Ugh Displaced Mind

Lister, sounds like your girl is being real supportive with that salsa etc.

Thats great. I hope you appreciate her.

Carla I can associate with what you said exactly.

Lister with your da, family etc. Here is how I see it when I'm depressed. My immune system is trying to kill me, so its no suprise that my family are too, the whole goddam world is trying to kill me.

This is obvisiously not the case. Your da is probably clutching at straws here. He is probably trying to be sensitive in his own insensitive way.

Re Colonoscopy, is that like the aul biobsy? If so I can only describe it so. Its like taking a bite out of an apple, only your the apple. You feel it about as much as the apple does. However if you want you can creat eall sorts of psycosomatic suffering.

Life = what you make of it = what it makes of you!

Lis take a careful look at Turtles advice, those links could lead you to a more appropriate job where you wouldn't be cross contaminated. However you gotta decide what you got first cancer, chrons, celiac disease. I know where my money is at.

Finally Lis if you undertake a back to basics diet. Meat, fish, veg, rice, potatoes, and you are a coeliac then you will start feeling much better once you start. No more urg displaced mind.

Peace and goodluck.

are spicy things naturaly hard on the stomic?

Lister, this is your thread, at least read it.

You just give it easy to digest food and no irritants (or as few as you can)

Coffee, hot 'n' spicy ... alcohol (and nicotine) are irritants.

Anything with lots of water in it is usually easy to digest...

Zuccini, egg plant, cucumber (technically fruits) are all easy to digest...

Hard starchy foods are more work like corn, rice and perhaps potatoes...

A lot of people find a food combining diet easier on their stomach... (I do)

The theory is meats and protein rich foods like nuts need an acid environment to digest whereas vegetables need a less acid environment. It is suggested that by eating them together it kinds confuses the stomach...on how much acid to produce. While it can't digest everything it keeps making more acid = rumbling and stomach cramps etc.

A lot of people also debunk this.... personally I find it helps a lot.

You can get books or download from the internet lists of the different foods and you just try and eat them seperately...

10 yrs ago (having been biopsied for stomach cancer....ulcers and basically anything but celiac) I got put on a acid inhibitor which was then ranitidine and told it was for lfe.

A friend who's husband has Chrons recommended this diet. She did it herself and it has to be said she looked very healthy on it... she had convinced a few people to try it and they too all got healthier.

I was absolutely desperate so I tried it and it worked .....

The one I followed had gluten in it but I also found the book a bit "new world hippyish" but I was back in the UK for a short time and saw a TV audience show ... a bit like a watered down Oprah and the theme was diets.

They went through and blasted most of them... they had Dr.s in to blast them and then they came to this one and the Dr.s all blasted it.. no scientific evidence etc. ... then people who had done the diet all got up and started saying they didn't care... they were healthier than they had been ... they had lost/gained weight to a healthy weight etc. etc.

Non of the other diets had this sort of following... or convincing advocates... and one mentioned a different book that combined "food combining" with cycling "bad foods".

Bad foods were basically very starchy stuff like rice, corn and bread .(you were only meant to eat the same bad food once in 5 days maximum).. BUT he also advocated not eating wheat at all... if you could.

Well I got much much better... with little hickups every 5 days.(or so).. and when I cut out wheat as much as I could it suddenly struck me... its the freakin wheat. I had actually heard of celiac disease... but that was about it and I was certain I didn't have that... I was just a bit sensitive to wheat... however I cut out all non hidden gluten and did the diet ... and I really really improved.

To cut a long story short my mom started getting the same symptoms... to be honest she had always knocked my "wheat thing" ... and even been quite cruel accusing me of attention seeking (I once missed a flight because I was literally doubled over in pain and the pilot refused to fly me... (ironic I was flying back from Africa for a endoscopy!!) etc. etc. so after she had finally been referred to a physchiatrist for hypochondria and the Dr. had exhausted almost every last test known I managed to get her to suggest a IgA., IgG screening ....

Her Dr. laughed in her face (she didn't realise what the tests were for) and told her she was just mentally ill and nothing wrong with her except attention seeking and Munchausen... but he did run the tests.

He didn't actually apologise.... but when he did get the results he sent her for a biopsy and this was very postive....

Lister call the office and ask to be sure. It is most likely 6 pm but make sure you don't want to go through all the prep and start fasting at 9 and then find out they can't do the test cause you needed to start the fast 4.

yep 6 so i guess i will have a snack at 4 and eat some food at 2 and have a big lunch, trying to keep my stomic happy as long as possible to not make this harder on me then it has to be.. man im so freaked out about tomorrow i hate doctor offices and sedatives and all of this crap lol darn my luck sucks

the most freaky part about all of this is first the fact that something is literaly going to be traveling thru my organs, i meen if it was just the entrance i would not hvae such a big deal about it, but there going to have to like push thru it and into the intestine and then go thru me thats fricking messed up what if they slip up i meen sheesh its freaky stuff.. and then the sedatives i dont even know what type they are going to do, the slip they gave me says that during the procedure u will feel bloated and gas cramps from air expanding in you, so i guess im awake? either way sedatives freak me out i have herd way to many horror storys from people i know well i kept myself fairly calm until about this point but now i cant keep myself distracted from thinking about it since its like in less then 24 hours .... man

penguin Community Regular

Ha, if we all had good luck, none of us would be here!

