If You Live Anywhere Near Long Island - gluten-free Bagels That Are Beyond Words

I know I mentioned these after attending the Suffolk County Celiac Vendor Fair, but I just bought my first package this past weekend and had one of the bagels from Joan's Gluten Free Great Bakes. OMG!!!! Words can not describe how awesome they are. You would seriously think you are eating a normal bagel. I mean I remembered the sample I tried being good, but this is just out of this world.

She doesn't ship (atleast not as of yet) so basically unless you will be on Long Island I don't know if there is a way to get them.

The bagels (as well as her English Muffins and other gluten free treats not made by her), are sold at Sweet Karma bakery in East Meadow.

I wish there was a bakery in Westchester that had them but I'm certainly willing to make the drive.

On a slightly ironic note, I can pretty much figure based on when i started feeling sick all the time that I developed celiac around my sophmore or junior year in college. This bakery happens to be about 5 minutes down the road from where I went to school. Just kinda thought that was funny.

I have family in both those towns and if close enough I'm sure they'll pick it up for me!

I've never heard of Aquebogue, and Jamesport is in Suffolk right? East Meadow is in Nassau County. I'd guess it's probably about an hour away. That's about how far I drive to get them and I would definately say it is more than worth it, but (this may be a stereotype, but I find it to be true) if something is more than 15 mintues away people on Long Island seem to act like it's in another country. My husband is from Long Island and this drives me nuts. When I went to school out there and told people I was from Westchester most people had never heard of it, and if they had they thought it was hours away when infact it's just over the bridge.

But hopefully your family will be really nice and willing to make the drive for you!!

Ok yeah, I definately know where Riverhead is. I'd say it's anywhere from about 45 mins. to an hour from there. I hope your uncle will go for you. These things are amazing!! I heard the english muffins are really good to. I've never been a huge english muffin person so I didn't want to buy them, but the people at the bakery were so nice and insisted I try it, so they gave me 1 to try rather than buying the whole package. I'll let you know how it is when I try it.

We had to move though, because we lived in a 1-bedroom brownstone apt. & the bedroom was already also my studio, & with 2 cribs & a changing table it was just insane! Westchester real estate is pretty pricey, so my husband requested a transfer. We live in NC now.

I was just thinking yesterday, "How sad that I'll never have another bagel" (because I never could call the frozen things bagels)-- now I have hope!

Thanks for the mentioning the bakery in East Meadow. I live in Wantagh one town away. I can't wait to try the bagels. Riverhead is 50 miles from East Meadow. You can take the LIE to the Seaford/ Oyster Bay (135) to Hempstead turnpike. Hempstead tpk (west) will bring you into East Meadow.

Jillian, Earth's Remedies is now closed. He had lots of food left including the rainbow cookies. I wonder what he did with them. I hope he didn't throw them out.

I see a ROAD TRIP in my future. I was just telling a friend that the best food on earth is a crisply toasted bagel w/ tons of cream cheese, piles of thin slices of LOX, a few rings of red onion and capers!! Man, do I miss that!!

Yeah real estate in Westchester is not exactly cheap. We love to watch these home shows that show what you can get in other parts of the country for the same dollar amount. It's crazy!! I mean for what we could buy a 1 bedroom apt. for in Westchester, you can have a 4 bedroom, gorgeous house elsewhere. Luckily I had a lot of savings (which are now totally gone - lol). But I love Westchester and working in the city, and really can't imagine living or working anywhere else.

Good directions

Yeah I'm so bummed about Earth Remedies. But actually I talked to him and he said I can probably still order the cookies through him; I'll just have to buy them in large quantities (maybe 15 or 20 boxes at a time). I figure they freeze forever so heck, why not. And my family has restaurants and we're starting a gluten free menu so maybe we could have them there. I would just have to find out if they are kosher and dairy free (which I think they are).

You've been to Cafe Baldo right? I only went there once and thought the food was ok, but I wanted to mention to you, their cookies are great. This past weekend I went to a jean party at my friends house in Lindenhurst and 2 of my girlfriends wanted to get me some treats (which was so sweet). One of them had been with me the time I went to Cafe Baldo so she knew about it. They went and got me chocolate chip and linzer tart cookies from there. YUMMY!!!! They're not the rainbow cookies, but definately great. If you haven't tried them you definately should.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Mama's!!!!! I wouldn't go back to Cafe Baldo to eat because I didn't think the food was that great; but the cookies my friends got me the other day were really good.

Massapequa is closer to them than East Meadow, but the bagels are only sold at the bakery in East Meadow.

Massapequa is only about 10 minutes closer. It's about 10 miles south east of East Meadow. This bakery is definitely worth the trip. The owner is extremely knowledgeable about celiac disease.
