Thanks Vincent!

I'll have to see what hubby thinks of that one.

Hmmm, rice or almond milk for the milk, but NOTHING is as yummy, rich, fatty or decadent as real whipped cream.

You have a point, and a very good one I might add.

Cashews are good though.

I've only been a lurker on this thread, but had to come share your pain about no eggnog at Christmas. I haven't had eggnog for 10 Christmases and for some reason was just talking about it yesterday and feeling sorry for myself. Do you think there's any way to make "fakenog" with almond milk, thickener and spices?

I don't think the Chai-nog mix has any egg in it. It's not listed as an ingredient. It's awesome, no need for cream. I bet rice milk would be fine in it.

No dairy or soy either?

Maybe the soy could be replaced with almond or rice milk. I can have eggs!

BTW Liz, welcome to the thread!! Please join in, we have a blast!!

It's not egg nog though, it's a chai latte. It does give you a bit of holiday flavor, but it's not eggnog.

So, Patti, almond milk does foam, not exactly the same as dairy, but it's still foam! Now, what was that thread called?

OK, I'm back! I had to put a pot roast in the oven, and take care of a few other things. So, I'm sitting here *with my hair up in a spring-clip*....

Great Carla--it's good to know the almond milk foams! The thread--it was started by mouse--can't remember the name.

Just add "milk"

...and yes, it is gluten free!

Or if you'd like to do it the hard way:

Enjoy!

That looks good--it would work with Vance's, Im sure. I do a similar thing with Stash's Chai Spice tea, sugar and Vance's. It's pretty good. I do miss the Chai Lattes at Starbucks :(

Hi Liz! :D

I think the almond milk may be too much right now for my tender tummy ... I feel nauseous ... not bad, but not as comfortable as I've been feeling lately. Back to meat and veggies :(

Yea, probably too soon :( It takes a lot of time on the whole foods to be able to sneak in a treat. You're able to use the Vance's, right?

Yea, Vance's is fine. So is almond butter. I didn't even think the almond milk would be a problem since both of those are fine! Plus, I eat lots of herbs and spices that you wouldn't think would be good for a tender tummy and do fine with those.

Guess I ought to wait for my coffee, too. :(

Hi Patti!

I wish I would have discovered this thread while I was housebound recovering from my surgery. It would have kept me entertained!

I found there was a lot of idle time with homeschooling .... I did lots of computer work (back then I was directing youth groups, I'm on somewhat of a leave of absence right now) during school hours. I couldn't do the phone work, but computer stuff fits in nicely.

Pot Roast sounds delicious Patti!(sorry any veggies).I'm assuming it's what we (Brits) would call a 'roast dinner'.

We have 'a roast' every Sunday with veg and roast potatoes.(I don't know if that's a Brit thing to always have that on Sun? )

My favourite is roast beef-yum! :P

BTW Patti,I'm sure your hair looks great up in a clip.Good advise from Carla!

I often put mine up in a clip when it's getting on my nerves/can't make it behave!!

It was good, Nikki :P

Sounds like we do our roasts the same way! I brown the meat with chopped onion then add potatoes and carrots and cook slowly in the oven for about 3 hours. Great leftovers, too ;)

My hair is just getting long enough in the back for a clip. I'd like to grow it back out, but have been tempted to have it cut and be done with it. Carla's my support person on this :D When I get weak and threaten to have it cut, she gives me a little "pep talk" Last night, my husband actually commented on the clip :o

Yea, but you almost snuck in there and got it cut without telling me!!! So, now I know, you really want to grow it out, but it's just at that hideous length that drives you crazy. I think I wore mine up every day at that length (and I'm not judging by your pic, just by your description).

Well, I'm going over to Indiana today to get my hair cut/colored -- at the salon where Morgan works, if you wonder why I still go over there!! I figured with Morgan in school there and since the lady over there who I've been going to for 6 years is so good with color, that I wouldn't change when we moved. So, Adam and I are going over there and spending the night in the guest room of my old sorority house (he always wanted to spend the night there .... I'd never let him  , finally, he gets to!!! ). They've also been trying to recruit Morgan .... she went over there yesterday to watch Grey's Anatomy with them. Anyway, I'll be gone till late tomorrow. Have a great day guys (that means y'all, Lynne)!

Bummer. :(

I hope you feel better :)

I hope it wasn't due to all this talk of egg nog and ice cream (on OMG).

I'm finally feeling better from my weekend CC. My wife is sick with THE CRUD. (Cough, fever, goobery nose, etc.) She had an awful night last night. Hacking, snoring, snorting it got so bad I had to move to the couch at 2 AM. I asked her how she felt this morning, and she said she had one of her best night's sleep for the week. She was serious! I mumbled something like, "must be nice" She seems better this morning, so hopefully I can get some sleep tonight. I haven't been sleeping well all week, so i'm dragging, and she's been dragging right behind me. I'm sure it won't be long before I succumb to the crud as well. Boo-hoo :(

I am looking forward to Monday. (I bet that has never been said before) I pick up my gluten-free order and I might take the day off. Our main database is down and to be upgraded, so I'm not doing anything at work anyway. (Hence my frequent postings here) I'll get to spend a daddy-daughter day with Madeline (my 2 1/2 y.o.) We always (like 3x a year!) go to McD's to play on the indoor playground (and get a happy meal). Has anyone evr had to rescue a child from the upper reaches of one of those tube thingys? Now that is entertaining! :P

CarlaB Enthusiast

Yes, we've all been in those tube thingies. You feel like you need a shower afterwards ... all those kids in there, has to be dirtier than a shopping cart handle!!

