've discovered is...it's not just the amount of gluten that I eat that makes me sick,

it's also, the RATIO of gluten to other foods. If I eat a couple slices of bread along with a large piece of meat, potato's....cheese etc...I'm not likely to get sick. However, if I hadn't eaten the other foods, I

would get sick. In other words a sandwich might make me sick, however a piece of bread, along with

a big dinner, doesn't seem to make a difference. How weird is that??

Why are you eating gluten? You can't get better if you eat it everyday. Damage is done despite a lack of symptoms as well

Good question. Because I've decided to pursue an official diagnoses. I posted about this a couple weeks ago...

Hope you had a wonderful time on the cruise. I heard that the trip is awesome. I know you want an official diagnosis and so keep on eating the bread. They say it has to be enough gluten to equal 3 slices of bread a day. Good Luck.

Hi Jerry--welcome back! Glad you had a nice vacation. Do you have an appt yet, or are you going to hold off a little longer--I can't remember

I think I'm going to try to consume gluten for a few more weeks then make an appt. I went a couple weeks gluten-free...so I just want to be sure to give it enough time. j

Sorry, I think I got you mixed up with another poster.

I hadn't been eating gluten free before having the antibody test done. I started eating gluten free after having the test done because the gastro PA told me to eat gluten-free for 6 months. I'm now 3 months in.

I tend to agree with RMJ. Your doc took the reasonable and practical approach to diagnosis. All things considered, it was the right way to go. However, if you have first degree relatives that show signs of possible celiac disease, urge them to get formally tested before they start the gluten free diet.

It sounds like you have a very reasonable GI doctor, who diagnosed you based on family history and symptoms after eating gluten. I would consider you lucky! The other option would be to make yourself very sick by doing weeks of a gluten challenge prior to an endoscopy.
