I took my last flagyl yesterday and was so happy because it is hideous stuff. The taste in my mouth, the nausea YUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Today I woke up feeling OK- nauseous, a little shaky. Ate some lunch (chicken, veggies and rice- nothing i haven't eaten all week) and 2 hours later I felt dizzy, headachey, nauseous and had explosive D. I am so bummed. I'm going to see the doctor tomorrow but I feel absolutely hideous. When is this going to get better. I took probiotics the entire time I was on the flagyl. :(:(:(:(

Could it just be the flagyl clearing my system out. I took phenergan for nausea while on flagyl and phenergan usually constipates me. Today, I only took about half of what I was taking Phenergan-wise over the ten days I was on the flagyl. Please tell me that my body is just releasing the C Ddiff and I'm going to feel better SOON. I was supposed to go away with my dad for three days tomorrow. :(

I have no words of advice or consolation, but I'm sorry you're sick, and I hope that you feel better very very soon! :)

Since the flagyl is so powerful, I would expect it to stay in your system a few days after taking it...

Thanks Chelsea- great picture of your new fur baby. :)

I don't have anything brilliant to say. I am so sorry you have all this. I took Flagyl when pregnant for my daughter and know it is a powerful drug. (And I only took it as a last resort.) Also, what I read about C-Diff tells of a formidable foe. At this point, would you consider acupuncture? I think your immune system could use the boost. Western medicine doesn't know why acupuncture works, but they are reluctantly acknowledging that it does. One of the "proven" effects of acu is that it boosts the immune system. It certainly can't hurt and most insurance will cover it if your primary says ok. I hope you turn the corner very soon!

(((((((hug))))))) I wish I had a remedy for you. I see this situation a lot on the WebMD boards and I know you are miserable. The one ray of hope I can give is that many say that effect is gone about 3 days after they finish the drug. I know it is needed but it is just so so nasty. You have been having it rough for a while and hope things ease up soon. You deserve a double hug (((((((hug))))))) I hope someone else can be of more help.

I'm sorry you're sick still/again!! Keep taking the probiotics because it can take a while for the bacteria to build back up in your system.

Thanks everyone- I feel like such an idiot but I think I might have gotten food poisoning :(

Our fridge hasn't been working great and the chicken I ate had been in there for several days.

Threw out all the meat/perishables and defrosted the whole thing before we get another huge heat wave again tomorrow. Hopefully this will pass quick.

It is hard to say that I hope it was food poisoning, because I wouldn't wish that on anyone, but I hope that was all it is. I had to take probiotics for a month after my antibiotics before my bathroom issues were back to normal. It is good that you took them during the antibiotics, but you really should keep it up for a few months. I drank a lot of kefir (the flavored kind tastes like yogurt) and I got better.

Hope you feel better, you have had a tough couple of weeks!

Yikes! Feeling better yet? Antibiotics typically stay in our system for a while after our last dose...so you could still be feeling side effects from the flagyl...

Thanks all- still had a huge round of D this a.m. I see the dr in an hour. Ugh! I feel like I have a virus. I just hope the C Diff is gone and this is either leftover Flagyl (I called it self-flagellation the whole time I was on it because it was so icky) or just some bad chicken (there are no bad chickens, only bad owners :P ).

At any rate, still don't feel good. But, this too shall pass I suppose.

Hope your doc gives some definite answers! Isn't that what we all want ?!

Insist that they do stool tests for the food poisoning. I had salmonnella for over two weeks prediagnosis and the doctor refused to check because she said 'it's hot and you have IBS' Had a real 'sheepish' doctor there when she finally tested and it came back positive. Don't let them pooh pooh (no pun intend) the idea make sure they test. Hope things get better soon.

Not to be a downer but C Diff is notorious for being difficult to get rid of. Could be the Flagyl, the chicken or C. Diff...I would get retested asap if the D persists. Sometimes Flagyl doesnt work...in that case the next step would be Vancomyacin. Hope its gone but if you *do* need the Vanco....at least it doesnt have all the nasty side effects that Flagyl does. Sorry you are still sick. :(

So sorry to hear that you're still feeling bad!

Guest BERNESES

Thanks all- they are retesting me for C Diff and bacteria, parasites, the whole shebang. she thinks it is probably food poisoning (it feels different than gluten and definitely different from the C diff- it feels like a virus- I'm achey, headachey, etc). Hopefully it's just that- right now I'm sittig home watching march of the Penguins and wishing I was in Antarctica cuz it's so darn hot.