It won't be so bad, it's less than 24 hours away, so at least it's short-term suffering.

Lister Rising Star

my dad just emailed me and told me things im allergic too, woops docs dont know i dont think it matters though, should beeing alergic to penacilin or nickel cause problems with any of the prep or procedure? not sure if i have to call and inform or not

queenofhearts Explorer

You should let them know just in case. They only asked me about eggs & latex, but you never know when they might need the info... better safe than sorry.

Lister Rising Star

yah they asked me about eggs also wtf was that about?

penguin Community Regular
yah they asked me about eggs also wtf was that about?

They use egg derivatives (I'm assuming the albumen) in the IV drugs for drug delivery.

Lister Rising Star

the drugs dont make you forget where you are do they? i hope they completely nock me out because if they dont im going to have a panic attack while on them, i get worked up really easy lately (probably cc problems) hell i cryed while watching a episode of rosanne i meen gah i may as well be on a menstration cycle with my emotions like they are

queenofhearts Explorer

Permanent pms! Yikes! Poor Lister!

You can request complete sedation. My husband had the twilight version, & was completely calm throughout, & I think it is probably enough to dampen any anxiety, but if just thinking about it makes you anxious, let them know you would prefer the full sedation. That 's what I had when I had both upper & colonoscopy, & I felt perfectly calm even after coming out of it. Going in is a little scary, but it's over before you know it either way.

Lister Rising Star

whats the least dangeruse of the choices of sedatives?? i dont want to be put into a coma by accedent but i also dont want to be freaked out the entire time.. the only time i have been sedated was when i was 3 because i had some unexplaid sezures so they gassed me and did some tests, and then i had shots to numb my mouth for my wisdom teeth but numb shots dont count as a sedative

:lol::lol: Have you ever thought of being a stand-up comedian? You can make an unpleasant life experience so funny!!!! Your money problems would be over, and you seem to have an abundance of material to draw from!

I didn't feel any effect from the medicine, I remember them giving it to me, then I remember talking to them when it was over, and I wasn't sure it was even done!

penguin Community Regular

They will probably give you versed, which is an amnesiatic drug, meaning you'll be technically awake, but you won't remember it. Seriously, you won't, that's the purpose of the drug. They'll probably also give you either demerol or fentanyl (both are very safe pain meds). You'll be very comfortable and won't care that someone is sticking a camera up your butt.

lor Newbie

i feel your pain! i just found out i have celiac and gastritis, which means more foods i love i can't eat! my stomach is always making noises and i was put on pri

Lister Rising Star

lol penquid u put it so simple up the butt hehe, up the butt im not worried about its the passage after the butt, i meen i have had lots of hands go up but never something going past the prostate.. (shutters at the fact that so many hands have gone up- serisuly i think some of the docs that do those tests get a little to friendly)

will my stomic hurt when i eat after the procedure? i want to gorge myself out at red robin with unlimited frys when this is all over(i love red robin the manager is so kind and the cook even comes out and talks to me to make sure things are to my likeing) but i was thinking that since they inflate the instestinal track it could be easy to irratete for a few days. Oh there going to ask me what meds im on and if im on any herbal medicans.. do i need to tell them about my little addiction? or should that not have a effect on anything, i told the lady for when i was getting my wisdom teeth taken out and they where glad i said something ( they gave me special instructions for after-care to prevent dry socket since i would have gaven it to myself very easy) but i dont like to be publicly open with the fact that i smoke with a doc unless i absolutly have too.

_______

as for beeing a comedian i would, if i could stand beeing infront of more then 3 people at a time.. i get very very tesnse when im in public areas, i cant enter schools because they make me panic with the ammount of bodies around (yeah im a freak) plus im funny but im too anoying to make a living out of it (wish i could do cartoon voices though, i love making voices) enough dreaming lol back to complaining, meh nm not worth it should try to keep in a good mood... think im going to eat some more while i still can

____

oh another part on prep, can i keep smoking cigs thru the night and into the morning to keep calm? or do they somehow go into the stomic??

CarlaB Enthusiast

I didn't have any problem eating afterward, but you're probably going to want to sleep the rest of the day. Don't plan on much, you'll be tired. A whole plate of fries might make anyone's stomach upset :P

I'd tell them about your little addiction if you've been doing it lately. You mentioned a while back that you had quit ... if you haven't started back up, I wouldn't bother telling them.

Lister Rising Star

yeah been smoking again for about a week, about 10 dollers worth a day, just trying to keep myself as calm as possible until the prep.. so i should tell them?