Have fun on Monday! Glad you're feeling better.

I think the almond milk, or maybe the tea, it was a different brand. Strange, except for gluten and dairy, my stomach's never been easily upset, that was a totally new thing. I'll see how it goes Sunday, I may still have my coffee.

Yuck! I think it should be a requirement for a kid to spend sometime in one of those places. They get exposed to all those germs, it makes Kindergarten less of a shock to their systems! But oooohhhhh how dirty the socks get! The big up-side is that she will be so worn out after playing that she (we) will take a nice nap later in the day. So it's setting up to be a big day, Donuts (No BEER ;) ), McD's, Playground, nice long nap, maybe play in the leaves. I can't wait for Monday!

Welcome to the forum, @Judy M! Yes, he definitely needs to continue eating gluten until the day of the endoscopy. Not sure why the GI doc advised otherwise but it was a bum steer.  Celiac disease has a genetic component but also an "epigenetic" component. Let me explain. There are two main genes that have been identified as providing the "potential" to develop "active" celiac disease. We know them as HLA-DQ 2.5 (aka, HLA-DQ 2) and HLA-DQ8. Without one or both of these genes it is highly unlikely that a person will develop celiac disease at some point in their life. About 40% of the general population carry one or both of these two genes but only about 1% of the population develops active celiac disease. Thus, possessing the genetic potential for celiac disease is far less than deterministic. Most who have the potential never develop the disease. In order for the potential to develop celiac disease to turn into active celiac disease, some triggering stress event or events must "turn on" the latent genes. This triggering stress event can be a viral infection, some other medical event, or even prolonged psychological/emotional trauma. This part of the equation is difficult to quantify but this is the epigenetic dimension of the disease. Epigenetics has to do with the influence that environmental factors and things not coded into the DNA itself have to do in "turning on" susceptible genes. And this is why celiac disease can develop at any stage of life. Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition (not a food allergy) that causes inflammation in the lining of the small bowel. The ingestion of gluten causes the body to attack the cells of this lining which, over time, damages and destroys them, impairing the body's ability to absorb nutrients since this is the part of the intestinal track responsible for nutrient absorption and also causing numerous other food sensitivities such as dairy/lactose intolerance. There is another gluten-related disorder known as NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity or just, "gluten sensitivity") that is not autoimmune in nature and which does not damage the small bowel lining. However, NCGS shares many of the same symptoms with celiac disease such as gas, bloating, and diarrhea. It is also much more common than celiac disease. There is no test for NCGS so, because they share common symptoms, celiac disease must first be ruled out through formal testing for celiac disease. This is where your husband is right now. It should also be said that some experts believe NCGS can transition into celiac disease. I hope this helps.

My husband has had lactose intolerance for his entire life (he's 68 yo).  So, he's used to gastro issues. But for the past year he's been experiencing bouts of diarrhea that last for hours.  He finally went to his gastroenterologist ... several blood tests ruled out other maladies, but his celiac results are suspect.  He is scheduled for an endoscopy and colonoscopy in 2 weeks.  He was told to eat "gluten free" until the tests!!!  I, and he know nothing about this "diet" much less how to navigate his in daily life!! The more I read, the more my head is spinning.  So I guess I have 2 questions.  First, I read on this website that prior to testing, eat gluten so as not to compromise the testing!  Is that true? His primary care doctor told him to eat gluten free prior to testing!  I'm so confused.  Second, I read that celiac disease is genetic or caused by other ways such as surgery.  No family history but Gall bladder removal 7 years ago, maybe?  But how in God's name does something like this crop up and now is so awful he can't go a day without worrying.  He still works in Manhattan and considers himself lucky if he gets there without incident!  Advice from those who know would be appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!

You've done an excellent job of meticulously tracking the rash's unpredictable behavior, from its symmetrical spread and stubborn scabbing to the potential triggers you've identified, like the asthma medication and dietary changes. It's particularly telling that the rash seems to flare with wheat consumption, even though your initial blood test was negative—as you've noted, being off wheat before a test can sometimes lead to a false negative, and your description of the other symptoms—joint pain, brain fog, stomach issues—is very compelling. The symmetry of the rash is a crucial detail that often points toward an internal cause, such as an autoimmune response or a systemic reaction, rather than just an external irritant like a plant or mites. I hope your doctor tomorrow takes the time to listen carefully to all of this evidence you've gathered and works with you to find some real answers and effective relief. Don't be discouraged if the rash fluctuates; your detailed history is the most valuable tool you have for getting an accurate diagnosis.

In this case the beer is excellent, but for those who are super sensitive it is likely better to go the full gluten-free beer route. Lakefront Brewery (another sponsor!) has good gluten-free beer made without any gluten ingredients.

Welcome to the forum, @catsrlife! Celiac disease can be diagnosed without committing to a full-blown "gluten challenge" if you get a skin biopsy done during an active outbreak of dermatitis herpetiformis, assuming that is what is causing the rash. There is no other known cause for dermatitis herpetiformis so it is definitive for celiac disease. You would need to find a dermatologist who is familiar with doing the biopsy correctly, however. The samples need to be taken next to the pustules, not on them . . . a mistake many dermatologists make when biopsying for dermatitis herpetiformis.