Uh-oh now I'm scared to take my flagyl. I just started taking it last night because I was on vacation all last week and well, I wanted to enjoy my vacation. (Well, the prescription wasn't ready yet either.) I'm about to take my third pill as I am on my lunch break and am making sure I take it with food. I noticed the yucky taste in my mouth this morning but for some reason I didn't last night. Luckily I had a caramel frapacino (from starbucks...they are gluten-free right? i know i've read fraps w/chips are not gluten-free but i sometimes get lazy and assume things are gluten-free) that rid the bad taste. How long did you have to take the flagyl for? I forgot what mine said on the label. I go in to see the doctor next week sometime before I leave to go back to school. Ugh...I just want to not be sick anymore. That would be wonderful.

I took it for 10 days. Took the last pill Sunday a.m. and getting my taste back.

It affects different people differently. I don't do well with MOST medications anyway so don't fear the FLAGYL. I know jerseyangel had no problems with it.

Yes, Beverly is right--I didn't have any problems with it. I did have the metalic taste in my mouth, but none of the other side effects. I can't tell how old you are by your picture, but my doctor told me that drinking alcohol while on this will cause vomiting. Hope you feel better soon! :)

Guest BERNESES

Yeah- definitely DO NOT drink alcohol. I would even avoid vinegar. It has the same effect as antabuse- one sip can make you really sick. I was at a cook out this weekend and someone who had been drinking was talking to me and I couldn't even take the smell.

aggieceliac Newbie

7 months and 25 days until I can legally drink. It's going to be hard this weekend as it is my last weekend home before I go back to school and two of my friends are having parties and I'm on this medicine. I've taken a total of 3 pills now. I can't figure out if I feel nauseas or if I didn't eat enough food today. <_<

Guest BERNESES

More than likely you won't even want to drink as the smell of alcohol wasn't even remotely appealing to me. Good luck- let us know how you do.

I was nauseas the whole 2 weeks I was taking the pills...so its probably the pills. I hated being on them and I had to take it 3 x a day for 2 weeks. :(

The nausea stopped as soon as I got off them so it was definately a side effect of the meds.

Hello everyone. I am Elena and am 38 years old. I suspect I have a gluten intolerance even if my celiac panel is ok. I have the following symptoms : facial flushing, Red dots not bumps în face, bloating abdominal distension, hair loss, depression anxiety even with meds and even bipolar. Fatigue extreme to the point of not being able to work. All of these after I eat gluten. Could I have non celiac gluten sensitivity? Thanks anyone else with these symptoms?

Hi Everyone,  I do appreciate your replies to my original post.   Here is where I am now in this journey.  I am currently seeing a Naturopath.  One thing I did not post before is that I take Esomeprazole for GERD.  My Naturopath believes that the decrease in the gastric acid has allowed the yeast to grow.    She has put me on some digestive enzymes.  She also put me on Zinc, Selenium, B 12, as she felt that I was not absorbing my vitamins. I am about 5 weeks into this treatment, and I am feeling better. I did not have any trouble taking the Fluconazole.

Hi @JulieRe.  I just found your post.  It seems that I am also experiencing thrush, and my doctor believes that I have fungal overgrowth in my gut, which is most likely candida.  I'm seeing my GI doctor next week, so I'm hoping she can diagnose and confirm this and then give me an antifungal treatment.  In the meantime, I have been working with a functional medicine doctor, doing a candida cleanse and taking vitamins. It's already helping to make me feel better (with some ups and downs, of course), so I do think the yeast is definitely a problem for me on top of my celiac disease and I'm hoping my GI doctor can look into this a bit further.  So, how about you?  Did the candida come back, or is it still gone following your fluconazole treatment?  Also, was it awful to take fluconazole?  I understand that taking an antifungal can cause a reaction that sometimes makes people feel sick while they're taking it.  I hope you're doing better still !

I'm so sorry you're going through this—the "gluten challenge" is notoriously brutal, and it's awful to deliberately make yourself sick when you've already found the answer. For the joint pain, many people find that over-the-counter anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen can help take the edge off, and using heating pads or warm baths can provide some direct relief for the aches. For the digestive misery, stick to simple, easy-to-digest foods (like plain rice, bananas, and bone broth) and drink plenty of water and electrolytes to stay hydrated. It feels like the longest month ever, but you are doing the right thing to get a clear diagnosis, which can be crucial for your long-term health and getting the proper care. Hang in there; you can get through this! This article, and the comments below it, may be helpful:
