Annnnnnnnnnd BACK to ABSINTHE!!

I don't remember last time if anyone said it was legal again in the U.S..

A local distillery is making it now so naturally I'm contemplating getting a bottle and of course the requisite paints and canvases

P.S. Saw a great sentence in yesterday's Dilbert hehehehe

"I'm drowning & monkeys dressed as lifeguards are throwing me anvils"

Yes, I will admit that I did once train a minnow . . .

GAHHH!!!! What does it mean when you are doing something totally unrelated to this board and it pops into your head how you should have worded a post!!??!!

This is what I meant to say:

I admit that I did once school a minnow!!!

Here's another serious question . . . are your symptoms for consuming dairy the same as gluten? how 'bout trace amounts?

Morning Sillies!

I am so tired today and yes another dreary days ahead, one of those I can sleep forever days. Hubby is home sick. He went home early from work yesterday and now he didn't come in at all today. Says his stomach is bothering him.

I have read quite a bit about lactose intolerance (not casein), and what I have learned is that yes, the symptoms are similar: gas, bloating, pain.....

You know what I think winter is never going to come this year....

trace amounts of dairy - that did not affect me when I was dairy-intolerant, the first few months.....is this about your daughter? How is she doing?

What in hell am I doing up at 5 a.m., talking to you people?

I think you have to drink the absinthe to "see" the phaeries.

Yes, this is about my trouble-maker . . . I'm doing everything I can to keep the dairy. I've got her on probiotics and I'm treating her as if she is lactose intolerant. No MSG. Really trying to cut the artificial dyes. Took her off of erythromycin (which I never thought she needed). She's on prevacid for acid reflux and it continues to "break through". I will be confessing to the GI today as we have an appointment. Cutting all dairy is my next step . . . praying that we get to add it back later is the step after that.

Amanda, waiting for winter, did you say? Well then what was all this talk of heinous roads, driving on ice, snow......all of that. Was that imaginary? Were you lying to us?

Janet - the GI today - - oh I hope he has some brilliant idea for you....... I'm sorry your girl's still struggling......and yes, we MUST pray that dairy can re-enter her life!!!! It does happen. :)

I'm so sleep I don't even know what in hell I'm writing or saying.

Here's another serious question . . . are your symptoms for consuming dairy the same as gluten? how 'bout trace amounts?

Mine are different. It affects my head mostly, I get very congested, sinus infections, head spacyness, and vertigo. I get some "gluten" symptoms too which are usually gastrointestinal, but not as much and not as severe. Trace amounts aren't bad as long as I don't do the trace amounts every day. I think that's why I can do small amounts of sheeps milk once a week. The two times I have knowingly had gluten, I got bad stabbing pains in my abdomin...didn't get that with dairy.

I mean, if it doesn't come naturally is it worth it??

Hmmm, how long has she been gluten-free Janet??

Hubby also (as Susie) had the 'temporary' lactose (NOT Casein) intolerance about 6 months into going gluten-free.

He could tolerate butter and hard cheese so we knew it wasn't a casein thing.

(BTW - I believe sheeps milk products have less casein - feta cheese etc)

The slightest amount gave him worse symptoms than a 'glutening' (he is annoyingly mostly asymptomatic with gluten - it takes a build up for that to effect him)

Symptoms were really bad stomach pains and crashing headaches <_<

Hope you work out what's wrong :)

Did Susie go back to bed??? 5AM!!!!!!! (unheard of :o )

Mad giver of fish kissing catergories that she is

EDIT!!!!!! Don't want to panic myself but I'm fast approaching 2000 posts..........should I get the mac & wellies out???

I am a winter fan for skiing and watching it through the window...I do not driving on it. Snow is not too bad, ice forget about that....that is a death wish!

This warm weather for two days and then cold again is doing nothing but making us all sick...

Yeah--it seems like an odd winter, although this is my first one in PA.

I have a short sleeve shirt on today :)

I was hoping to wear a skirt tomorrow but I hear it is going to rain and that wont be any fun.

I am hoping to hit the slopes with Tammy this weekend! Another Saturday night run. Hopefully the weather doesnt take away all the snow...

Good luck today with the specialist, Janet. DS Jack told me shortly after he started gluten-free eating that it really wasn't a difficult way to eat. We were discussing other food intolerances and allergies, and his eyes suddenly widened in alarm as he said, "Oh! No WAY could I stop eating milky and creamy things!" Kids and milk....

But so many people can reintroduce it, so fingers crossed if that is the route you need to go! :)

I'm so sleep I don't even know what in hell I'm writing or saying.

Susie, I get exactly the same way when I'm sleepy. And hungry. And wistful. And angry. And attentive. And excited.......gahhhhhh....

Okay.....today - - - my prescription - - - snuggle up w/ John and Lucky - - have some fun drinks - cosmos? Or how about champagne mixed w/ pomegranite juice? Have the cocktails and eat some yummy snacks and look at the GORGEOUS Tom Brady and.......try and pretend that no wretchedness exists in your life........and remember that all of this, too, shall pass.

WHY WHY WHY- why do my doctors not prescribe this? actually, I'd RATHER snuggle with Brett Favre! He's a handsome fella! Tom didn't work out so well on Sunday!

Actually, while we're on the subject of dairy intolerances, I have a question to add to Janet's: Why is sensitivity/intolerance to gluten potentially life-threatening if not treated (cancers, malabsorption diseases, neurological affects), but lactose intolerance is not? I keep hearing how if one can toleratre the symptoms of LA, it's fine to consume dairy. They both involve an autoimmune response, correct? Bad antibodies floating about?

Hmmmmm.....very un-Silly of me. Should've started a new thread.....

That is very interesting--you should start a thread on it. :)

If an argument breaks out, I had nothing to do with it

Actually, I think that LI doesn't involve an immune response--it's an enzyme that's lacking to digest the dairy properly.

Hi Bev!!!! :D

Hmmm, how long has she been gluten-free Janet??

She's been gluten free for 10 months. Her blood test at the 6 month mark was excellent, couldn't ask for better. She was still having breakthrough acid reflux at that time so I didn't think it was cc. I started a thread (and got no answer to the question) asking if you were being cc'd (say on an every two-week basis) would it show up in a tTG reading.

Actually, while we're on the subject of dairy intolerances, I have a question to add to Janet's: Why is sensitivity/intolerance to gluten potentially life-threatening if not treated (cancers, malabsorption diseases, neurological affects), but lactose intolerance is not? But is lactose intolerance an autoimmune thing . . . I didn't think so . . . I thought you were missing an enzyme and the result of which causes a stomach ache/GI distress but doesn't particularly due damage . . . I may be totally wrong, that's just what I thought. And as far as a dairy intolerance . . . I think that's a different ballgame . . . Hmmmm, if only someone was going to be visiting a GI soon and could ask some of these questions.

Hmmmmm.....very un-Silly of me. Should've started a new thread.....

Oh Yes, I know I started it . . . hope no one "reports" us for being serious on the silly thread.

Actually I'd like to point out that chronic inflammation anywhere is associated with an incresed risk of cancer. So if you eat dairy and it gives you intestinal troubles, you might want to assume that there is some associated inflammation with it.

There are two gluten-related disorders that share many of the same symptoms but differ in nature from each other. One is known as celiac disease or "gluten intolerance". By nature, it is an autoimmune disorder, meaning the ingestion of gluten triggers the body to attack it's own tissues, specifically the lining of the small bowel. This attack causes inflammation and produces antibodies that can be detected in the blood by specific tests like the TTG-IGA test you had. Over time, if gluten is not withheld, this inflammation can cause severe damage to the lining of the small bowel and even result in nutrient deficiency related health issues since the small bowel lining is organ where all the nutrition found in our food is absorbed.  The other is NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity or just "gluten sensitivity") which we know less about and are unsure of the exact mechanism of action. It is not an autoimmune disorder and unlike celiac disease it does not damage the lining of the small bowel, though, like celiac disease, it can cause GI distress and it can also do other kinds of damage to the body. It is thought to be more common than celiac disease. Currently, we cannot test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out to arrive at a diagnosis of NCGS. Both disorders require elimination of gluten from the diet.  Either of these disorders can find their onset at any stage of life. We know that celiac disease has a genetic component but the genes are inactive until wakened by some stress event. About 40% of the general population has the genetic potential to develop celiac disease but only about 1% develop active celiac disease. The incidence of NCGS is thought to be considerably higher. I hope this helps.

I have always eaten gluten and never stopped until my recent episode. I started more wheat products as my Dr. requested for the Tissue Transglutaminase Iga Antibody. mye result Value <1.0 Value interpretation: <15.0 Antibody not detected > or =15.0 Antibody detected I do not understand any of it. After eating all that wheat product my body exploded with all sorts of symptoms. I stop gluten ASAP. I am still in the healing process. I started having issues after my surgery.

Welcome to the celic.com community @Ello! You say you had a blood test for celiac disease after eating gluten for 2 weeks. Were you gluten free before that? Had you ever been officially diagnosed with celiac disease previously? You say the result of the blood test was 1.5. Can you provide the name of the test and the reference range for negative vs. positive for the test? I ask because different labs used different reference ranges so scores without a reference range aren't very helpful.

Surgery was in April 2023 due adhesions wrapped around my small bowel which caused blockage and had to be removed. Adhesions were so badly entangled that Surgeon could not cut out them, so the resection was performed. July 2025 started having severe yellow diarrhea and sometimes constipation. Just had another episode and was tested for celiac. Blood test stated 1.5 after eating gluten for 2 weeks. Lipase level was 120. Having an CT scan to check the pancreas. I have never had any issues eating gluten and now I am so fearful that I might have celiac. Has anyone had a small bowel resection? I am 65 years old. UGGH! I am still feeling bloating etc.
    • Scott Adams
If your tTg-IgA was 28 and positive is at 3, you are nearly 10x over the positive marker, so the most likely explanation by far would be celiac disease. I also do not understand why your doctor would not want to run the blood test, which is the normal first step in the diagnosis process.