CarlaB Enthusiast

I used to be afraid to speak in public, but I made myself do it and now have spoken to groups as large as 50 or more people on a semi-regular basis ... and I'm the one who put off public speaking in college until the last semester of my last year (it's a first year class!) in case I changed my major to one that didn't require it!! I think most comedians are probably pretty annoying if they kept up their stage persona all the time!!

yeah been smoking again for about a week, about 10 dollers worth a day, just trying to keep myself as calm as possible until the prep.. so i should tell them?

I think you should.

can it wait tomorrow when the doc comes in a hour before the procedure to talk to me? or should i call the office right now?

I don't think it will affect much... except you maybe being more relaxed....but I'd just mention it in passing to the Dr. if you're concerned... don't make a big deal its not great on your records...

No coincidence. Recent revisions to gluten challenge guidelines call for the daily consumption of at least 10g of gluten (about the amount in 4-6 slices of wheat bread) for a minimum of 3 weeks. If possible, I would extend that two weeks to ensure valid testing.
    • SilkieFairy
Thank you both for the replies. I decided to bring back gluten so I can do the blood test. Today is Day #2 of the Challenge. Yesterday I had about 3 slices of whole wheat bread and I woke up with urgent diarrhea this morning. It was orange, sandy and had the distinctive smell that I did not have when I was briefly gluten free. I don't know if it's a coincidence, but the brain fog is back and I feel very tired.

@Jane02, I hear you about the kale and collard greens.  I don't do dairy and must eat green leafies, too, to get sufficient calcium.  I must be very careful because some calcium supplements are made from ground up crustacean shells.  When I was deficient in Vitamin D, I took high doses of Vitamin D to correct the deficiency quickly.  This is safe and nontoxic.  Vitamin D level should be above 70 nmol/L.  Lifeguards and indigenous Pacific Islanders typically have levels between 80-100 nmol/L.   Levels lower than this are based on amount needed to prevent disease like rickets and osteomalacia. We need more thiamine when we're physically ill, emotionally and mentally stressed, and if we exercise like an athlete or laborer.  We need more thiamine if we eat a diet high in simple carbohydrates.  For every 500 kcal of carbohydrates, we need 500-1000 mg more of thiamine to process the carbs into energy.  If there's insufficient thiamine the carbs get stored as fat.  Again, recommended levels set for thiamine are based on minimum amounts needed to prevent disease.  This is often not adequate for optimum health, nor sufficient for people with absorption problems such as Celiac disease.  Gluten free processed foods are not enriched with vitamins like their gluten containing counterparts.  Adding a B Complex and additional thiamine improves health for Celiacs.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Thiamine helps the mitochondria in cells to function.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins.  They are all water soluble and easily excreted if not needed. Thank you so much @knitty kitty for this insightful information! I would have never considered fractionated coconut oil to be a potential source of GI upset. I will consider all the info you shared. Very interesting about the Thiamine deficiency.  I've tracked daily averages of my intake in a nutrition software. The only nutrient I can't consistently meet from my diet is vitamin D. Calcium is a hit and miss as I rely on vegetables, dark leafy greens as a major source, for my calcium intake. I'm able to meet it when I either eat or juice a bundle of kale or collard greens daily haha. My thiamine intake is roughly 120% of my needs, although I do recognize that I may not be absorbing all of these nutrients consistently with intermittent unintentional exposures to gluten.  My vitamin A intake is roughly 900% (~6400 mcg/d) of my needs as I eat a lot of sweet potato, although since it's plant-derived vitamin A (beta-carotene) apparently it's not likely to cause toxicity.  Thanks again!
    • knitty kitty
Hello, @Jane02,  I take Naturewise D 3.  It contains olive oil.   Some Vitamin D supplements, like D Drops, are made with fractionated coconut oil which can cause digestive upsets.  Fractionated coconut oil is not the same as coconut oil used for cooking.  Fractionated coconut oil has been treated for longer shelf life, so it won't go bad in the jar, and thus may be irritating to the digestive system. I avoid supplements made with soy because many people with Celiac Disease also react to soy.  Mixed tocopherols, an ingredient in Thornes Vitamin D, may be sourced from soy oil.  Kirkland's has soy on its ingredient list. I avoid things that might contain or be exposed to crustaceans, like Metagenics says on its label.  I have a crustacean/shellfish/fish allergy.  I like Life Extension Bioactive Complete B Complex.  I take additional Thiamine B 1 in the form Benfotiamine which helps the intestines heal, Life Extension MegaBenfotiamine. Thiamine is needed to activate Vitamin D.   Low thiamine can make one feel like they are getting glutened after a meal containing lots of simple carbohydrates like white rice, or processed gluten free foods like cookies and pasta.   It's rare to have a single vitamin deficiency.  The water soluble B Complex vitamins should be supplemented together with additional Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine and Thiamine TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) to correct subclinical deficiencies that don't show up on blood tests.  These are subclinical deficiencies within organs and tissues.  Blood is a transportation system.  The body will deplete tissues and organs in order to keep a supply of thiamine in the bloodstream going to the brain and heart.   If you're low in Vitamin D, you may well be low in other fat soluble vitamins like Vitamin A and Vitamin K. Have you seen a dietician?
